Roy Halladay - Offseason?

End - I think that makes more sense and would be preferred to getting 1-2 years of Halladay. Give me two guys with the liklihood of being a 2 and a 3 (like stated with Cappy and De La Rose which obviously did not work out) and I'll take another Sexson type trade any day of the week and twice on Tuesdays.

The whispers just won't go away. Halladay is apparently unhappy in Toronto and has let management know it, and management has apparently responded by doing some quiet surveying of teams (such as St. Louis and the Dodgers) that are far, far away from the AL East in an effort to see what it could get for the 2003 Cy Young Award winner. Apparently, the returns other teams are getting for top-talent pitchers such as C.C. Sabathia, Rich Harden and Erik Bedard has inspired the Blue Jays to at least find out what it could get for one of the best pitchers in the American League. It remains unlikely that they'd deal him, but you never know.

Newark Star-Ledger

I can't believe he might be available. I would assume at least one of Escobar or Gamel plus Jeffress or Braddock. I would certainly like to see the Brewer's get involved if he is being shopped.

As much as I like Escobar if we could get Halladay this year for him (plus others) that'd be crazy. Having Sabathia, Sheets, and Halladay in the same rotation would be amazing. That'd really hide our crappy bullpen too as all go very deep into games. 13 complete games between the three of them. Of course there's no chance of that happening, but wow.

Why wait until the offseason. If the Brewers are "going for it", and the price for some of these relievers are too high, why not trade for another ace. I would offer: Weeks, Salome, and a starter of their choice (Bush, McClung, or Soup) Take two if you'd like. Durham would be an everyday for the remainder of the season. We have catching depth in our system, and Lucroy is better defensively, so Salome would be my choice for trade bait.

That would definately not be enough for Halladay. I think more along the lines of Gamel or Escobar, Salome or Jeffress and one lower level prospect would do it. I would also do that in a heartbeat.

Yeah, I'm a big supporter of the "screw the future this is the year" mentality. We may never have a better shot at the World Series than we do this year, and certainly not within the next few years. What we have is a very good start, but with Halladay we'd become the favorites to win. Not only that but hw's locked up through 2010. If we're losing Sheets and Sabathia in the offseason that would do a lot to ease the pain. If we could get him without giving up Gamel, Jeffress, or anything on our major league roster (exception being if they want Suppan, McClung, Bush, or maybe Weeks) then go for it. I'd like to keep Escobar as well, but if he's what it'd take to get Halladay then so be it. Can you imagine going into a 7 game series with this rotation:

Game 1: CC Sabathia

Game 2: Ben Sheets

Game 3: Roy Halladay

Game 4: Manny Parra

Game 5: CC Sabathia

Game 6: Ben Sheets

Game 7: Roy Halladay

Let's get it done right now Dougie! Time to go for it!

Escobar, Salome, and a pitching prospect (not named Jeffress) for Halladay.

This deal makes sense for both teams, especially as it is looking more and more like the Blue Jays are shopping Halladay as he apparently wants out. The Blue Jays get a potential star SS of the future, and a solid hitting prospect whom if he can't hack it defensively at C, he can at least DH. The Brewers would be unstoppable the rest of the way with three ace quality pitchers. They also wouldn't be mortgaging their future. Halladay is signed through 2010, and Halladay, Gallardo, and Parra is still a very solid top of the rotation for the next two years. They sign Hardy to a long-term deal, and they still have Lucroy and Lawrie as C's of the future. On top of that they would have five first rounders next year with the departures of Sabathia and Sheets. It would be nice to keep Sheets if they could, but I think Sabathia will be far out of the Brewers' price range. Also what better advertisement to future FA's that the Brewers are a legit organization and are willing to make the necessary moves to be a consistent contender year in and year out.

I will probably lay awake at night until the trade deadline passes thinking about how amazing such a development would be. Too good to be true right? Although, I think the Brewers have the ammunition to make it happen if they wanted to. Doug Melvin would go down as a legend if he got this done.
