Final: Arizona Padres 7, Arizona Brewers 6

Lose on a walk-off triple with no outs...

Arizona Box Score

Shawn Zarraga with his first of what should be many pro home runs; big game for Miguel Vasquez, normally a middle infielder, playing left field -- on base three times and throws out two runners on direct throws to home plate; none of the three pitchers that followed Jake Odorizzi could match his success, and that's what drops the boys to 3-14; why we love baseball -- ten errors last game, none today; only 83 degrees at gametime, wow...

Five stolen bases off Frederickson / Fryer in the first three innings of West Virginia tilt against the Charleston RiverDogs.

And they each committed an error, plus Frederickson added three wild pitches, just for kicks.

wow, Frederickson with the wildness and the 5 allowed stolen bases, yet with a different pitcher on the mound Fryer was 2 for 2 in gunning down runners.

Odorizzi will probably get stretched out to 5 innings, but then will hit Helena. What's interesting is that we've already had 2 pitchers from the '08 draft reach A ball (Frederickson, Bowman...any others?). We could wind up with 2-3 more there, too.

Not to get lost in the other nice outings by the likes of Odorizzi and Cody, Lucas Luetge with a nice line tonight 5 IP, 3K, 1H, 0BB. He is an intriguing prospect being a lefty pitcher. He is a later round pick that could make people take notice.

Frederickson.. Yikes... and a LH pitcher to boot... limit that running game son! I hope they can work some magic with him over the winter. Fryer did nab the first runner tying to steal against Bowman, speaking of Bowman, his outing wasn't as bad as it seemed. He did give up double, single, double but Cline may have cost 2 runs with his fielding error as it could have been a double play play opportuinty, tough to tell from the game log. Ramlow gives up 2 runs late to tie the game... not a good night for pitching in WV, and a tough loss in extras.

Edit. Anyone have any idea when Lasker is going to debut? Battlekow?

I was really hoping that they would keep Frederickson at Helena for the whole year to build his confidence. I don't think it will do him any good to bounce around; let him stay at one place with one coach and get consistent coaching. That being said, at rookie and A ball often they are working on specific things in games so numbers/stats can be deceiving as to their true ability.

Wilson going yard again. Would like to see him play more 3B, but with Farris at 2B he and Wheeler need to play somewhere.

Luetge could/should be next in line to go to WV. Coming from Rice he should be dominating in the rookie league and be on a fast track. We were all concerned about WV's pitching a month ago, but with Frederickson, Bowman, probably soon to be Luetge, and with a few more good outings possibly Wooten on their way it should be shored up pretty soon.. Had they picked a few more college bats and/or had a few less injuries, Romanski could have been on his way too but he needs to get back in the groove of pitching after needing to DH the first couple of weeks.

Cody should be on his way to Huntsville soon. Ungs and Cate probably have specific roles to be rubber arms to save the prospects from overuse, but Cody should be the 5th starter in Huntsville.

Final: Sarasota (Reds) 1, Brevard County 0, ten innings

SARASOTA - Held scoreless for 23 innings by Brevard County during the past three games, Sarasota wanted to come up with a run any way possible.

When that run finally came, it turned out to be a game-winner.

The Reds scored an unearned run with one out in the bottom of the 10th inning Monday night at Ed Smith Stadium to beat the Manatees 1-0.

With the bases loaded, Sarasota's Jose Castro hit a two-hop grounder to Jimmy Mojica and the Manatees' second baseman threw the ball into the dirt trying to force out pinch runner Daniel Perales at the plate.

The suspenseful triumph in front of 340 spectators gave Sarasota three wins in four games against Brevard County. Sarasota improved to 11-14 during the second half and 44-51 overall.

The series at the stadium was low scoring overall as the hosts outscored the Manatees 11-7 over four games.

Brevard County, which swept the SaraReds in four games at Space Coast Stadium in Viera, dropped to 8-16 in the second half and 43-50 overall.

Another key to Sarasota's latest victory was the outstanding pitching performances of Scott Carroll and Misael DeJesus (3-4), who allowed only five singles, walked just one and struck out 15.

Todd Frazier, Jake Long and Yuber Rodriguez had two hits apiece to lead Sarasota's eight-hit attack.

Brevard County Box Score

As noted above, Chris Cody with another wonderful performance, showing Josh Butler how acquired starting pitchers via trade are supposed to make the GM look good...

Final: Charleston (Yankees) 9, West Virginia 8, 11 innings

West Virginia Site Game Summary:

POWER FALL TO RIVERDOGS IN 11

The Charleston Riverdogs erased a pair of early deficits at Joseph P. Riley Jr. Ballpark on Monday night and won on a walkoff walk in the 11th inning to defeat the West Virginia Power 9-8.

Anderson De La Rosa hit a two-run homer in the top of the second to give the Power an early lead. Eric Fryer's errant throw allowed Austin Krum to score in the bottom of the second. Zelous Wheeler grounded into a 4-6-3 double play that plated Eric Farris in the third to give the Power a 3-1 lead. Abraham Almonte scored on a wild pitch in the third to make it a one-run game again.

The Power scored three times in the fifth to take their biggest lead of the game. Fryer singled in Farris and Steffan Wilson hit a two-run shot, his 15th of the season. The Riverdogs answered with a four-run fifth to tie the game. Bradley Suttle doubled in two runs before Jesus Montero's two-bagger scored Almonte and Farris's errant throw brought in Austin Romine.

Lee Haydel singled in Matt Cline in the sixth inning and De La Rosa delivered an RBI single in the seventh to give the Power another two-run lead before Romine hit a two-run shot in the seventh to tie the game again. Romine began the 11th inning with a double and scored the winning run when Carmen Angelini walked with the bases loaded.

Jonathan Ortiz (2-2) pitched two scoreless innings of relief and fanned four batters to get the victory. Corey Frerichs (4-7) walked in the winning run in the 11th and was tagged with the loss. He allowed just a run on three hits over two and a third. Power pitchers combined to walk the Riverdogs 13 times.

The Power fell to 50-44 on the year and 18-7 in the second half with the loss. The Riverdogs improved to 55-38 on the year and 10-13 in the second half with the win. Five Power players turned in multi-hit games, including Eric Farris who paced the Power with a 3-for-6 performance. Wilson went 2-for-5 and has reached safely in 14 consecutive games and extended his road hitting streak to 20 games. He knocked in 12 runs over the eight-game road trip.

The Power will have Tuesday off and begin a four-game series against the Columbus Catfish at Appalachian Power Park on Wednesday night. Right hander Evan Anundsen (8-4, 3.52) will make the start for the Power and the Catfish will counter with left hander Brian Flores (7-4, 3.62). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM (6:05 Central).

West Virginia Box Score

Evan Frederickson with the most unique three-inning pitching line of the year -- check it out -- get used to it with this kid, apparently; there would have been a 4th wild pitch for Frederickson, but the runner from third was out at the plate; Frederickson actually earned seven outs in his three innings, none on ground balls (two outs on the basepaths); Caleb Gindl in a bad slump (6-for-41, .146) -- more than once as of late, the Power lineup has lit up the scoreboard, only to see Caleb with an 0-for- in the box score's cleanup spot; three catchers in the Power lineup more than once this past week; incredibly sloppy game, but must have been entertaining as all heck for the fans...

Brewers sweep Ghosts

By CURT SYNNESS - Helena Independent Record

Every baseball fan loves offense, but any successful team has to have good pitching and defense, too.

Monday night at Kindrick Legion Field, the Helena Brewers showcased their talents, as they shutout the Casper Ghosts and played error-free ball in their 6-0 victory.

The win gave the Brewers a three-game sweep over Casper and lifted the home team over the .500 mark, at 14-13. Casper falls to 16-10.

"The sweep is OK, but the main thing is to win ballgames," Helena manager Rene Gonzales said, after their third straight triumph over a very good Casper team.

"That's our objective nn to continue to win and get better," Gonzales added.

The Brew Crew outscored the visitors 24-6 in the series.

Four Helena pitchers combined to throw a three-hitter in the whitewash.

Starter Lucas Luetge went five scoreless innings, permitting only one hit and striking out three. He did not walk a batter. Luetge set down the first eight men he faced and held on to a no-hitter going into the fourth stanza.

Casper's Kane Simmons led off the fourth with a scorching double to deep left field, which Chris Dennis made a valiant effort on up against the fence.

"Luetge was coming out after the fifth, regardless, because he was on a pitch count," Gonzales explained. "It was just an outstanding performance by him. He was keeping the hitters off-balance with his breaking ball, but the curve was even more effective because of his fastball."

Luetge is now 3-0, owns a 0.00 ERA and has not given up an earned run in 10 innings pitched.

Santo Manzanillo, Rico Salmon and Wily Peralta divided up the final four innings. Casper starter Dan Houston was stuck with the defeat.

The Capital City group scored two runs in the third frame to break up a pitcher's duel.

After Erik Miller walked, third baseman John Delaney stroked the first hit of the game, an RBI triple to deep right field. He then came home on a sacrifice fly by Michael Marseco.

The Brewers tacked on four more runs the rest of the way, collecting six hits altogether. Corey Kemp drove in two runs with a double, while Mike Roberts added an RBI two-bagger.

Delaney and first baseman Brock Kjeldgaard sparked the defense, each making several spectacular plays.

"It all starts with pitching and defense," said the Brewers' skipper. "And we only had six hits tonight, but our offense was more efficient."

After a day off for the Major League All-Star game, the Brewers will travel to Idaho Falls to take on the Chukars Wednesday.

Helena Box Score

Brock Kjeldgaard on base three times, bit the pitchers deserve the spotlight, enjoy their lines...
