Haha...sure they do. Set your gun at the edge of a corner sometime. As soon as someone runs by it, your gun will move a small bit. Thats when you shoot http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

EDIT: I should mention that snipers are the worst to deal with. They call it 'quick scoping'. They use slight of hand pro to bring the scope up faster and as the scope comes up they flick the stick towards the player and the auto aim hits. Also why hip fire works as well as it does.

There's a lot wrong with CoD MW2 online, you get use to it.

I picked up a copy of F1 2010 the other day (Being a huge open wheel racing fan) and was surprised at how much I'm enjoying it. Any racing fans around may want to give it a shot, I think it'll tide ya over well until the next gran turismo game. Side note though, it is surprisingly difficult.

I need some input on these laptop specs:

Intel Core i5 460M(2.53GHz)

4GB Memory DDR3

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 - Video to be exported to a 1920 x 1080 res monitor when at home.

Really, the only computer game I play is Civilization. Otherwise, I've stuck to console gaming.

I'm hesitating a great deal with this potential purchase, because I'm pretty sure I'm roping myself into limited gaming potential until my next computer purchase comes along in about four years. It would work on today's game (right?) but I'll be S.O.L. 16 months in the future.

Can anyone confirm or deny that suspicion, or add any other pros/cons?

with those specs, I would assume that you'll be fine for games for a good 1-2 years. After that, you'll still be able to game on it, but the newer games will have to be played with all the video settings set to low or even off.

My system is on that stage. Games that came out when I got the system and about 2 years afterward have worked flawlessly. But when I tried the Mafia II demo last month, I had to set it to the lowest resolution (640x480) with all other settings at low/off to get anything remotely close to good FPS on FRAPS. Loved the demo, but it looked like crap. Unfortunately, I'm still a good 2-3 years from upgrading. Nuts.

Civ V lets you play in DirectX 9 or DirectX 10/11 mode. My laptop doesn't meet their "minimum" standards, but can still play in 10/11 mode. There are graphical issues, but the gameplay is fine. Everything runs in 9 mode, but it isn't as pretty (there is no unknown fog, just blackness. And the fog of war is just gray toned land). I think they increased their requirements after being bashed for Civ IV. They undershot the minimum requirements when it was first released. It ended up the minimum requirements only let you play on small maps with one opponent. Anything more and the game chugged to a stop. People were angry, and really let them have it on the forums. I think Civ V's requirements are for the largest map with the most opponents. I play on standard maps and don't have a problem.

i play on the ciV (Civ V) strategic mode, which dumbs down the graphics and makes the whole thing a lot faster.

there's a lot i like about Civ V, but not a huge amount more than Civ IV.

Ugh, I'd lose too much of the immersion factor.

And that's what I'm hearing... Civ V has some bugs and some AI problems. But even if Civ V ~ Civ IV BTS, then Civ V > Civ IV Vanilla, which is very promising.

I did play the Civ V demo on my current rig, but even with the lowest graphics settings the game lagged severely and crashed around turn 70.

good choice. I'm planning on doing the same thing in a couple of years.

I've heard it's lots of fun, unless you screw something up.

Building your own PC is a ton of fun. My advice:

- Do your homework (make sure all your components are compatible).

- Buy the best/newest motherboard you can. You can go cheap on other components if need be.

If you go this route and you're in Milwaukee, I suggest checking out Milwaukeepc.

No thanks they are over priced. I only shop at Newegg or Tiger Direct if I need PC parts. Way to expensive at Milwaukee PC.

I've decided to go novel and pack some punch into a mini-ITX build. I can't seem to find a drawback with today's mini-ITX mobo's besides the lack of expansion spots, something that I don't think will bother me. Someone correct me if I'm wrong though.

I've verified all the dimensions, everything should fit into the case nicely.

Here's my parts list...

I originally was going to replace the included 300W PSU, but then ran across this benchmark test a guy did last week on a mini-ITX build similar to what I'm thinking...

http://www.techreaction.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/power_use.png

Nvidia says the GTX 460 says it maxes out at 160W, while the 5870 in the test above maxes out at 188W. So color me incredibly surprised, but I'm thinking 300W power might just work out. I can always swap out the PSU for a 450W if I have problems, but if I can save $80 bucks, might as well try for it.

Thoughts, comments? And my one question would be regarding cooling. I didn't use any third-party equipment in my build from five years ago, and know little to nothing about CPU cooling. Anyone know if I'll need something for this machine?

Side note: All those parts are currently sitting in my NewEgg shopping cart. While watching a Youtube video, there's a NewEgg advert to the right of the video that is literally just cycling through all of those items or extremely related. Interesting.

  • 3 weeks later...

Giving this thread a 'Rock Band 3' -sized bump, with the game coming out next week. Having learned my lesson from RB1 (and 2), I am going to hold off on buying any of the new, 'Pro' instruments until the first manufacturing run of the hardware has been subject to public scrutiny / real world testing.

(Well, that, and I haven't decided which instruments I'm interested in picking up.)

Finally taking Mass Effect 2 off my pile of shame; I've been playing in the evenings for about a week, and I'm about 3/4ths of the way done. I wanted to make sure I finished this one off before gaming podcasts dropped any pretense of keeping the game spoilered (in other words, before the PS3 version hits), and I'm definitely enjoying it thusfar. Looking at my calendar, it was either play it now, or watch it fall by the wayside when Cataclysm hits.

Juggling handhelds as well, since I've hit the point in Dragon Quest IX (DS) where I'm actively avoiding finishing the game by running around and doing all some of the side-stuff. Valkyria Chronicles II (PSP) is almost as good a game as its PS3 predecessor....but there are a handful of game mechanics-based decisions that I alternate between appreciating and being annoyed over.

Mass Effect 2 was a great great game. Much like the previous game it delivered... that series seems ripe for a movie spin off. If done right, it could be AWESOME.

I just started playing New Vegas, I'm not that far in, just got to the New Mojave Outpost. It's pretty fun so far, it's like a massive Fallout 3 DLC though. So don't expect anything shockingly different, but I loved Fallout 3. So it's firing on all cylinders.

  • 1 month later...

Just to keep the thread alive, I actually managed to knock out another game on my XBox 360 pile of shame: Batman Arkham Asylum. Very well-put together game, and I'm not a DC Comics guy (although I did grow up during the era of the Fox animated series, the voice acting from which was largely transplanted into this game). Not every aspect clicked perfectly for me (I could have used 1-2 fewer Scarecrow sequences, and I gave up on the Joker challenges in order to make sure I finished the game), but I was glad that I snuck that game in before....

Cataclysm. It's like Blizzard took everything that worked in their previous incarnations of WoW (particularly the previous expansion), and made the entire experience work like that. The new leveling areas are a visual spectacle, including an undersea portion that gives the game a 3-dimensional feel (in terms of x-, y-, and z-axis movement, not as in things popping out at you, or wearing special glasses). The dungeon experience from levels 80-85 even feel more difficult than they have previously; it's very easy for a character to die if they aren't paying attention to what they're doing.

Additionally, I am equal parts thrilled and mortified at the announcement of a new SSX game next winter. SSX Tricky is the first game I bought for my Gamecube; SSX 3 is my "stranded on a desert island" game; the music, the characters, the personality, the controls, and the just over-encompassing fun of that game are almost infinitely replayable. I'm actually thinking about trying to track down a PS2 version to play upscale in my PS3 (which is old enough to still have PS2 backwards compatability), I love it that much. That being said, the 2 games in the franchise to have come out after SSX 3 were both seriously flawed, and the reveal trailer for the new game (SSX: Deadly Descent) seems like a tonal mismatch for the franchise that I loved in its heyday.

Can anyone recommend Fallout: New Vegas? I'm looking for 1 game to keep me occupied over winter break. I'm considering FO: New Vegas, DA: Awakenings, or Borderlands. I haven't played any of them and I might just go back to my old friend Mass Effect.

Have you played Fallout 3? Then you've played New Vegas.
