Fall/Winter videogame lineup

Was playing Uncharted 2 last night and received the 'unable to connect to PSN' messages....along with an ill-timed clock reset (I set my clock manually after failing to connect).

I'm only about a third of the way through that game, so starting over wouldn't necessarily kill me...but I really wanted to push through that game this week.

If the problem isn't fixed before 3/9, we've got problems. 8 days from Final Fantasy 13....which is finally sinking in with me, as I've been waiting for this game for a few years now.

Speaking of PS3's, I am finally deciding to put some time into my system. I own all three systems, but got my 40gb PS3 last, and only after I got a sweet deal on it after my boss's kid got sent to prison(don't ask!) I mainly got it for the backward compatibility and the blu-ray function. Always hated the controller and always loved Xbox Live. Fired up the Wii for the exclusives like Mario Kart, but never saw any PS3 exclusives that I needed to have. Up until now, my only game for the PS3 was Buzztime Trivia, but now with The Show, Uncharted and Mag, I am ready to commit.

Couple of questions for the PS3 players here....

1. First game I am getting from goozex is Little Big Planet. I have heard so many great things about it. As I get older, sometimes the less complex games appeal to me more and more. For those that have played it, any recommendations on unique levels to download? I am not even sure how that system works on that game.

2. I have heard of converters that allow you to play with a Xbox controller on the PS3. Any ideas on where to find that?

3. Looking at getting Mag soon. I do not have a headset to communicate with. Any thoughts on what people are using? Not a big fan of spending $50 to get another wireless headset again after buying one for Xbox.

I cannot believe you want to use an xbox controller. It feels like a big mess to me.

The first headset I got was a basic cheap blue tooth. Worked great. I now use a wired P21 and I would never go back to a blue tooth.

If you have a bluetooth headset for a cell-phone, you can simply pair that with the PS3 and you're good to go. The one complaint I've heard about the PS3 is that not enough users actually use the voice chat features, because the console doesn't ship with a headset of any kind. I would think that people playing a game like MAG would be the exception to that rule, however.

(I'll also give the obligatory plug for Valkyria Chronicles, which is only $20 if you can still find it on store shelves.)

My wife likes the Xbox controller more than the PS3 one (I feel the opposite, personally). I don't think there's any sort of adapter to allow you to use an Xbox controller with the PS3, though. There could possibly be some sort of PC Xbox-like controller you could use, though (just speculation on my part).

Valkyria Chronicles looks really interesting. One of my favorite games on the 360 is Civilization Revolution, so might that indicate I would like Valkyria?

By the way, there is a good deal out there to get rid of your old Madden. If you trade in your copy of Madden, you can preorder Madden 11 for $20. Seems like a good time to do it, with baseball games out this week to replace football playing time.

I do not play a ton of real-time strategy games (more of a turn-based, Final Fantasy Tactics / Fire Emblem guy), but Valkyria Chronicles manages to bridge the gap between the different genres a bit. You only control one character at a time, with a set number of character controls comprising a single 'turn.' The enemy then gets their own turn, to move its own units. Unlike most other games, however, enemies within weapon range can shoot at you, and kill you while you're controlling a particular character.

There's a demo for the game in the PSN store (now that PSN appears to be working again), based off a very early chapter in the game. Since the game caught your attention, I'd recommend trying that first.

They are planning on releasing DA:O2 less than a year from now. They are really supporting this franchise a lot.

Love Borderlands. It is one of those games where I plan on playing for an hour and end up playing several hours. Have been playing The Secret Armory of General Knoxx quite a bit. Pretty good DLC.

Fan is short for fanatic.

I blame Wang.

Anyone play Red Dead Redemption yet? I just ordered it off of amazon.com, which comes with a $20 coupon. It's supposed to be GTA in the wild west.

Yes, and with Amazon you get a code for the Golden Gun dl (lets you gain fame quicker or something).

Its pretty awesome so far and has kept me distracted from how bad the Brewers have become the last 2 nights.

At first when I watched the Backbreaker trailer I thought it didn't look that interesting... and then I saw it's going to be an online game, with fully customizable logos, unis, etc. It's got a chance to be huge imo, WoW for football

Really? I got the $20, but I never got a golden guns code. Was it pre-order only?

They emailed me the code but one that didn't work was also included in the packaging from Amazon. Ironically, I still haven't gotten my $20.

I would like to but I decided to put my money into a brewing kit instead. I loved the first one and am looking forward to Crackdown2 when I can buy it for $20 on E-bay.

Quick question for those that have played the Civ series on the computer........I see that Civ 5 is coming out soon, and I am on the fence on buying it. My first Civ experience was the Civ series on the Xbox, and its still one of my go to games late at night. However, I know it was dumbed down for the consoles, and am fearful that jumping to the computer version might be a huge step. I have heard of these epic eight hour game lengths and not sure if I have that kind of spare time to devote to my gaming life with school and work. Should I stick with what I like or make the jump to full nerd status?

By the way, I guess I should update a few reviews that I have been playing recently. Goozex had a free trades for PS3 titles this month, and caught up on a few games that have been tempting me lately.

1. 3D Dot Game Heroes. I know everybody compares this to old Nintendo Zelda, but you simply can't compare it to anything else. For an older guy that grew up on the series, this is exactly what you would want to play. Very simple controls, old school puzzles and dungeons and some humor from the developers if you know your video game history. Don't pay full price, but if you can get this used for $20 jump on this.

2. Uncharted 2. Simply the best single player game experience on any current gen system. Again, simple controls are the key(except for grenade tossing) which lets you still have input, but also allows the full cinematic showing to unfold. Yes, its like a summer blockbuster movie in viewing, with a ton of cut scenes that are not too long that you are looking to skip them. The game has the perfect mix of action on one level, to puzzle solving on another level and tons of humor that make every level totally unique from each other. Didn't try the online modes as I had to flip it quick, but the single player mode is worth it alone.

3. Heavy Rain. I really wanted to like this game. However after coming off playing Uncharted 2, this was a big letdown. I get what they are trying to do. Make a game where the story is the key and the player is along for the ride to make decisions with simple button choices to confirm them. Everything feels so stiff though, and although I am only a few hours in on the game, I am already tempted to flip this right away.

Also, just wanted to pass along a deal that I got. Went to Best Buy to preorder Madden 11. Now I know places like Amazon are having $20 off a future game purchase with a purchase of Madden, but I kinda like the deal at Best Buy. Basically, for a $5 preorder, you get a $10 certificate if you are a reward member, but also in the box is a free code for the Madden Arcade game they came out with this past year. Its a fun Blitz style game, and you can always change your mind on where you want to buy Madden and you still get the free Madden Arcade game for just $5.
