Arizona Box Score

Florida high schooler Damon Krestalude continues to impress, including a wonderful ground ball ratio in his four outings thus far (10.2 IP, 3 BB, 12 K's); A-Crew batters draw no free passes while fanning nine times, that's getting old...

the cool thing about having family in Savannah is going to baseball things...

the downside is that i don't get to stay for anything close to the whole game...

that said:

1. Evan Anundsen has a ton of movement on his pitches, but he tops out generously at 88. I say generously because the highest the stadium gun had him was 88...i sat with a scout for a moment with a Stalker gun and the fastest he had him was at 86. So, take that into account with Anundsen. That said, they hit it straight down every single time and his off speed stuff comes in in the 60's, so he works the off speed stuff in very effectively.

2. Eric Farris is a clone of Callix Crabbe---he's better than his stats have suggested all year, but he's not going to develop into much more than a utility guy at best.

3. Eric Fryer reminds me of Andrew LeFave---He's a professional hitter. He went opposite field twice in the last two games with runners on...He didn't seem to have a ery good arm in LF however, which was surprising since he's a catcher.

4. Caleb Gindl missed a long double in the 1st only because the Sand Gnat CFer is really fast...

Bulter.. *sigh*... I wonder what our scouts saw in this guy... I only remember 1 good outing from him all year. I'm sure there had to be more, but the Crew sure got fleeced in that deal.

I've been so consumed with pitching lines that I didn't even notice Haydel has average up over .275, not too shabby.

Final: Lakeland (Tigers) 7, Brevard County 5

Brevard County Box Score

Manatees rallied from a 5-2 deficit to tie after eight before the Flying Tigers scored two in the 9th off Josh Wahpepah and Mike McClendon; as noted above, RHP Josh Butler struggled yet again -- only 2.1 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 1 HBP, 3 BB, plus LHP Bobby Bramhall stranded two runners for him as part of a wonderful (again) middle relief effort; Brevard stranded 11; Taylor Green singled twice in five AB's and had a two-out RBI; night off for Stephen Chapman against a southpaw, so utility man Jimmy Mojica was your first baseman...

Brevard County Game Log

Bramhall's "strand" in the 3rd inning was aided big-time by Chuckie Caufield's throw to the plate to nail a runner from right field; Manatees scored one in the 7th as part of their comeback, but had the bases loaded, one out, and didn't capitalize for more; the bottom of the 8th's two-run rally also ended prematurely with Green hoping to take an extra base on his two-out RBI single...

Even when Brent Brewer is good, he's bad: he's 3-3 with a stolen base, but he was caught stealing once and also picked off.

I really dislike how MiLB.com indicates this on their box scores, as Brewer was only caught stealing once. If the pickoff play ends at first base, it goes down as a pickoff, but if the runner takes off for second and is thrown out, the box score marks both the pickoff and the caught stealing attempt.

Not to be negative, but he's got a 22/68 BB/K in 334 ABs and he's only slugging .341. He's going to have to hit well over .300 to be valuable with those kind of secondary skills.

Ah, thanks for the heads up. I was kind of wondering if that was the case, but I should have gone into the game log and checked. I agree, their current method doesn't make any sense.

nothing like having my head in my butt... last time I looked seriously at him he was floating around .220.

Keep in mind that one's future potential doesn't always translate in the box scores. His stuff might still be there, but his command and other parts of his game could be way off.

Also, keep in mind that the Brewers had scouting notes on this guy when he came out of college. They showed quite a bit of interest in him the year he was drafted by the Rays early coming out of San Diego, so the trade may have been an instance in which they dealt Gross (a player at the time that somewhat seemed like the odd man out given Kapler's early season success and Cameron's impending return) for a player that they had previously liked and considered using an early-round pick to obtain.

It is difficult to swallow now since the Brewers could really a LH bat off the bench, but I really can't blame them for the deal since it seemed like an almost no-brainer deal to me when it was made.

Final: Huntsville 9, Chattanooga (Reds) 8

Huntsville Site Game Summary:

Stars Survive Late Rally to Down Looks

Offense Keeps Rolling Right Along in Victory
By Brett Pollock / Huntsville Stars

Angel Salome collected three hits and knocked in three runs for a second straight night to pace a 14-hit attack in leading Huntsville to a 9-8 victory over Chattanooga Thursday night in the third of a five-game set at AT&T Field. The Stars improved to 13-10 in the second half but could not gain ground on victorious Tennessee in the North Division, while the Lookouts dropped to 10-13 and fell six games behind the Smokies. The Stars won a fourth straight game for the first time since sweeping a five-game set at Smokies Park from May 10-14.

Juan Sandoval started the bottom of the ninth on the hill for Huntsville with a 9-7 lead and gave up a leadoff single to Drew Stubbs and walked Tonys Gutierrez with one out before Drew Anderson singled home Stubbs to cut the lead to one. Sandoval then struck out Sean Henry and got Justin Turner to fly out to end the game to earn his second save of the series and 11th of the season. Stubbs had four hits in his first game at the double-A level.

Cole Gillespie was hit with one out in the sixth, J.R. Hopf walked and both runners moved up on a wild pitch by starter James Avery then came in to score on a double by Mike Bell that tied the game at six. Michael Brantley, making his first appearance in two weeks after being sidelined by a sprained right ankle, lined a pinch-hit single into left field to score Bell to give the Stars their first lead and spell the end of the night for Avery, who was charged with seven runs on eight hits, while walking one and matching a season-high with seven strikeouts. He took the loss to drop to 6-6 overall and 0-2 against Huntsville.

Lorenzo Cain tripled in a run with one out in the eighth to push the visitors lead to 8-6 but the Stars could not bring him around to add to their advantage. Jason Shiell took over for David Johnson, who threw two shutout innings in relief, to start the eighth and gave up a run-scoring double with one out to Danny Dorn that trimmed the lead to 8-7. The veteran right-hander retired the next two batters to end the frame.

Gillespie's run-scoring hit in the ninth gave the Stars a two-run lead again but he was doubled off from second base on a fly ball out to end the inning. The Stars strung together four singles in the inning and have now totaled 38 runs on 61 hits during their winning streak, with at least 13 hits in all four games.

The Lookouts took the lead in the first inning for a second straight night on a Dorn double play grounder that scored Henry. The Stars have allowed the first run in six of their last seven games. Angel Salome's leadoff long ball in the second, his eighth of the season and third against Avery, got the game tied. Chattanooga reclaimed the lead in the home second against Mike Jones on a run-scoring hit by Gutierrez and a two-out, two-run single by Turner. Huntsville came right back to plate three runs in the top of the third on a run-scoring hit by Alcides Escobar and a two-out, two-run double by Salome, who has knocked in a run in 12 of his last 19 games.

Jones was taken out in the fourth with one out after issuing two walks and replaced by Patrick Ryan, who walked Turner to load the bases before Dorn singled in two runs to put the home team back on top, 6-4. Ryan then squelched the rally and got Henry to bounce into an inning-ending double play in the fifth with the bases loaded to earn his third win of the season with 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.

The series continues Friday night with right-hander Nic Ungs starting for Huntsville against Lookouts' southpaw Ben Jukich. Coverage of the game begins at 6:00 pm central time and can be heard locally on SportsRadio 730 WUMP and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com and www.730ump.com.

Huntsville Box Score

What's not to like about Angel Salome's line -- .343 / .398 / .516 (.914 OPS) -- it's true, where's the national pub? To think if Angel were a Yankee or Red Sox farmhand; welcome back, Michael Brantley; I guess commenting on Mike Jones here wouldn't solve anything -- but all indications are he's a good kid who's worked hard, and this is his 8th year in the system, time flies, huh? It probably seems like forever for Mike...

Final: West Virginia 5, Savannah (Mets) 4

West Virginia Site Game Summary:

POWER SWEEP SAND GNATS

The West Virginia Power matched their longest winning streak of the season on Thursday night at Grayson Stadium as they defeated the Savannah Sand Gnats 5-4 to win their sixth game in a row, and they swept the Sand Gnats in the process.

West Virginia scored first on Steffan Wilson's two-run triple in the top of the first inning. On the play, Greg Veloz's errant relay throw allowed Wilson to score. The Sand Gnats scored twice in the bottom of the first on a double from Sean McCraw. The Power added to their lead in the second inning when Matt Cline scored on an errant throw from Maikel Cleto. Wilson struck again in the third inning on an RBI double to score Caleb Gindl.

In the bottom of the third inning with runners on second and third, the game was delayed by 40 minutes due to rain. During the delay a mistake on the Savannah lineup card was revealed. Francisco Pena was originally in the lineup as a designated hitter batting sixth and Richard Pena was listed as the right fielder batting seventh. It was revealed during the delay on the lineup card held by umpire Bryan Dormaier that the two were switched and the two Pena's batted out of order. Because of the violation, Francisco Pena was taken out of the game, Richard Pena had to bat sixth, and the pitcher occupied the seventh spot in the order.

McCraw's groundout after the delay in the third scored Veloz to make it a two-run game. The Sand Gnats scored one final time when B.J. Hubbert hit a pinch-hit home run in the seventh inning.

Evan Anundsen (8-4) battled through six and a third, allowing four runs on seven hits and came away with the victory. Corey Frerichs (7) allowed just a hit over two and two-thirds scoreless innings of relief to get the save. Cleto (3-7) was tagged with the loss after allowing five runs on seven hits over three innings.

The Power improved to 48-42 on the year and 16-5 in the second half with the win. The Sand Gnats fell to 40-51 on the year and 7-14 in the second half with the loss. Four Power players turned in multi-hit games. Steffan Wilson knocked in three runs and extended his road hitting streak to 16 games. Eric Fryer went 2-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to 11 games and Eric Farris singled in the first inning to push his hitting streak to 13 games. West Virginia has won three games in a row by one run and they have won four out of their last six by the same margin.

The Power will begin a four game series against the Charleston Riverdogs at Joseph P. Riley Jr. Ballpark in Charleston, South Carolina on Friday night. Right hander Amaury Rivas (6-3, 3.69) will make the start for the Power and the Riverdogs will counter with right hander Lance Pendleton (6-4, 2.64). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM (6:05 Central).

West Virginia Box Score

Even though technically it wasn't a "quality start" for Evan Anundsen, Brewer coaches would tell you otherwise, as Anundsen improves on his already stellar 2.50 GB/FB ratio with a 12-to-3 effort here with only one walk; with eight wins now, Anundsen is ahead in the race for Organizational Pitcher of the Year honors, as we're discussing on another thread in this forum -- the Brewers aren't shy about honoring low-A players that way, as Taylor Green learned last season; Corey Frerichs is having one heck of a year out of the pen, as we've noted before; Steffan Wilson is a young 22, and continues to prove he's worthy of serious middle-of-the-order prospect status, 36 of his 82 hits for extra bases, with a double and triple here...
