Chances of trading Jeff Suppan this offseason?

Brewer Fanatic Contributor

I'm always stumped by the thought that fast = leadoff hitter. Pierre is getting worse by the year at getting on base, which is far more important than being fast. The speed does you no good if it's only on base 32% of the time.

And Corey Patterson on the Brewers with his sub .275 OBP? Please no.

Another guy with bad contract that could be exchanged for Suppan is Eric Byrnes. Byrnes has come out and said he'd waive his no-trade clause if he likes where he would be going. Byrnes is owed $22 million over 2 years.

He's certainly capable of giving you what Cameron does offensively with better contact. He's not Cameron defensively, but he's played there.

As long as Corey Patterson stays away from Dusty Baker he plays decent. Maybe Baker lets Patterson get away with some things that his other managers haven't allowed him to get away with and that is why he plays better than when he is with Baker. His 2006 and 2007 seasons were alright for a #7 or a #8 hitter. I still wouldn't sign him but I would rather have Patterson than Pierre.

So after watching Soup today, I'm as disgusted as I'm sure all of you are - dude frustrates me to no end.

With plenty of money off the books and the need for another solid starting pitcher, does anyone see an equally-overpaid but superior pitcher to target in trade? That is, if Suppan is due $27MM including the buyout for the next two years, and we could say he's maybe worth $13MM as a free agent this year, could we find a pitcher worth $20MM who's paid $34MM on a team that'd like to shed payroll?

The 2 years you quote as his "good" years he had an OBP of .304 and .314. Getting a guy with a OBP you'd expect from a backup catcher is really counterproductive to what this offense will need. I wouldn't read too much into what he did with or without Dusty Baker, he's just not a good ballplayer.

At least with someone like Byrnes, you're looking at a guy who's good years were actually.......good.

Suppan and a lower level OF prospect to the Yankees for Johnny Damon. Unlike Pierre, Damon is only overpaid for one more year instead of 3, plus he can actually take a walk. It may interest both teams, or it may not, but I like it much better than the Pierre idea.

Aren't Damon's days as a decent outfielder over? I thought he was being used as a DH as recently as June.

Suppan has much, much more value to this team then Pierre. He's not a bad thing to have in the rotation for the next two years. He's just so expensive and we might have better in Villy and McClung. He's the type of pitcher who helps you get through the season. He probably has no buisness starting a post-season game this year, but with no Sheets and no confidence in Parra, they ended up leaning against the "big-game pitcher" silliness that got him the deal in the first place.

What about dealing Suppan for a guy that fits a need, like Beltre?
I didn't realize how awful Seattle's pitching was this season. I guess it depends on what the Mariners goal is in 2009. If they think they can contend in 2009, this might make sense. But if they are going to have to rebuild, it doesn't make sense to add 2 years of Suppan's contract.

I knew that this thread would come up, and while I think it is an overreaction to want Suppan out of town and think he's washed up, it will be difficult for Brewers fans to forgive him for how poorly he has pitched at the end of this season. It all hinges though on CC and Sheets - if neither are back, then they will need Suppan.

If the Brewers decide to break the bank on CC, the deal Briggs mentioned (Suppan for Byrnes, and don't bring back Cameron) might be optimal for payroll purposes.

I know this would probably be a long shot, but the Tigers are talking about dealing Magglio Ordonez and are in need of SP, SS, and catching

I wonder if they would bite on something along the lines of Hardy and Suppan for Ordonez and possibly Ramon Santiago (fill Counsell's utl. role and insurance for Escobar) ? or maybe i'm way undervalueing Maggs. they would get their SS they're looking for and a #4 or #5 SP and the Brewers would be taking on about 3 million (suppan 12.5 + hardy 5 = 17.5? maggs 18 + santiago 2.5 = 20.5?)

Hart could then be used in a deal to get a 3B/2B or help upgrade the SP

If that's not enough for the tigers, maybe the crew could throw in Fryer seeing as he looks to be behind Salome, Lucroy, and now Lowrie

That's the problem. I have no problem with a guy like Suppan as my #5 starter...MAYBE even #4 IF his contract matched that role. It's the reson trading him will be so difficult. I can't think of a team that would want to take on his contract knowing there is no upside. What you see is what you get.
