CC Sabathia to the Brewers for Matt LaPorta, Zach Jackson, Rob Bryson, and Michael Brantley

And That

Somebody here said we overpaid for CC. I agree. But I also think it's the right thing to do. It's something small market teams need to do. Go for the gold as long as you can restock your system while doing it. Next year really could be a down year since we'll need virtually a new pitching staff (slight exaggeration I know). So this is it. The eggs are in the basket.

Open question...was Melvin/Gord/Jack Z's decision to keep not only LaPorta, but the entire gang of bats in Huntsville a stroke of genius? Hitter's park, stacked lineup...huge production. A number of these guys would be at AAA in any other organization. Would LaPorta and crew look as good if they were in AAA this year? Just thinking...

Has the organization ever actually considered moving Hardy or is this just your speculation.

Just my speculation. But I've heard the topic raised before in various places. Also, it makes logical sense. The team wants to put out the best possible defense. Considering how untouchable Escobar apparently is, you keep his gold glove calibur glove at short. He's got much better range than Hardy. Moving Escobar to 3rd would be a waste.

Next year is not necessarily going to be a down year. If we did not do this trade we would have lost Sheets but gained Yovanni. IMO not that big of drop considering Sheets injury history (I realize Yovanni is also injured but that was a freak injury and it looked horrible as well). We will also likely be adding Gamel somewhere. IMO we can still compete for the playoffs next year assuming we are able to pick up a few solid free agents with the money gained from the players we lose.

Two things:

1. Once again, please be aware of the board's quote guidelines. It's not like it was in the Sabathia transaction thread, but there've still been a few that have required mod cleanup (and some that should have been cleaned up, but bypassed).

2. If someone uses a cuss that gets filtered, please don't quote it. It makes us cranky. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

Giving up LaPorta is a tough but getting one of the absolute best pitchers in the game makes it worth the gamble. He's the type of pitcher than can really help propel us to the playoffs and once in the playoffs the one two punch of Sheets and Sabathia (aka the S and S Express) will make us very tough to beat. It's my birthday today and I couldn't have asked for a better birthday present than Sabathia going to the Brewers..

Agreed, I mean we while have $20+ million coming off the books next year plus the contracts of Hall and Suppan in the following 2 years. There is certianly room for a big FA starting pitcher this year.

I will still like this trade ven if Green is a part of it, by no means does it guarantee us a playoff spot but it sure as heck improves our odds. I would like to add another bullpen arm but just by adding CC our bullpen will improve. You can almost expect CC and Sheets to go at least 7, so we would have a decent shot of just having to use Torres, Riske, and Shouse in those games. Therefore eliminating our reliace on Mota and Gagne

Keith Law think the Brewers have the best pitcher in the NL.

Here's the free part of his insider article...

The part I liked most was this...

He's death on lefties.

I think some are forgetting that LaPorta might be somewhat of a gamble. He had injury problems in college. He is raking in AA, but he is in a very good lineup. He is not an automatic star, just a good prospect.

No, he's a star. Too bad I dont have him.

So 15 Sabathia starts vs. 15 Bush starts is only likelihood of winning two more games? Doesn't seem right.

I know it doesn't sound right. These kind of midseason trades always feel like they should have a larger impact but on average, they really shouldn't be expected to.

Here's the rough numbers I used. A team with an average offense and average bullpen goes from winning around 50% of their games with Bush starting (assuming 6 IP and a 4.75 RA) to about 60% with Sabathia (6-1/3, 3.5 RA). That 10% is an absolutely huge difference in baseball. A team who can win at a 60% rate for a season wins 97 games, after all. 10% x 15 starts = 1.5 wins.

I threw in an extra half win since Bush still has value to the team in the bullpen and in case I was shortchanging Sabathia's value. No, I did not include the prospect of Sabathia inspiring Suppan to pitch better or Weeks to raise his OBP.

If the FSN pre-game show opens with that theme, you are totally to blame SF. I definitely would not put it by them, at all.

I'm guessing the trade is announced tomorrow and they don't officially add C.C. to the roster until Tuesday to get one more day of a bullpen arm?

First quotes?

Huntsville Stars outfielder Matt LaPorta verified he was part of the Milwaukee Brewers trade for Cleveland Indians pitcher C.C. Sabathia finalized Sunday night. "It is a little unsettling (but) it's a business decision," said LaPorta, who said he was held out of Sunday's Double-A game against Birmingham because the Brewers didn't want to risk injury.

The Brewers wouldn't confirm the deal, but LaPorta said he learned it was finalized.

"I hope (the trade) works out for both teams," said the Brewers' 2007 first-round draft pick. "It's a great opportunity with another organization."

I always feel a little bad for these young kids when they get traded and their names get thrown though the mud. I am at fault much like a lot of others, looking at these people like they are chess pieces they can swapped in and out with no real effects on their lives. I know, the nature of the buisness and all.

He also states, "LaPorta projects as a "three true outcomes" player, meaning that he'll draw walks and hit home runs, but will also strike out quite a bit." Could we have possibly let a Branyan apprentice go?

A39...if I could throw faster than 65...you'd be my agent, but I'm guessing bald, fat middle age dudes aren't your bread and butter.

Maybe I'm just giddy from all of the excitement, or maybe it's because I'm a balding 40 year old that throws about 65, but that post made me laugh really hard.

As far as the trade... last week I was against trading Gamel or LaPorta for a rental but I am really glad that Doug pulled the trigger and did it without giving up too much more. I picked up four tickets for Tuesday, see some of you there.

The demand for shortstops, in particular, is rising. Hardy, second in OPS only to the Marlins' Hanley Ramirez among NL shortstops, could bring a quality young starting pitcher - think Giants right-hander Matt Cain - if he is packaged with the right youngsters.

The Brewers then could replace Hardy with Class AA shortstop Alcides Escobar, whom they signed at age 16 as an international free agent out of Venezuela. Escobar already is considered a superior defender to Hardy, though he might struggle offensively for a time.

From Rosenthals Article.

Id do a JJ for Cain trade all day and twice on Sundays. Imagine that rotation....
