Final: Daytona (Cubs) 7, Brevard County 4

Game Summary from the Daytona site:

Cubs Return Home With Series Win Over Manatees

Bullpen Blow Late Lead Again, But Offense Pulls Through

[VIERA, FL] The rubber match of the current series against Brevard County proved to be a hard fought battle. Daytona was able to hold off the Manatees and win their second straight series after a 7-4 win.

Hung-Wen Chen was coming off a nine strikeout performance last week against the St. Lucie Mets. Today, he played damage control as he gave up three home runs. The first of those came in the first inning when Jonathan Lucroy hit a solo-shot.

Chen did give up three homers, but just like the first one to Lucroy, they were all solo home runs. That allowed Chen to hang in the game longer than anyone would expect a man who gives up three bombs to. With the first inning out of the way, the Cubs had to play a little bit of comeback.

The second Manatees' run came across the plate in the fourth. Lucroy connected again for his second home run of the day. It happened again with nobody on base, but made the score 2-0.

Daytona's offense came to life in the fifth inning. It almost didn't happen. Jonathan Mota and Darwin Barney were the first two men to the plate and were also the first two outs of the inning. Jose Made then connected with a two-out single. Jim Adduci and Yusuf Carter were able to coax walks out of Jeremy Jeffress to load the bases. It's never a good idea to load the bases for Blake Lalli.

Lalli took full advantage and stroked a single to left field. That brought in Made and Adduci and made the score 2-2. Lalli was also able to advance a base when he caught the infield sleeping after the play. That put runners on second and third for Robinson Chirinos. Chirinos provided the third hit of the inning to bring in two more runs and give Daytona a 4-2 lead.

It became a one-run affair in the fifth when Chen gave up his third home run. This time it was Stephen Chapman with a solo home run.

Things got very interesting in the eighth. Carter made a catch in rightfield and dropped the ball on the exchange from his glove. The umpiring crew ruled that it was not a catch. That brought manager Jody Davis out of the dugout. In the previous inning, Manatees skipper Mike Guerrero argued a call for nearly five minutes and was not ejected. Davis didn't fare the same as he was promptly tossed from the game. It was the second time Davis has been ejected by the same umpiring crew in ten days. Carter didn't fare any better as he was removed by the umpiring crew as well.

With Ty Wright unable to play, the Cubs were strapped and low on outfielders after Carter's ejection. That forced Richie Zisk to put reliever Jayson Ruhlman into the game as an outfielder.

After all the hoopla, Brevard County tied the game in the eighth on a Chuckie Caufield sacrifice fly.

Daytona got the lead back for good in the ninth. Barney led off with a walk against Jeffress. He then moved to third when Made singled. Made stole second to put two men in scoring position which brought Adduci to the plate. Adduci singled to left to bring in both base runners to put the Cubs back on top. Lalli later hit a sac fly to bring in another Cubs' run and make the score 7-4. Todd Blackford picks up the win in relief. Jeffress is charged with the loss.

Brevard County Box Score

Jonathan Lucroy's home runs were to center field, then right -- good thing, as usual, wind in from left field at 11 MPH; Jeffress struck out ten and walked four in his stint, and the strategy to have "a finisher mentality" provided a top-notch opportunity as Jeffress headed to the 9th in a tie game, but a walk, his own error on a sac bunt, and a single spelled the end of Jeremy's afternoon; LHP Bobby Bramhall three scoreless innings in his "start"; Taylor Green 0-for-3 with a walk -- will he still be a Brewer at day's end? Brent Brewer has a .472 OPS in 81 Brevard AB's -- he's the infamous Josh Murray, minus Murray's Vanilla Ice attitude -- Murray may have been Jack Z.'s worst draft pick ever, bar none...

Escobar, Gamel, Parejo, Salome, Gillespie, Hopf, Bell, Garciaparra, Maldanado all in the Huntsville lineup.

Only LaPorta absent without an injury excuse. Glad to see Escobar, Gamel, Gillespie and Salome all in there!

Oddly enough, Escobar is in RF tonight.

Final: Arizona Cubs 6, Arizona Brewers 1

Arizona Box Score

Can't wait to see catcher Shawn Zarraga in West Virginia next year, no way he'll be in short-season ball again -- he had two doubles today, two of the A-Crew's three hits; outfielder Erik Miller was a weak performer last season, and had a golden sombrero (0-for-4, 4 K's) in his debut today; another Miller (Greg) pitched well, as did LHP Daniel Meadows -- Meadows hasn't allowed an earned run in eight innings thus far; 17-year-old Canadian Stosh Wawrzasek had a tough start to his first pro inning, but if you can "settle down" within a single inning, he did; Brewers drew five walks, but stranded eight; the Cubs' LHP Rich Hill allowed only two baserunners in four innings; 17-year-old OF Hitaniel Arias absent again -- we may have to dip deep into our Brewer rolodex to get any update there, we'll give it a few more days...

So, projecting to next year, our catching will look like this:

MLB -- Kendall
AAA -- Salome
AA -- Lucroy
A+ -- Fryer
A -- Zarraga
R+ -- Lawrie

And that doesn't include Palmisano or Rottino.

Starting to look really solid!

Final: Billings (Reds) 5, Helena 4

Helena Box Score

Tough night for 2nd round RHP Cody Adams, the losing pitcher in relief; starter Trey Watten allowed eight baserunners, but held the Mustangs scoreless in his five innings; 13 of Brock Kjeldgaard's 23 hits have gone for extra bases; a tidy two hour, 17 minute affair...

Helena Game Log

Right fielder Mike Vass gunned down a man at the plate to end the 2nd inning, which helped Trey Watten, naturally; the first 12 Brewers went down in order until Kjeldgaard's 5th inning home run -- 18 of the first 19 Brewers were retired; Adams was hit hard in the 8th, among the carnage four doubles, three listed as line drives; tough break for the H-Crew in the 9th, as Chris Dennis, on first base with one out, moved to second on Derrick Alfonso's single, but was also out at 2nd on the play (over-ran?) -- we'll check audio later on...
