Matt Holliday available

Matt Holliday is apparently very available right now. Trading with Colorado IMO makes a lot of sense. It seems they want pitching prospects back, but they also need to replace Holliday when they deal him.

Why not a: Mike Cameron, Matt LaPorta, and Jeremy Jeffress + 2 other guys like (Zach Jack/Brad Nelson)

Im pretty sure this could get it done. It would be an upgrade in our OF with Hart moving to Center and we'd have a guy for years to come who is an All-Star and playoff proven?

Plus he plays every day, CC plays every 5th day and will be gone at the end of the season.

so you deal him a few years from now... he's in his mid-20's. Play the arby game with him and when it comes time to deal him... deal him. Just like we will do with Prince.

At this point in time the Brewers cannot afford to trade their top pitching prospects

I'd say "Just say no to Colorado HITTERS." If the Brewers really want to shift Hart to CF this season and displace Cameron (not sure why they'd bother), a much cheaper alternative (in terms of loss of talent due to trade) who would likely give very similar overall production to Holliday would be Brian Giles from the Padres.

For that matter, why not just sign He Who Shall Not Be Named for the league minimum, since that's what his agent says he's offering his services for - he's still probably a significantly better hitter than anybody else you could get.

If they want another corner outfielder, they should just sign Bonds. He'd be cheaper and no talent would have to go out the door.

And before people get all up in arms, the Brewers have plenty of guys who have actually tested positive for things. It may be an unpopular move, but it would help more (short and long-term) than trading for Holliday would.

Bringing this back since Holliday is still available.

While O'Dowd is open to different packages depending on the trading partner, he'd like to acquire a young pitcher who could become a No. 2-type starter as part of the package.

This quote is from Jon Heyman from SI. I don't think the Brewers should trade for Holliday though especially since he would only be around for 1 year. I wouldn't send a No. 2-type starter plus for just one season of Holliday.

Potential lineup of:

1. Weeks 2B

2. Hardy SS

3. Braun LF

4. Fielder 1B

5. Holliday RF

6. Hall/Branyan/Lamb 3B

7. Cameron CF

8. Kendall/Rivera C

I would guess that Hart would have to be packaged in a deal to get Holliday along with Parra and Braddock/Periard/Salome/Lucroy. Would be more if Holliday would be available for more than one year. The offense would be nice but only having Gallardo, Bush, McClung, Suppan, and Villanueva as your starters. I'm not sure that would even get you the amount of wins the Brewers had in 2007 the pitching would be OK but you are limiting your bullpen by taking out McClung and Villanueva having just Gallardo, Parra, Bush, Suppan, and McClung/Villanueva is bad enough.

Why exactly would we be trading for another outfielder?

I think the Brewers have to explore all opportunities to improve. Their OF is hardly set. Cameron has an option. Hart was terrible down the stretch. Their lineup needs some lefthanded presence. Kapler isn't yet signed for next season. Gwynn might have run out of chances.

They really could use a leadoff lefty swinging CF or a disciplined professional high average run producing lefty swinging corner more than another right handed slugger. There was nothing wrong with Holliday's road splits in 08: .308/.405/.486 though. He's got the plate discipline our guys don't have.

In the off chance the Brewers did sign CC, I'd be willing to include Bush in a package for Holliday. One year of Holliday for $13.5 million > one year of Cameron for $10 million. Plus he's sure to be a Type A and Cameron is not.

It would involve moving some of the current guys around though. But I really don't see it happening.

I wouldn't send a No. 2-type starter plus for just one season of Holliday.

Especially since the Brewers are likely to be looking to acquire the same no. 2-type starter this offseason as well.

Really, and deal the Brewers make this offseason for a bat in trade probably has to bring an arm back as well. Considering that the Rockies need an arm like the Brewers do, they're probably not a good fit at all.

Actually he's worse. Taveras is among the best defensive CFers in the game. Pierre is terrible at this point. Taveras and Pierre are very close offensively, Taveras just had a bad BABIP year making him look worse.

And even when you consider the terrible offensive year by Taveras, I'm sure the Rockies would rather pay him to suck than pay Pierre to suck since Taveras is going to cost much less.

Saw a blurb on ESPN that the Rockies are willing to trade Holliday before his final contract year. Not sure if he's a guy the Brewers would want to pursue but I thought it'd be an interesting topic to toss around.

He's not a lefty hitter, but hits righties better anyways, has big home road splits, but had respectable .892 and .860 OPS's on the road the last 2 seasons. If we could get him for Hart, one of our catching prospects, and Periard I would consider it. He would be a great addition to our linuep w/ his OBP.

But his away splits over the last 2 seasons are .301/.374/.485 in 07', and .308/.405/.486 in 08', so wouldn't you say that he is more likely to put up number close to that than his minor league numbers or numbers he put up 3 years ago or later?
