Also, why was Jackson not intentionally walked to create a force at home and a possible double play? It's not like he really matters as a base runner with the winning run at second.

that's something I was wondering too. At least give him the unintentional intentional walk and give him nothing to hit.

I said before the start of the road trip that I'd be thrilled with a 5-5 record. I'm still thrilled. We shouldn't have won last night, we shouldn't have lost today.

And we highlighted the need for another arm in the bullpen. I'm not really that bummed a lot... losses like this happen because baseball is a really weird game.

To me it isn't as easy as the Brewers shouldn't have won last night and the DBacks shouldn't have won today. The Brewers were like 15% to win last night. Today the DBacks were like .00001% to win. Losses like this don't really happen.

Of course it is only one loss, but it's hard to feel thrilled right now when they were a shoe-in for a 6-4 trip.

Assuming the Cubs lose tonight(and they'll probably shell Lincecum now), that would make 4 games on this road trip that the Brewers had a chance to gain ground and failed to do so. They could be .5 game out. There is not a worse team in baseball at capitalizing on the 1st place teams losses then the Brewers. How exactly do they intend to gain ground that way?? Man, I have never been so frustrated.

Mota gave up two balls that didn't make it out of the infield and a walk, not exactly a blowup. That said, I do believe we need two arms, one starter and one in the pen, if we are serious about this thing.

It's hard to place the blame anywhere, besides maybe with Mota's walk (but one walk should not lead to 6 runs). It just seemed like all the luck we had the previous 26 innings just got overturned in about 8 minutes. If the two Mota grounders are 6 inches to the left, they're easy outs. Shouse was probably due for a bad outing. Torres' was definitely due, and his arm is probably about to fall off.

i can't blame ned on this one, this is soley on Mota. You brought him in to right the ship after possibility tipping pitches and he loads up the bases. Ned did right by bringing in shouse to face the lefty and that didn't work out. Finally Torres was bought in at the right point to save it and he failed. This is one where Ned is a whipping boy and he doesn't deserve it.

I am fine with leaving Mota in until the tying run was on deck. Bottom line is the pen needs to get someone out.

Wow, I was listening to that meltdown in the car on my way home from work. I wanted to pull off the side of the road and just throw a tantrum. We hit Webb, Parra pitches very well and Gagne throws a 1-2-3 inning. All things looked good, then the pile of dung known as Guillermo Mota came in to stink up Chase Field. Mota is such garbage, no wonder we only had to trade Estrada to get him. 5-5 is still a very nice road trip but man 6-4 would have been incredible.

Mota and Shouse have suddenely become liabilties. Definitely need a starter and a reliever before the deadline. I actually would have been all for Gagne pitching the 9th. What did he throw like 12 pictches in the 8th. Run him out there again in the 9th.

Yeah, I was really hoping he would pitch the 9th. I mean low # of pitches in the 8th and went 1-2-3. Gagne could have used a second inning for more confidence. The game could have turned out different and we might have won.

OK, I've taken a deep breath.

First, you can't pin this on Ned.

Second, you can't pitch Gagne two straight innings in his first trip off the DL, especially when he was shaky before...and at Nashville. This was probably a good note to end on for him.

Third, at some point this was bound to happen...as brutal as it was and 6 runs with no outs...it was the first real failure by Shouse & Torres and they didn't exactly step into an easy situation.

Fourth, Mota will be gone soon. This outing sealed his fate...the Brewers brass is not messing around this year, and a few of the guys at Nashville have pitched much better than he has when called upon. When you can no longer trust a guy with a 5 run lead, he just doesn't deserve a spot on the roster.

Fifth, 5-5 on the roadtrip is very solid. We've got no more 3 series roadies until September, we've got 10 at home until the break, we've got Sheets on the mound tomorrow and Lincecum on the hill against the Cubs tonight. This too shall pass...it was a stomach punch, but 30 hours from now hopefully we're discussing another 2 dongs from JJ and a three hit shutout from Sheeter. Movin' on...

SoCal Brew Crew Fan, that was pretty well said. It actually did calm me a bit. I don't blame Shouse and Torres to much. Shouse has done that before come in throw 1 pitch give up a big hit and then get pulled. As for Torres, he should have never had to pitch in that game and has been awesome can't blame him. It was all Mota just sucking as he has for about a month or more now.

I've had enough time to come back off the ledge. Yost managed the bullpen appropriately... the bullpen just blew it. It happens. 10 games at home now, lets get 7 of them and go into the break putting pressure on the cubs and cards. We can do this. I actually believe that.

I pin this on Ned because of strategy, not the pen use. Although, why 3 different relievers in a 5-0 game? No wonder everybody loses their effectiveness by Sept 1st.

Not walking Jackson (.308BA) to load the bases is crazy. Torres is a ground ball pitcher and the ground ball that was hit was an easy DP. And at DP depth, JJ may have forced Upton at home anyway. Who knows?

I believe Ned is flipping a coin when he has a decision to make. Not consistent, very random.

I don't think Mota was the main culprit. Branyan made a really dumb play to start the inning. If you can't get to the ball, you let the shortstop play it. Hardy throws out the catcher easy there. The infield hit to Weeks is one that Gantner used to make in his sleep.

The hit off of Shouse was the killer of the inning though. That changed the entire tenor of the game.

Yea, the brewers could be a .5 game out if they had just managed to pull off that very common 9-1 road trip. what a bunch of bums. The game today was horrible, and legitimately could be one we all look back on in september....but as long as the giants bullpen didnt get any crazy ideas from watching Mota and Co. today, and they hold on against the cubs, milwaukee will have picked up 2 games during a 10 game road trip. Not great and it could have been better, but ill take it.

How dare you blaspheme the Muscle like that.

All valid points from And That.

At supper tonight the S.O. and I pondered which was worse, this meltdown or Coco's last August 5 vs. the Phillies, and we agreed last year's was worse (and not only because we saw that one in person). Along those lines, my baseball heart goes out to all brewerfan posters who were in attendance today.

And I still want to see Meltdown Of The Afternoon the heck off the roster. I've been fortunate to not have experienced 'reliever rage' as often as I did in the 1990s and early 2000s...but once I turn on a reliever, it's over. Doug, Ned, Mike M, please note: once a reliever loses hawing's support, it's time for him to go.

Remember: the Brewers never panic like you do.
