Vicente Padilla a target per Rosenthal?

The Rangers will be a team to watch at the deadline, acting as both a possible buyer for bullpen help and seller of veteran talent. Right-hander Vicente Padilla, the subject of inquiries from the Mets, Yankees and Brewers, among other clubs, is perhaps their most intriguing commodity. The Rangers, however, only would move Padilla if they received quality young pitching in return.

I find it hard to believe that the Rangers would be thinking of giving up a 10 win pitcher with a 4.13 ERA when they have some sort of shot (albeit a longer one) in that they are currently only 6.5 games back. Just throwing it out there that Rosenthal is saying that the Brewers have kicked the tires on Padilla. Melvin looking at Texas Rangers? I have never heard of that!

I certainly wouldn't want Melvin to give up Gamel or LaPorta to the Rangers, but they are looking for young arms back. Why did they trade Voloquez then? Anyway, more fodder from the rumor mill. Padilla is too up and down for my tastes. They are trying to sell high now on Padilla if this is true.

The Brewers aren't a match for anyone who wants young arms, unless they're willing to take guys currently in West Virginia.

Padilla has a bloated contract, a classic example of how over-priced free agent pitching is - this would not make me happy.

I pray this doesn't happen, unless they can get him for Turnbow and Gagne. I think he would be no better than Bush, McClung or Villy and would be just another pitching head case the Brewers would have to deal with.

Given the asking price on other starters, Padilla's performance this year, and Melvin's Rangers history, I'm surprised this hasn't been tossed about more.

As long as Bush and McClung are pitching like the #4 and #5s they are, and not #6s or #10s, I don't see why it makes sense to trade for another one. A stud #1/#2 or even a solid #3 though? That's a different story.

Padilla would be a nice addition if the Crew lost an SP, or if someone falls apart. I'm sure Doug is kicking a lot of tires right now to gauge the market, as he'll need to know what to offer ASAP if a SP hits the market.

For $3M, Padilla is a nice SP. That's a lot of cash otherwise. We also know they like Gwynn and Zach J.

Padilla would have been a good pickup the year we got Suppan which is when he was a free agent. Trading for him wouldn't be a good idea unless it means we are trading Gwynn and Crabbe for him.
