Final: Arizona Rangers 8, Arizona Brewers 2

Arizona Box Score

Four lonely singles for the Crew Kids -- while never winners in past years, the Maryvale squad would at least provide some offense, tough to find so far; Brewer batters were able to hit one ball in the air -- they K'd 10 times, and hit 14 ground balls; the defense continues to really struggle, as the teams combined for eight errors (four apiece), but the Brewers added two passed balls, two wild pitches, and an HBP, while the Rangers' tots had none of those; SS Carlos George is on pace to be the greatest all-hit, no-glove force in baseball history -- here's hoping the kid gets all the tutoring he needs, because there seems to be some talent there...

Arizona Game Log

If you normally are not one to peruse a game log, I urge you to review this one in detail for the one-two minutes it will take you -- this particular log probably comes as close to giving you the sense of what these Arizona Rookie League games are like more often than not, especially early in the season...

Carlos (the great hitter and poor fielder) George is really an interesting case if one believes scouting reports. The scouting report posted on the 2008 draft forum suggests he is a good fielder with raw hitting skills. Someplace I read he didn't play high school ball this year because he was academically ineligible. So if he didn't play this year is the scouting report based on observations from the 2007 high school season? Did he play summer baseball? Which Brewer scout saw him play and when? The scout deserves a lot of credit for convincing the Brewers to take a chance and believing in the player. While its a long time before one can take an AZL player very seriously it appears that he is an early example of another poor fielder who can hit--there alot of those guys in the system.

Suspended in the second inning: Jupiter (Marlins) 1, Brevard County 0

Poor decision by the umpires and the Jupiter front office to begin play, as the Pocket Doppler isn't for major league parks only; the game will be picked up Wednesday afternoon at 4:00 Central before the regularly scheduled game; this game will likely be played to its nine-inning completion before a seven-inning nightcap; Josh Butler surrendered a leadoff home run followed by two singles, but he worked out of the jam with just the one run allowed; Charlie Fermaint stranded Jonathan Lucroy, who walked, and Taylor Green, who doubled; Fermaint, the left fielder, did have an outfield assist at second base, looks like he may have thrown out the batter who singled after the home run, who tried to stretch to a double...

Huntsville Press Release:

Smokies Survive Late Stars Charge to Win

Huntsville Falls Three Games Behind Division Leaders

Mitch Atkins worked seven solid innings and Mark Reed drove in three runs to push Tennessee past Huntsville 6-4 Tuesday night in the second of a four-game set at Smokies Park. The Smokies improved to 10-4 in the second half with their first win in seven tries against the Stars, who dipped to 7-7 in the half and 48-36 overall. The Stars had won the first six games by outscoring the Smokies 44-17.

Alcides Escobar began the eighth inning with a single leading the Smokies to remove Atkins from the game and replace him with left-hander Casey Lambert, who gave up a double to Mat Gamel that chased home Escobar to make it 5-4. The southpaw got Angel Salome to ground out, advancing Gamel to third before Matt LaPorta popped out to second against a drawn-in infield for the second out. Lambert was then taken out in favor of right-hander Jose Ceda, who struck out Cole Gillespie to end the frame.

Tennessee added an insurance run in the bottom of the inning on an infield single by Reed that plated Doug Deeds. The Smokies catcher came to the plate with runners at first and second and bounced a ground ball through the middle that a diving shortstop Escobar tried to glove and shovel to second base all in one motion. The ball got past second baseman Mike Bell, allowing Matt Matulia to get to third and Reed to advance to second. Omar Aguilar avoided further trouble by retiring Tyler Colvin and Sam Fuld to end the inning. Ceda then set down the Stars in turn in the ninth to record his fourth save.

Stars' starter Brae Wright, a winner in each of his last four turns on the road, blanked the Smokies through two before running into trouble in the third. Matulia and Reed singled to start the inning before Wright fielded Atkins' sacrifice bunt attempt and threw late to third base in an attempt to cut down Matulia. With the bases loaded, Fuld singled in the home team's first run and Nate Spears' scoring fly ball brought home Reed to give the Smokies a 2-1 lead.

Deeds reached with one out in the home fourth on a fielding error by Bell, moved to second base on an infield single by Josh Lansford and to third when Matulia was hit by a pitch. Reed followed with a two-run single to push the lead to 4-1 and a one-out, run-scoring hit by Fuld capped a three-run rally. Wright was lifted after six innings, giving up five runs, three earned, on eight hits, while striking out five and not issuing a walk for a second straight turn. He fell to 6-7 and suffered his first loss on the road since May 3.

Salome's two-out run-scoring hit pulled the Stars to within 5-2 in the sixth and Bell's two-out home run, his sixth of the season, in the seventh got the visitors to within 5-3.

The series continues Wednesday night with right-hander Donovan Hand taking the hill for Huntsville against Smokies' left-hander Donnie Veal. Coverage of the game begins at 6:00 pm central time and can be heard locally on SportsRadio 730 WUMP and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com and www.730ump.com.

Huntsville Box Score

Freddy Parejo's had a fine season as the 4th outfielder, but he's no Michael Brantley in the leadoff spot; Alcides Escobar 3-for-4 with two doubles, just out-doing Mat Gamel, 2-for-4 with two doubles of his own; Omar Aguilar still acclimating himself to AA...

Final: West Virginia 4, Greensboro (Marlins) 3

Looks like the good fans of Charleston will be getting a competitive second half, nice...

West Virginia Press Release:

POWER WIN FIFTH STRAIGHT

Charleston, WV - The West Virginia Power used a three-run fourth inning to erase an early deficit on Tuesday night at Appalachian Power Park and won their fifth straight game by defeating the Greensboro Grasshoppers 4-3 to sweep the two game series.

Bryan Petersen hit his second home run of the series with the bases empty and two out in the top of the first inning to give the Grasshoppers an early edge. In the third with two on and two out, Amaury Rivas struck out Matt Dominguez but a dropped third strike on a wild pitch allowed Dominguez to get to first and scored Ryan Curry.

The Power scored three times on three hits to take the lead in the fourth. Steffan Wilson began the inning with a base hit and scored on Eric Fryer's two-run shot, his sixth of the season. Two batters later, Curt Rindal doubled off the wall in left field, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Lee Haydel's sacrifice fly.

The Grasshoppers had two men on with one out in the fifth inning when Matt Dominguez hit what appeared to be a double play ball to short. Matt Cline threw to second for the first out but Ryan Curry's slide caused an errant throw from Eric Farris and allowed Hunter Mense to score.

West Virginia scored the eventual game winner in the eighth inning. Zelous Wheeler started it off with a base hit and moved to third on Wilson's single. Fryer walked to load the bases and with two outs, Rindal was hit by A.J. Battisto's 0-1 pitch to bring in the go-ahead run.

Reed Dickert (1-2) pitched three scoreless innings of one hit ball and fanned three to get the win. Corey Frerichs (6) pitched a scoreless ninth inning to record the save. Battisto (5-1) allowed a run on two hits in the eighth inning and was tagged with the loss.

The Power improved to 41-41 on the year and 9-4 in the second half with the win. They are now all by themselves in first place in the SAL North. The Grasshoppers fell to 43-40 on the year and 5-8 in the second half with the loss. Seven Power players hit safely, including Wilson and Caleb Gindl who paced the Power with two hits apiece. Gindl has hit safely in eight straight games. The five-game winning streak matches their longest of the year and they are back at .500 for the first time since April 5th.

The Power are off on Wednesday but will begin a four-game series against the Hagerstown Suns at Appalachian Power Park on Thursday night. Left hander Dan Merklinger (2-5, 7.46) will get the start for the Power. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM (6:05 Central).

West Virginia Box Score

Reliever Reed Dickert is unscored upon in his last five outings covering 10.2 innings -- just-turned 24, he needs to get back to high-A soon; Amaury Rivas walked four, but his 30 walks in 78 innings isn't bad; Caleb Gindl just continues to trend higher and higher and that is one of the more exciting developments of the past several weeks; Eric Fryer's 2008 OPS in West Virginia -- just over .900, last season at Helena -- .612...

Final: Nashville 5, Memphis (Cardinals) 1

Narron's Gem Leads Sounds Past Redbirds

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Left-hander Sam Narron worked a complete game to lead the Nashville Sounds to a 5-1 victory over the Memphis Redbirds on Tuesday night at AutoZone Park.

The Sounds (34-51) have won four of their six contests on the current road trip.

Narron's outing was the first nine-inning complete game by a Sounds pitcher in 2008 and resulted in his 11th overall win of the year, a total that ties for the minor league lead. He allowed one run on seven hits and walked two batters while fanning three in his 121-pitch outing that included 76 strikes.

The southpaw was within one strike of a shutout in the bottom of the ninth when Jarrett Hoffpauir ripped an RBI double off the left field wall to plate the lone Memphis run.

In addition to his exploits on the mound, Narron (5-3) helped his own cause with a 3-for-4 night at the plate.

Other highlights of the evening for the Sounds included the seventh triple play in the club's 31-year history and two-RBI efforts from Brendan Katin (3-for-4) and Ozzie Chavez.

For the second straight night, Nashville grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Hernan Iribarren led off with a walk, stole second, and later scored the contest's first run on Katin's two-out RBI single to center off Redbirds starter Jaime Garcia. The knock extended the outfielder's season-best hitting streak to six games.

The Sounds turned their first triple play in over three years in the bottom of the second inning. After Memphis put the first two runners on against Narron via a Josh Phelps walk and Nick Stavinoha single, D'Angelo Jimenez lined out to first baseman Vinny Rottino with the runners in motion. Rottino stepped on first and threw to shortstop Chris Woodward at second to complete the triple play, which was the seventh in the franchise's 31-year history.

AUDIO: Sounds Turn Three!

Nashville increased its lead to 3-0 in the top of the third with a pair of unearned runs stemming from consecutive throwing errors on Garcia as the hurler failed to handle a pair of sacrifice bunts. Narron singled to open the frame then moved to third as both Iribarren and Tony Gwynn laid down bunts that were mishandled by Garcia as the Sounds loaded the bases. Rottino grounded into a double play that allowed Narron to score before Katin came up with his second two-out run-scoring knock of the evening, a triple to right that plated Iribarren.

The Sounds tacked on a fourth run in the fourth when Mel Stocker led off with a double, advanced to third on a Garcia balk, and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Chavez.

Stocker and Chavez teamed up again in the eighth against Memphis reliever Matt Scherer to extend the Nashville lead to 5-0. Stocker ripped a one-out double, moved to third on a passed ball, and came plateward on Chavez's second sac fly of the night.

Garcia (4-4) took his third loss in four starts against the Sounds this season after he allowed four runs (two earned) on five hits in his five innings of work.

The teams continue the series with another 7:05 p.m. meeting on Wednesday night. Right-hander Mark DiFelice (3-0, 3.91) will make his first start since returning to the Sounds from Milwaukee. Memphis will counter with right-hander Clayton Mortensen (2-1, 3.42).

Nashville Box Score

Sam Narron was also 3-for-4 with a double at the plate, wow; defensive dandy Carlos Corporan guided Narron through his stellar start, but went 0-for-4 at the plate in his AAA debut; you'd think Narron could be an attractive "throw-in with value" in any July Milwaukee deal...

All nine Brewer batters with hits, all but Chris Dennis (who reached base three times) scored at least once, big Brock Kjeldgaard 3-for-6 with his third home run -- that experiment may work out after all; Mike Vass went deep, his second of the season; Jose Duran three hits, including a double; Michael Roberts drives in five; Cody Adams with three near-perfect scoreless innings behind Trey Watten, who rebounded from his first inning mess...

The big fella Katin with his 4th triple of the season - pretty impressive athleticism for a 6'1" 235lb dude. Supposedly has a great arm. Man, just a little more plate discipline and ol' "Gorman Deer" might be a top 10 prospect. Hard thing to teach, I know, but I'm not going to give up on him quite yet. Depending on how some teams look at him, he like Narron could be a "throw-in with value", especially to a team desperate for power willing to take a chance (KC? SF? SD?).

Have the Brewers ever had an Arizona squad that wasn't horrible? Anyone ever resembling a prospect ever come out of there?

Power alone in first place

By Nick Scala

Charleston Gazette Staff writer

Sure, it's early in the second half, and yes, there are still 59 games to play before the end of the season.

But look who's in first place in the South Atlantic League's Northern Division.

It's the West Virginia Power.

"There's a lot left here in the second half, but any time you get to first place you gotta be happy," Power manager Jeff Isom said after his club's season-high fifth straight win, a 4-3 decision over the Greensboro Grasshoppers Tuesday night at Appalachian Power Park.

The win, combined with Hagerstown getting swept in a doubleheader by Lakewood, puts the Power (9-4 in the second half) alone in first place for the first time this season, a full game ahead of the Suns (8-5).

The Power can increase that margin later this week. After a day off today, the Power takes on Hagerstown Thursday night for the start of a four-game Fourth of July weekend series.

"Wow, I didn't know we're in first place," said Power left fielder Eric Fryer, who hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning and made a key sliding catch down the left-field line in the top of the ninth. "If we keep doing what we've been doing the last couple of weeks, we'll be in some ballgames."

Now 19-9 in June and a winner in eight of its last 10 games, the Power evened its overall record at 41-41, reaching the .500 mark for the first time since April 5, just two games into the season.

Tied at 3-all with two outs in the bottom of the eighth, the Power pushed across what proved to be the winning run when first baseman Curt Rindal was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Corey Frerichs pitched a scoreless ninth for his sixth save, securing the win for Reed Dickert (1-2), who allowed just one hit in three shutout innings in relief of Power starter Amaury Rivas.

"[Dickert is] a guy that hasn't had a lot of opportunity, and he came in and really showed what he's capable of doing," Isom said. "He did a very good job for us, especially since we were a little thin in the bullpen tonight."

Greensboro reached Rivas for single runs in the first and third innings. Bryan Petersen's 14th home run, a solo shot, gave the Grasshoppers a 1-0 lead in the first, and they picked up a sloppy run in the third.

With two outs and runners on first and second, Rivas got Greensboro cleanup hitter Matt Dominguez to chase a low curveball in the dirt for strike three, but the ball got past Power catcher Uly Snijders. Snijders recovered the ball and fired to Rindal at first, but too late to nail Dominguez. In the meantime, Ryan Curry, who started the rally with a two-out double, kept running from second and beat Rindal's high return throw home to Snijders, giving Greensboro a 2-0 lead.

Fryer erased that lead when he reached down and golfed his sixth home run of the season in the bottom of the fourth, scoring Steffan Wilson, who led off the frame with an infield single. Fryer jumped on a 1-0 changeup from Greensboro starter Jay Voss and bounced it onto Spring Street beyond the left-field wall.

Later in the inning, the Power took its first lead when Rindal doubled, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Lee Haydel's sacrifice fly to center.

Greensboro got even by cashing in on more Power mistakes in the top of the fifth. Rivas walked the first two batters, Hunter Mense and Curry, and Mense came home when Power second baseman Eric Farris threw wildly to first while trying for an inning-ending double play.

After Dickert's solid three-inning relief job, the Power loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth on singles by Zelous Wheeler and Wilson and a walk to Fryer. After Snijders struck out for the third time in the game for the second out, Greensboro reliever A.J. Battisto (5-1) plunked Rindal on the hand, giving the Power its 4-3 lead.

Frerichs closed the deal, with a little help from Fryer. With one out and a runner on first, Fryer tracked Curry's drive down the left-field line and made a sliding grab for the second out. Frerichs then fanned Peterson for the final out.

"We just keep plugging along," Isom said. "We've been playing good baseball. That's all we want to do. At the end, if we're in first place, that's great."

POWER POINTS: Left-hander Dan Merklinger (2-5, 7.46 ERA) will start for the Power Thursday against Hagerstown. ... Caleb Gindl has hit safely in eight straight games and is 11-for-25 (.440) over the last six. ... Since the start of the second half, Fryer is hitting .413 (19-for-46). ... Tuesday's crowd was announced at 2,412.

Helena's newspaper's summary of this road game --

Brewers rally back to rout Missoula

By Helena Independent Record

Missoula got off to another big start on Tuesday night, but this time the Helena Brewers wouldn't let them hold on to it.

Helena (7-8) rallied back from a 5-0 deficit to nearly double-up the Osprey 15-8 one day after three Missoula pitchers combined for a no-hitter against the Brewers.

After winning 1-0 in a pitching show on Monday, Missoula (4-11) gave up 15 hits, including three home runs, and Helena reliever Cody Adams (1-2) walked away with the win Tuesday before the 2,018 in attendance.

Both teams combined for 26 hits, six home runs and 22 RBI, but Adams gave up just one of those hits while striking out four over three innings of play. His time to shine came right as the Brewers made their comeback.

After starting pitcher Trey Watten gave up two home runs, including a grand slam to Alberto Diaz, in the first inning, Helena quickly put their runs on the scoreboard. Watten didn't allow a run for three more innings, meanwhile the Brewers' batters struck quickly with a three-run homer by Michael Roberts in the second inning and another two-run blast by Brock Kjeldgaard in the third to tie the game up at 5-5.

Both teams scored a run in the fourth, but it was mostly the Brewers from then on.

Roberts hit a triple in the fifth to score two runs after Michael Vass' RBI ground out to give the Brewers a 9-6 lead.

They followed it up with a six-run seventh that put the game away. The Brewers batted through the order as Vass led off with a solo home run. John Delaney hit an RBI single, Erik Komatsu scored two on another and Vass would end up bringing in the final run on a grounder to center field.

Kjeldgaard went 3-for-6 with two runs and two RBI, meanwhile Vass led the Brewers with three runs and three RBI on a 2-for-5 performance. Jose Duran was 3-for-5, scoring two runs.
