Consecutive posts issue

I've seen moderators a couple of times talk about avoiding back to back posts, but I haven't seen that actually in an official rule. Is this something that should be made official? I think I even saw one mod call it bad netiquette, as if it's equivalent to 10 line paragraphs or heavy emoticon usage, but I've never encountered this preference on any other discussion forum.

I don't get the feeling that anyone is being disciplined for this, but if it's a guideline that we should be following, I think it only makes sense to officially list it as a guideline.

Yeah, it's more of a netiquette thing. Typically if it's a consistent issue, the staff has sent friendly PMs initially, usually it's not much of an issue for anyone beyond that. But I can tell you that there is already an update in the works for the rules of conduct that will mention some issues like consecutive posts and AOL-speak (ETC) more specifically, as you suggest.

In general, it can be a difficult issue to make objective rules for, as you could say a poster shouldn't post more than twice in a row, but what if a day went by and they're now updating? Sometimes even posting twice in a row is annoying clutter if neither post is of real substance or should clearly have been a single post. A rule would have to be a series of conditional statements, which makes it hard. The best approach for now, until a sound rule can be formulated, is to ask "does this add anything beyond my previous post and is it a new idea which couldn't be fluidly added via edit to the previous post?"

I don't think consecutive posts are ever the issue -- the IGT thread is littered with them, and threads like Robert's movies, often have back to back posts because he is the predominant poster -- or even Mass Haas's minor league stuff....

To me at least, the thing that has bothered me, is when people will comment on 2 or 3 different posts in a thread, in new separate posts -- when it could be all done in one post.

It's always been more of an efficiency or condensing issue for me.

I think the multiple posts has been much better of late. There were a couple posters who seemed to be chronic back to back to back posters and I haven't seen them lately. I honestly start ignoring(with or without the Yuku tools) posters who post back to back often.

Fan is short for fanatic.

I blame Wang.

That's really what we're talking about here. The IGT is a completely different medium for posting style, so it's generally exempt from a lot of the major rules (consecutive and one-line posts, etc).

I've found it odd that two of the most talked about issues in the past, being condescending and posting one or two word replies, are now almost solely done by 2-3 posters...and all are mods themselves. Do as I say...

Kindly point the staff to some examples, and I'm sure Brian would be happy to take a look at the problem.

There once was a moderator that had to be removed for bad moderating behavior, so I'm sure that if there really is a problem that it will be taken care of.

I'm not really sure I've seen much serial one or two word posting on here lately outside of the IGTs by a moderator or anyone else. I'd be especially interested to see examples of that because I just must be missing those threads. And I think the main thing with the 2-4 posts in a row thing is that people aren't comfortable quoting more than one person inside a single post, even if the points are very much related. Either they just respond as they read down a thread or just aren't comfortable enough with the Yuku controls to do it. We've been helping people with it and I think there's been a palpable decrease since we've started paying more attention to it over the past month or so.

Anything?

As Toby said, I don't really think one/two-word posting has been an issue over the last few months by anyone, moderator or otherwise at least as far as I can recall.

Are we now into to day three of information gathering, or is there just no information to gather? If problems "are now almost solely done by 2-3 posters...and all are mods themselves" I would think it shouldn't be this difficult to narrow down the examples if there are any.

Anything? Bueller?
