Bush joins the Odell Jones Club.

Bush's flirtation with the no-no today brought back a memory from my childhood. My dad was watching the Brewer game on television, and he asked me if I wanted to see a "possum with no hair"...at least that is what I heard. Turns out that he really asked me if I wanted to see a "Possible No-Hitter". The author of the gem was none other than Odell Jones.

I looked up the box score today, and was shocked to find that Jones actually took that no-hitter into the 9th. I thought he lost it much earlier than that.

Here's to you, Odell Jones, wherever you are.

I actually got Odell Jones' autograph after a game ~ 20 years ago. I'm not much of an autograph hound, but I managed to get Rob Deer's autograph on the same day.

(Really wish I knew what happened to that ball; I think it's packaged away somewhere at my parents' house.)

Was CCR's "Bathroom on the Right" playing so loudly you couldn't hear him? That's funny stuff.

Too bad for Bush today, but a fantastic outing. Of course the freaking ex-Brewer had to triple to break it up, and then the Jays erupted, but still -- got the win. Dave appeared to be fantastic today (at work, couldn't watch) -- I really wish I didn't miss this game. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif

EDIT: Hey check out the Yahoo sports link for the recap article on the game today:

"Brew loses no-hit bid, win"

*rolls eyes* Come on folks. That's just poor, poor writing in general.

Given how Dillard and Riske did, perhaps Yost should have let Bush pitch the 9th anyway...

You wouldn't be one of those who criticizes Yost for leaving Bush in too long would you? Seems Ned can't win. Maybe he should get a crystal ball so he can see into the future.

Just wanted to add this nice Odell Jones summary from another thread to this one (hope mls4 doesn't mind):

May 28, 1988: 35-year-old journeyman Odell Jones makes his first start since 1981, filling in for an injured Teddy Higuera. Athough Jones had pitched well so far in only 7 relief appearances that season, and he'd gotten the win 5 days earlier in a 5-inning relief outing replacing Higuera in the 2nd inning, he had spent the whole year prior in the minor leagues, and he had basically bounced back and forth between the minors and the majors his whole career. All that to say, this was a much less likely story even than Dave Bush... but Jones set down the first 22 Indians in order before a walk to Mel Hall ruined the perfect game bid. Noticeably tiring as he reached the 90-pitch mark (he'd only thrown 54 pitches his previous game), but hanging on to the 2-run lead, he retired the final 2 batters of the 8th, and struck out the first batter of the 9th before pinch-hitter Ron Washington dropped a soft opposite-field liner into shallow right. Dan Plesac then came in the game and after an infield single, retired the final two hitters to preserve the 2-hit shutout.

This is one of the few games I remember like it was just the other day. Odell Jones may have had a non-descript career, but he has a place in my book of Brewer history.
