Power Use Four Run Fifth to Beat Kannapolis

 

Caleb Gindl, Steffan Wilson, Eric Fryer and Curt Rindal all smacked RBI doubles in the fifth inning of Thursday night's game at FieldCrest Cannon Stadium, as the West Virginia Power used the four run frame to pull away from the Intimidators and opened up the second half of the season with a 10-2 victory.

West Virginia scored first when Eric Farris came across on a wild pitch in the top of the first inning. Kannapolis answered quickly with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first to take their only lead of the game. Logan Johnson singled in a run to tie it up and Christian Marrero's Sacrifice Fly brought in Jim Gallagher to make it 2-1.

West Virginia scored three times in the third to take the lead. Wilson and Fryer began the inning on back-to-back base hits. Rindal's single to left field scored Wilson. Jim Gallagher's errant throw from left allowed Fryer to score and put Rindal on third base. Rindal scored later in the inning on Matt Cline's sacrifice fly. Zelous Wheeler began the four run fifth with a base hit before Gindl, Wilson and Fryer hit three consecutive RBI doubles. Rindal's run scoring double completed the big inning. The Power added a pair of insurance runs in the ninth. Rindal singled in his third run of the game and Hector Santiago's balk brought in Anderson Delarosa.

Evan Anundsen (6-4) was strong through five innings, allowing just a pair of runs on six hits to get the victory. Levi Maxwell (6-2) was tagged with the loss after surrendering seven runs on nine hits in four innings of work. Roque Mercedes and Pedro Lambertus combined to toss four scoreless innings of relief.

The Power improved to 33-37 on the year and 1-0 in the second half with the win, while the Intimidators fell to 31-40 on the year and 0-1 in the second half with the loss. Seven Power players hit safely and four Power players turned in multi-hit games. Rindal and Gindl paced the Power with three hits a piece. Zelous Wheeler walked and singled, extending his on base streak to 18 games. West Virginia has won their last four games.

The Power will continue the five game series against the Kannapolis Intimidators at FieldCrest Cannon Stadium in Kannapolis, North Carolina on Friday night. Left hander Mike Ramlow (2-2, 2.18) will get the start for the Power and the Intimidators will counter with right hander Miguel Socolovich (0-3, 6.65). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.

Sounds Snap Skid With 6-3 Win Over 'Hawks

http://www.nashvillesounds.com/images/news/gardner.jpg NASHVILLE - The Nashville Sounds snapped a three-game skid by pounding out 13 hits in a 6-3 victory over the Oklahoma RedHawks on Thursday evening at Greer Stadium.

 

The victory was the first for the Sounds in 11 contests against the RedHawks in 2008.

 

Richie Gardner (6-2) worked a season-high seven innings for Nashville to notch his sixth win in his last 10 outings. The right-hander lowered his ERA to 3.80 on the year after allowing one run on four hits and striking out a season-best seven batters in the outing.

 

Brad Nelson homered and drove in a team-high three runs as part of a 3-for-3 evening. Mel Stocker continued his recent hot hitting with a 3-for-5 effort, his third multiple-hit game in his last five, and Adam Heether recorded a season-best three hits for Nashville.

 

Oklahoma took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning against Sounds starter Derrick Turnbow. After the right-hander fanned Jason Ellison to open the contest, the 'Hawks loaded the bags on a pair of walk sandwiched around a Nelson Cruz single. John Mayberry lifted a sacrifice fly to left to plate Ryan Roberts with the game's first run. During the next at-bat, Turnbow uncorked his second wild pitch of the frame, which allowed Cruz to scamper home from third.

 

The Sounds got a run back in unearned fashion in the home half of the frame to halve the lead. Stocker led off with a bunt single and advanced to second on a throwing error by catcher Kevin Richardson. After a Tony Gwynn sacrifice bunt, Nelson lifted a sacrifice fly to right, the slugger's team-leading 41st RBI of the year.

 

Nashville took a 3-2 in the third against RedHawks starter Kameron Loe. Adam Heether led off with a single to left, moved to second on a Stocker single, and later came home on a Callix Crabbe RBI groundout. Nelson drove in his second run of the night and put the Sounds in front when he followed with an opposite-field, two-out single to left to score Stocker.

 

The RedHawks tied it in the fifth when Cruz drew a one-out walk, stole second, and scored on John Mayberry's two-out RBI double to left off Gardner.

 

Nelson continued his solid evening in the bottom of the fifth when he belted a two-out solo homer to center off RedHawks reliever Brian Gordon to push the Sounds back in front. The slugger's tenth roundtripper of the year made it a 4-3 game.

 

Laynce Nix got into the longball act an inning later. He led off the sixth frame with his tenth blast of the year, a solo shot off Gordon.

 

The Sounds added another two-out run in the seventh to stretch the lead to 6-3. Gwynn walked to open the frame before being thrown out at the plate while attempting to score from first on a Nelson single to center. Rottino followed with an RBI double to the right-center gap.

 

Sounds closer Luis Pena followed Gardner's stellar effort with a scoreless ninth to notch his 11th save of the year.

 

Gordon (0-1) took his first loss of the year for Oklahoma after allowing two runs on three hits over his two relief innings.

 

The teams wrap up the series with a 7 p.m. finale on Friday evening at Greer. Left-hander Sam Narron (3-2, 4.62) will make the start for the Sounds to face Oklahoma right-hander Luis Mendoza (2-2, 5.04).

The H-Crew's lineup will look significantly different when they get Brett Lawrie in the fold, assuming that is where he debuts. I actually like their pitching staff, and the lineup really is only a legitimate big bat away from allowing everything else to click.

 

Schafer and Komatsu could also be a big help.

Diamond Jaxx Take 8-5 Lead in Season Series

Greg Halman's home run in the 11th inning carried West Tenn to a 4-3 win over Huntsville Thursday night in the third game of a six-game set at Joe Davis Stadium. The Diamond Jaxx have won two of the first three to improve to 43-30 overall, while the Stars dropped to 42-31 overall. Huntsville fell to 1-4 in extra innings games, while the Jaxx have won all six of theirs.

 

Robert Hinton threw a scoreless tenth inning for the Stars and was aided by a spectacular start to an inning-ending double play by shortstop Alcides Escobar. However, Halman belted a 3-1 pitch high over the wall in left-center field for his first double-A hit to lead off the 11th and put the visitors ahead. Marwin Vega then retired the Stars in turn in the home half of the inning to protect the win and earn his second save. Hinton has been scored on in eight of his last 11 outings and suffered the loss after pitching in back-to-back games for the first time this season.

 

Escobar tied the game at three with a looping single to right field with two outs in the seventh. Shawn Kelly then set down the next four hitters before Mumba Rivera struck out the side in the ninth and fanned Angel Salome to end the tenth after a two-out single by Mat Gamel. Rivera earned his fifth win of the season and second over the Stars.

 

Salome's leadoff home run in the second inning off Craig James, making his first career start after 182 relief outings after scheduled starter Justin Thomas was injured shortly before the start of the game, staked the Stars to a 1-0 lead. West Tenn tallied twice in the third against David Welch on a run-scoring ground out by Mark Kiger and a two-out RBI hit by Mike Wilson, who has knocked in a run in all three games in the series. Adam Moore's leadoff long ball in the fourth pushed the visitors lead to 3-1. Welch lasted five frames, giving up three runs on four hits, while walking three and striking out five.

 

Mike Bell scored on a Michael Brantley groundout in the fifth to trim the lead to 3-2 and James was lifted after five frames, giving up two runs on six hits. Roman Martinez retired the side in order in the sixth and was taken out with a runner at first and two down in the sixth. He was charged with the tying run when Freddy Parejo scored on the Escobar hit.

 

The series continues Thursday night with Hunsville left-hander Brae Wright taking the hill against West Tenn right-hander Travis Chick. Stars falter in 11th

West Tenn homer spoils strong effort by pen in 4-3 loss

For something that started so promising for the Huntsville Stars' bullpen Thursday night, it certainly didn't have a storybook ending.

 

After Josh Wehpapah, Juan Sandoval and Robert Hinton had thrown five scoreless innings, Hinton gave up a long home run to Greg Halman to lead off the 11th inning that propelled West Tenn to a 4-3 win over Huntsville in front of 3,047 fans at Joe Davis Stadium.

 

Halman was playing in his first Double-A game of the season for the Diamond Jaxx, and after looking pretty average in his first few at-bats, he connected on a no-doubt homer that sent the Stars to their second loss in three games to West Tenn to start the second half of the season.

 

The final blast erased two brilliant defensive plays that Huntsville made during the comeback and subsequent late innings.

 

First of all, trailing 3-2 in the sixth, Huntsville's Wehpapah loaded the bases with one out before getting a strikeout.

 

Then, Jeffrey Dominguez rolled a slow grounder to shortstop. Alcides Escobar charged and threw quickly to get the speedy Dominguez.

 

That's when regular right fielder Matt LaPorta made a great lunging play to his right, going to the ground to catch a short-hopper, saving two runs.

 

On that play, it was obvious that LaPorta's sore back, which he injured Wednesday night running into the wall to make a great catch, was OK.

 

An inning later, the Stars tied up the game when Michael Brantley's single moved Freddy Parejo to third, and Escobar's bloop single knocked him in to tie the game at 3-3.

 

Then, Escobar made his own highlight-reel play in the ninth. After Hinton put a runner on with one out, Jon Nelson hit a slow roller between short and third that looked like it was going through. Instead, Escobar gloved it and briskly threw to second to start a double play.

 

It was to no avail. Huntsville's bats could not get going late as the Stars couldn't muster any offense during the late innings, and Halman's home run proved the difference.

 

Huntsville (1-2) got going in the second when catcher Angel Salome led off the inning with a home run. The 1-0 lead held to the third when West Tenn (2-1) put two on the board, and the Jaxx added another run in the fourth when catcher Adam Moore belted a solo home run.

 

The Stars fought back with single runs in the fifth and seventh, but that was all. Shawn Kelly, Mumba Rivera and Marwin Vega shut down Huntsville the rest of the way to let West Tenn get the big hit in the 10th.

 

The two teams meet at 7:00 PM today in the fourth game of a six-game set.

Brewers fall to Voyagers 6-5

The Helena Brewers made one final stand Thursday night, but the home team just couldn't hold up.

 

Helena scored three runs and loaded the bases three times in the ninth inning, but Cutter Dykstra and Mike Vass went down swinging as the Brewers (0-3) dropped their third straight in their opening series with the Great Falls Voyagers 6-5.

 

The Brewers needed the comeback after Mark Willinsky gave up a two-run homer in the eighth to Nick Mahin of Great Falls (3-0). The ball soared over the center field wall to give Great Falls a 3-2 lead.

 

One inning later, Mahin crushed a triple off the left field wall to bring in Kenny Williams before scoring the winning run himself on a wild pitch by Brewers closer Jorge Crespo.

 

Mahin harassed Helena's pitchers all game, finishing 2-for-3 with a walk.

 

The Brewers were down, but not out, as they headed into the bottom of the ninth.

 

Chris Dennis walked, Brock Kjeldgaard singled to left field and Corey Kemp lined another one to the right to load the bases and bring the Brewers dugout, and the faithful fans left from the 968 that made up the crowd, to their feet.

 

Suddenly, the Brewers were trusting in two players who weren't even scheduled to bat that night.

 

Derrick Alfonso came in as catcher after Brett Whiteside pulled up lame heading into second in the fifth inning. Meanwhile, Logan Schafer took to the field in the sixth after Edgar Trejo apparently rolled his ankle chasing down a runner at third.

 

Neither one seemed nervous when they headed to the plate. Alfonso brought in Dennis with a single to right before Schafer hit a fielder's choice to first base, bringing the score to 6-4.

 

The Voyagers replaced pitcher Drew O'Neil with Daniel Albritton, but the closer couldn't stop the momentum. At least not yet.

 

John Delaney walked and Michael Marseco, the smallest Brewer on the field at just 5-foot-9, 145 pounds, played as big as anyone else, hitting a flair to right field that allowed Kemp to score.

 

With one out and the bases loaded, however, Albritton turned up the heat.

 

He had an 0-2 count on Dykstra before the Brewer fought back to make it 3-2. On his final swing, Dykstra pulled just under a fastball for the second out.

 

Vass couldn't top Great Falls' closer either, swinging on high heat on a 2-2 pitch to end the game.

 

"That showed me something, I was very proud of that comeback and I hope they are as well," said Brewers manager Rene Gonzales. "But the things that got us in trouble are just the fundamental stuff. We just need to tighten up on that.

 

"I think that will come the more we play with each other and the more we get to know each other."

 

Dykstra finished 2-for-5 to lead the Brewers at the plate.

 

Albritton finished with the save while Joshua Billeaud (1-0) pitched for the win.

 

Willinsky ended up with the loss, though he and starter Michael Bowman both had impressive moments through the first seven innings.

 

Bowman gave up just one run on three hits, striking out five and walking two in the first four innings. Willinsky, who came in and immediately sent three away in the fifth, went 3 1/3 innings, giving up three hits and striking out three.

 

Willinsky's first three outs went down in just eight pitches, all of them over the plate.

 

Trejo and Marseco both scored in the fifth to give the Brewers a 2-1 lead.

 

Helena remains at home as they host the Missoula Osprey for a three-game series before hitting the road.

 

Trey Watten is scheduled to start for the Brewers while Miles Reagan will pitch for the Osprey. The first pitch is expected at 7:05 PM (8:05 Central).

In the top of the 9th, Logan Schafer, making his pro debut, went in defensively for Edgar Trejo after Trejo's foot / ankle injury -- oddity here, as Schafer throws left-handed, so he'll always remember that; if Trejo can't play tonight, the Brewers really need 6th rounder Jose Duran to make his debut, they have no other infielders ready; also, at that point in the 9th with two outs, there was an arbitrary switch between second baseman John Delaney and center fielder Cutter Dykstra after a play at second base -- you wonder if Delaney got dinged and the Brewers had no choice there with no subs available, we'll see if the audio provides a hint; Great Falls was 6-for-6 stealing bases (one pickoff) vs. the staff and catchers Brett Whiteside and Derrick Alfonso...

Listen to Edgar Trejo's injury situation from the game last night -- does not sound good for the very promising youngster, unfortunately. He went down in a heap while he was executing a rundown play, and was carried off the field by trainers from both squads. The trainers were trying to stretch his leg, and were focused on his left knee. Voice of the H-Crew Steve Wendt then explains that Jose Duran has not quite cleared his physical. The box score was incorrect. Logan Schafer was inserted in center field, John Delaney played third base, and Cutter Dykstra played second. Delaney's fine, and no left-handed third baseman. But the focus is on Edgar Trejo at this point.
