Power executives making plans for 2009 All-Star Game

by Jacob Messer

Charleston Daily Mail sportswriter

Although the 2009 South Atlantic League All-Star Game still is a year away, West Virginia Power front-office executives already are making preparations for hosting it.

"It's still early in the process," Power General Manager Ryan Gates said. "We will probably get the ball rolling seriously in the next two months."

Gates said he and his colleagues want to design and unveil a 2009 SAL All-Star Game logo before the Power plays its season finale Sept. 1.

"We want to be able to generate some excitement and maybe tie that into some 2009 season ticket packages," Gates said.

Palisades Baseball Executive Vice President Andy Milovich, Gates and other Power officials will travel to North Carolina this week for the 2008 SAL All-Star Game at the Greensboro Grasshoppers' NewBridge Bank Park.

The three-day all-star break will begin Monday and end Wednesday. The league's 49th annual all-star game is scheduled for Tuesday at 7:00 Pm (6:00 Central).

"We will take some ideas away from there to get the ball really moving," Gates said.

Monthly meetings will begin soon, Gates said. Biweekly meetings will occur as the game gets closer, he said.

"Personally, I would like to keep it to as few meetings as possible," Gates said. "Those meetings need to be, 'Are we getting X, Y and Z done? Are we on our way?' I'm not big on sitting there and talking about it. Let's do it. Let's get it done.

"We will pretty much have a couple of people on staff who will oversee it with one point person," he added.

Gates said he expects to receive assistance from the Charleston Convention & Visitors Bureau and its Sports Committee.

"We will actively enlist the city and some volunteers," Gates said, "but to what extent, I can't say. We just aren't at that point yet."

Gates didn't offer any financial estimates in regard to potential costs. He said the Power is searching for sponsors to help offset expenses.

"With any event, you would like to be able to turn it into a moneymaker," Gates said. "But we pretty much have been told the (SAL) All-Star Game isn't about making money because a lot of teams don't. It's about showing the other teams in the league what kind of operation you put together and what kind of ballpark you have."

Gates outlined the club's preliminary plans for the 2009 SAL All-Star Game this week during an interview inside the Appalachian Power Park press box.

"First off, we're excited to showcase the ballpark here," Gates said of Appalachian Power Park, a $23 million facility that opened in 2005. "We consider it a gem.

"We also want to showcase Charleston and West Virginia as a whole," he added. "We want to do some things to celebrate the area, the region and the state."

Although the all-star break is a three-day stretch, most of the events occur on the first two days. The third day is a travel day.

League officials and team members will start arriving Sunday, and the Power will have a hospitality room waiting for them.

Gates said the franchise will utilize Power Alley Grill, a restaurant inside the East End stadium, and The Clubhouse, a meeting/catering room inside the Morris Street office building.

Participants likely will have three entertainment options on Monday morning and afternoon.

One is a golf outing - "the norm," as Gates put it.

Another is whitewater rafting.

"What better way to showcase the beautiful state," Gates said.

The other option is a John Amos Power Plant tour.

"They can learn how energy is created from start to finish," Gates said.

"We want to offer something educational and something different," Milovich added.

There likely will be a concert or another event at Tri-State Race Track and Gaming Center on Monday night.

"We have talked about having something over at the casino if it is built at that point," he said.

The Power will host the SAL Hall of Fame luncheon at the Clay Center on Tuesday morning. Next year's class will be inducted at that function.

"It's an opportunity to showcase that beautiful building across the street from us," Gates said.

There will be a skills competition, home run derby and autograph session before the SAL All-Star Game on Tuesday night.

A post-game fireworks display and reception at Power Alley Grill will end the activities.

"We're excited about it," Gates said.

The low Class A circuit's owners and directors awarded the 2009 SAL All-Star Game to Appalachian Power Park in a unanimous vote last year at their annual summer meeting during the all-star break.

West Virginia ran unopposed for the 2009 game, but only because Greenville, S.C., chose to run unopposed for the 2010 game at West End Field.

The Charleston franchise has hosted an SAL All-Star Game only one other time in its 21 years in the league.

That was in 1989, when the Northern Division defeated the Southern Division, 14-4, at Watt Powell Park in front of a crowd of 7,318 - the third-largest crowd in SAL All-Star Game history (dating to 1960).

Sounds Conclude Trip With Doubleheader Split

DES MOINES - The Nashville Sounds closed out their road trip by splitting a doubleheader against the first-place Iowa Cubs on Monday afternoon at Principal Park.

The Sounds snapped an eight-game losing streak by posting a 3-1 victory over the Cubs in the opener before Iowa plated six late runs in the second contest to hang an 8-4 defeat on Nashville.

Nashville (28-43) finished just 1-8 on their nine-game trip, including dropping four of five to the front-running Cubs.

Sounds catcher Vinny Rottino singled in the first game to extend his hitting streak to 24 games, matching the longest in the Pacific Coast League this season, then went 0-for-2 in the nightcap to bring it to a close. Rottino batted an impressive .368 (32-for-87) during the streak, which dated back to May 20.

Outfielder Mel Stocker swung the most productive bat for the Sounds on Monday, batting from the leadoff spot in both contests and finishing 4-for-7 with three runs scored.

In the day's opener, Nashville took a 3-0 lead in the top of the third inning with a rally against Iowa starter Randy Wells. With one out, Stocker singled then Tony Gwynn and Callix Crabbe drew consecutive walks to load the bases. Sounds cleanup hitter Brad Nelson followed with a two-run single to right to put the visitors on the board. Rottino plated the frame's third run with a sacrifice fly.

Iowa scratched across an unearned run in the fifth when former Sound Luis Figueroa reached on a fielding error by Crabbe at second base, was sacrificed to second, moved to third on an Andres Torres bunt single, and scored on a Felix Pie sacrifice fly.

Lindsay Gulin (3-4) made the start for the Sounds and earned the victory after he allowed one unearned run on three hits in six frames. It was the veteran southpaw's third quality start of the year.

Luis Pena closed out the win with a 1-2-3 seventh to notch his tenth save for Nashville.

Wells (6-2) took the loss despite turning in a quality start for the I-Cubs. He allowed three runs on six hits over six frames of action.

Clean inning for Luis Pena to save it -- the Brewers are having him throw about every other day regardless of save or non-save situation...

Nashville Game One Game Log

In the nightcap, Iowa sent 12 men to the plate during a six-run sixth against three members of the Nashville bullpen to net an 8-4 victory.

The Sounds took an early 1-0 lead after loading the bases with one out in the top of the first inning against Cubs starter Gregory Reinhard. Stocker scored from third on a Laynce Nix popout to shallow left field. Crabbe was thrown out a home attempting to score from second on the bizarre play.

Iowa grabbed a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the frame against spot starter Zach Jackson. Torres opened the game with a walk then scored the tying run from first when Pie followed with an RBI double to center. After moving to third on a flyout, Pie plated the second Cubs run of the frame following a Rottino passed ball.

Nashville jumped back in front in the see-saw contest with a pair of runs in the third. Jackson, Stocker, and Gwynn opened the frame with three consecutive singles, the third of which tied the score at 2-2. Crabbe followed with a go-ahead sacrifice fly to right.

The Cubs were the final team to put runs on the board, plating six runs in the bottom of the sixth as they sent 12 men to the plate against the Nashville bullpen to take an 8-3 lead.

Pie made it a 3-3 game when he led off with his fourth home run of the year, a solo shot to right off Sounds reliever Mitch Stetter. Jason Dubois drew a walk and, after Stetter was replaced by Jason Shiell, Casey McGehee walked and Bobby Scales singled to load the bases with only one out.

Figueroa followed with a potential double play grounder but Crabbe's throw to shortstop Chris Woodward at second was off the mark, allowing a pair of runs to score to give the Cubs a two-run lead. Three batters later, Torres reached on a two-out RBI infield single to make it a 6-3 game before Pie concluded the onslaught against Shiell with a two-run single to right.

The Sounds didn't go down without a fight in the seventh, however. Nix led off with a triple to center and later scored on a Woodward single to pull the visitors within 8-4. Nashville put runners on first and second before Jim Brower induced a game-ending double play grounder from pinch-hitter Brendan Katin.

Brower (2-0) was the beneficiary of the late Cubs outburst and picked up the win after allowing one run on three hits over his two frames.

Stetter (0-3) took the loss after being charged with two runs in his 1 1/3 innings of work.

Jackson turned in a solid spot start for the Sounds, allowing two runs on one hit over four innings of work.

The Sounds return to Music City on Tuesday to begin an eight-game homestand that features visits by Oklahoma and Memphis.

Rehabbing right-hander David Riske - who has been on the Milwaukee Brewers' disabled list since May 15 with a hyper-extended right elbow - is slated to start Tuesday's 7 p.m. series opener for the Sounds. He is expected to throw one inning before turning things over to right-hander Ben Howard (2-2, 3.92). The RedHawks will counter with right-hander Steve Rowe (2-2, 4.72).

Nashville Game Two Box Score

Tough twinbill for Callix Crabbe defensively; where was catcher J.R. Hopf today for the nightcap? Tough way for Vinny Rottino to lose the hitting streak, he walked in a seven-inning game; 31-year-old Jason Shiell has had a rough June...

Darren Ford with his 34th and 35th stolen base of the year in the first inning, manufacturing a run pretty much by himself. How good would he be if he had a respectable OBP?

David Price who's pitching for Vero Beach has 3 BB vs 23 SO in 4 starts... and struck out the side in the first.

edit. I should add just in case it's not common knowledge that Price was first pick in last year's draft and is returning from an elbow injury.

edit2. Horrible bottom of the 2nd for BC, that's a tough hole to climb out of against a picher like Price.

Vero Beach Bottom 2nd

  • John Matulia singles on a ground ball to center fielder Darren Ford.
  • Ryan Royster flies into a force out, right fielder Chuck Caufield to second baseman Yohannis Perez to shortstop Brent Brewer. John Matulia out at 2nd. Ryan Royster to 1st.
  • Joey Callender reaches on force attempt, throwing error by second baseman Yohannis Perez. Ryan Royster to 2nd.
  • Neil Walton singles on a fly ball to right fielder Chuck Caufield. Ryan Royster scores. Joey Callender to 2nd.
  • Desmond Jennings doubles (3) on a ground ball to left fielder Anderson De La Rosa. Joey Callender scores. Neil Walton to 3rd.
  • Rocco Baldelli singles on a ground ball to center fielder Darren Ford. Neil Walton scores. Desmond Jennings scores.
  • Cesar Suarez grounds into a force out, third baseman Taylor Green to second baseman Yohannis Perez. Rocco Baldelli out at 2nd. Cesar Suarez advances to 2nd, on throwing error by second baseman Yohannis Perez.
  • With Nevin Ashley batting, Cesar Suarez caught stealing 3rd base, catcher Martin Maldonado to third baseman Taylor Green.

Vero Beach Rays: Price shines again, Baldelli begins rehab

By Bill Whitehead, TCPalm.com

VERO BEACH - Vero Beach Devil Rays pitcher David Price wowed them in his professional debut and outdueled New York Met hurler Pedro Martinez in his next start.

If Monday night's 7-2 win over Brevard County is any indication, he might be heading out of Vero Beach and climbing one step closer to the Majors.

As he has done during his brief time in the Florida State League, the former Vanderbilt University star was strong again Monday night, tossing five solid innings and fanning the side twice in Vero Beach's game against Brevard County.

"You really want to use your defense, but my pitch-count (90) got up there. I'm happy with it, though, and we're winning," said Price after coming out as the pitcher of record with a 4-1 lead.

Price (3-0) missed his outing last Thursday due to a rainout, then had to wait through the FSL All-Star weekend. Monday's start was his fifth in the High A league.

The No. 1 overall pick in the First-Year Player Draft last season, Price gave up a run on a looping single by Chuckie Caufield in the first inning, but struck out the side, with a pair of Manatees looking.

He worked out of jam in the second when Vero Beach catcher Nevin Ashley picked off Brent Brewer at first base to the end the inning with runners on first and second.

In the third, he gave up a leadoff triple to Darren Ford, but then struck out Yohannis Perez, Taylor Green and Caufield to leave Ford stranded at third to keep the Devil Rays up 4-1.

In all, he has thrown 28.1 innings in his five starts, allowing 23 hits and four earned runs - a 1.27 E.R.A. He has struck out 30 and walked five.

If his performance has been good enough to earn him a promotion, it would likely be to the Double-A Montgomery Biscuits of the Southern League.

Asked if he knew what his future pitching plans were, Price replied, "I have no idea. No one's said a thing."

Former Tampa Bay center fielder Rocco Baldelli, rehabbing from chronic fatigue due to a mitochondrial abnormality, debuted by slapping a two-run single in the second inning and finished 1-for-3 and drove in two runs.

"It always feels good to get out there (and be productive)," said Baldelli. "To come out here, get on base and get in the flow of the game, it's just a good way to start off."

He is slated to play on Wednesday and Friday this week, all as a designated hitter.

The 26-year-old last appeared against Texas on May 15, 2007. He suffered a hamstring injury in the game, sidelining him for the rest of the season.

This year he was diagnosed with a mitochondrial disorder, a malady that has resulted in chronic fatigue. The Rays placed him on the 60-day Disabled List after refusing to pick up his $6 million option on April 1.

"I've dealt with multiple surgeries and had a lot of injuries during my career," Baldelli said, "but I don't think I've had anything to compare to what I've been dealing with for the last year and a half.

"I was probably dealing with it longer than that and just didn't know it."

Brevard County Box Score

Darren Ford 3-for-4 with two triples -- a stellar second half would be nice; Alex Periard goes seven innings, gets 12 ground ball outs, quality start, he's just no David Price, for which he can't be faulted; two errors apiece for the middle infield combo of Brewer and Perez; this series actually counts towards the first-half standings...

Sounds end losing streak but hard schedule awaits

By MAURICE PATTON

Tennessean Staff Writer

After ending a couple of streaks Monday, the Sounds hope to end yet another one today at Greer Stadium.

The Sounds split a doubleheader Monday at Iowa, winning the first seven-inning game 3-1 to stop an eight-game skid, before losing the second seven-inning game 8-4.

Next up for the Sounds: an eight-game homestand, starting with four games against Oklahoma. Against the RedHawks this season, the Sounds have lost all eight of their games, including four on the most recent road trip.

Prior to Monday's victory, the Sounds had not won since defeating Albuquerque 6-1 on June 7. The eight straight losses were a season-high and the second-most in the PCL this season. Tucson lost 10 in a row from April 4-13.

The 1987 Sounds set a franchise record with 12 straight losses.

Catcher Vinny Rottino went 1-for-3 in the win to extend his hitting streak to 24 games - matching an earlier streak by Iowa's Andres Torres for longest in the PCL this season - before going hitless in two at-bats in the loss.

Rottino wound up two games short of the 26-game streak that Sounds outfielder Adam Hyzdu had in 2001.

David Riske will start today for the Sounds. The Milwaukee Brewers reliever, who has been on the disabled list with an injured shoulder, is scheduled to pitch one inning ahead of regularly scheduled starter Ben Howard.

Riske will be on the same schedule for Thursday's game against Oklahoma.

Meanwhile, Nashville will look to revive its offense. The Sounds' .224 batting average at Greer is the lowest home average in the 16-team PCL.
