4/15/87 Classic: Brewers @ Orioles, Nieves no-hitter

1992casey

This may explain why Yount dives for the last catch, even though he may not have had to.

Yount has commented on that play several times over the past 20 years. He admits that he didn't need to dive. According to Yount, he dove because it gave him the best chance to catch the ball cleanly. The ball was moving away from him, and he was afraid that it could skip off the end of his glove.

One other thing I've noticed. Schroeder's mitt appears to have orange spray paint on it to highlight it. I remember seeing this back in the day but have not for a long, long time. What's up with that? Has lighting just gotten better for night games or what?

People are always talking about how they loved Hegan and Pashke. I never could stand them.....boring. Pashke had limited knowledge of baseball.
Because they're concentrating on describing the action at hand, baseball knowledge or lack thereof isn't exposed. These guys aren't trying to be the 'stars' of the broadcast. I like that.

If we were listening to an interview, 'baseball knowledge' would be much more on the forefront.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

I like how Paschke/Heagan didnt mention the ongoing no-no at all during the broadcast, with Daron, since he always used to say how he never believed in superstition, would probably be blabbing about it every two minutes...

That was a lot of fun to watch. I didn't get to see the whole thing, but it was just nice to see some baseball while re-living a memory.

And that Orioles lineup was loaded, so it wasn't a cheapie.

Those gloves were actually made that way, and were popular in the 80s and early 90s. I believe Lance Parrish was one of the first, regular and bigger named catchers that wore one of these gloves to help popularize them. I remember a few catchers in little league and high school wearing these as well.

Catchers always try to do different things. Remember when Charlie O'Brien would have the tools of ignorance in the team's secondary color as opposed to the primary color (for the Brewers it was grey instead of blue, and when he went to the Mets he wore an orange chest pad instead of blue). And now of course there are those hockey style helmets.

Edited to show how I was agreeing with Colbyjack. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

Daron can feel free to jinx any Diamondback's no-hit bid against the Brewers by blabbing about it. Even if it's Sharpie. (There, I said it. Perhaps the healing has begun.)

Remember: the Brewers never panic like you do.

I think that would be more important if it were a radio broadcast. I can see everything that is happening...I don't need it described in detail. I don't think they are "concentrating on describing the action" anyways. I think they don't have enough personality to stray from there notes and stats or to stray from just describing exactly what's happening on the field.

If that's what you want in an announcer for a game on TV, why not just turn the sound down, because they are not really saying anything that you can't see for yourself. Sorry, I like a little humor and excitement when it comes to TV announcers.

Is it just me or did you guys see a few balls in the dirt that were not taken out of play and used again? This no longer happens.

No pitch counts. No gun.

Patrick...maybe I am mad because of 24..lol..but a lot of people hate the "look at me I am an announcer and I will be the life of the party" crap. It was all I could handle to listen to Matt but he was my age group and rather creative. Sutton just plain sucked. This new guy who knows? Hegan ( ahhh.. Ball Four..) and Paschke JUST CALLED THE GAME. No Bucketheads( sorry bucketheadshttp://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif No Grilling. No ridiculous pop culture references. Just baseball and I like that. To say Paschke doesn't know baseball is also just plain ignorant. He's probably forgot more baseball moments than we remember.

Announcing is so much different than it was 10 years ago. And it's not just baseball, it's all sports. You can't watch a football game without having some guy telling you how much sweat is rolling some guys thighs when there is nothing else to talk about.

It's ok to be silent in between plays. You don't have to fill an entire broadcaster with chatter.

I agree, I appreciated the way the no-hitter was called. It was called as if nothing special were happening. No hints, no cute innuendos. I'm not big into superstitions, but messing with a no hitter is one that I have always taken more seriously. I didn't even want to talk about it during the re-broadcast http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif .

If there is not already, that should be a man law. There shall be no mention of a no-hitter until said no-hitter is complete or broken up. The score at the top and bottom of the innings should tell you that. Pay Attention! Boy, Daron was the worst with that.

Ok,

a) I'll admit, my comment about Pashke's knowlege of baseball was maybe slightly unfounded. Since he never really expounded on baseball other than calling out stats and doing play by play, I guess I don't really know. I guess (wrong or right) I just always viewed him as a local plaid coat type sportscaster that lucked into the Brewer announcing job. I guess I have never been a big fan of local network affiliate sportscasters.

b) Yes, it was amazing that they never mentioned the no-hitter. Although, it was a different time. Cable and ESPN were in it's infancy. Now, just about any night, you can flip through the channels and catch several sporting events. That wasn't true back then. Also, remote controls were also not as common and/or as sophisticated back then (previoius channel button). The casual fan tends to surf the channels now. He or she might stop on a baseball game for an inning or two and then flip to something else. The announcers are aware of this and know that they need to make mention that something special is happening to keep the viewers attention.

I'm not saying that I was Sutton's biggest fan. He was not critical enough for me. I also don't like the announcer who has to constantly remind the fans how much he knows about baseball like Tim McCarver. To me, Jim Powell is the ultimate announcer. Knowledgeable, not too much of a cheer leader, has excitement in his voice, and has a sense of humor (you have to when your sitting next to Uecker for 162 games).
