Need Help With New York Ballpark Trip Info!

billyhallfan

Hey everybody, we are doing our annual ballpark trip, and we are going to both New York parks. We have a cottage that we can stay in for free in Hadley, NY. And on Tuesday night we will stay in the cottage, and drive to NYC to watch the Yankees play, we then want to get a hotel on Tuesday night, and then go to the Mets game on Wednesday...

So my question is, all we need to find is one hotel in NYC...We would like to have it cheap, but obviously, not so cheap that we get mugged, and another thing, is that we want to take public transportation (subway) to get to the parks, so we don't have to drive...

If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated, we need a spot to park in NYC, a way to get to Yankee Stadium via Subway, a way to get back to the car, and a place to stay in an affordable hotel, and then a way to get to Shea...

any help would be greatly appreciated...

Thanks a lot...

I don't know your budget, but I've stayed at the Hudson a few times, there's also a Marriott Courtyard in Manhattan. . .And the weirdest place I've stayed there was the Gershwin hotel. It was very odd, but okay on the budget, and we emerged unscathed.

as far as subways:

the green line (4,5, and 6) or the orange line (B and D) will take you right next to yankee stadium. (161st St exit)

take the 7 (purple) line to the willets pt stop (2nd from the end) to get to shea stadium

see the map below.

what kind of money are you looking to spend per night???

I'd give the St. Mark's Hotel a shot. It's right next to the 6 train in the East Village. Trains won't be so packed getting on there, and the rates are pretty reasonable for Manhattan. Lots of fun to be had in the Village too... Plenty of great bars and restaurants. It's also not to hard to get to the 7 train from there as well - the NW line a couple blocks away will take you to Queensboro Plaza where you can jump on the 7 to Shea.

I too am going to NY and going to hit up the Twins Yankees game. Any advice on where to sit at yankee stadium? I am just going to get tix on stub hub or sometthing. It is worth spending the money to get better seats? Are there any sections I should avoid at all costs?

Sorry to hijak the thread bhf!

Unfortunately, the only thing I can offer is a bar recommendation near yankee stadium. You're on the right track taking the subway though. The stop is like 2 steps from Yankee Stadium.

Also agreed on Shea Stadium that the stop is two steps from the stadium. I wouldnt stay anywhere in Shea however. Also, if you dont have FL seats at Shea, you wont be able to access the FL concourse. Of the 5 boroughs, stay in Manhatten. Also, consider taking the other trains to the northern "suburbs" such as Sleepy Hollow or Tarrytown, and staying in a Bed & Breakfast. The train commute is only about 40 minutes.

I would guess you're looking at about $300 in gas...but if you fill up in NYC it's already $5/gallon there. Midwest Express has really convenient flights from MKE to NYC. If you don't fly on high-traffic days, you can get them from about $150 - $250 per person.

Josh, It's a 1760 mile round-trip. That's considering you are taking other forms of transportation once getting to NYC. I have a Toyota Corolla and get roughly 35mpg. So that is needing 50 gallons of gas. Considering $4.20 a gallon as a conservative estimate (as you go east, the price rises) you are looking at $210.00 in gas for the roundtrip. Split between two people, that is $110.00. I don't recall what you drive, but a cheaper roundtrip ticket can be had, rather than losing two days of your life driving, unless of course that appeals to you. When going to NY, I fly to Westchester County Airport (HPN) with Airtran Airways. It's a $89/each way fare.

I didn't realize it was so cheap to fly. It would make a lot more sense to fly there then.

Anyways, I meant to ask what the total trip would cost with everything included. Two tickets to Shea and Yankee stadium, food, hotel cost, plane tickets, and whatever else we will end up having to pay for.

Sorry for high jacking the thread BHF, I was just hoping to get a quick answer since it was on the same topic.

i was in new york last month and went to a yankees game. we stayed at a marriott in midtown manhattan (3 E 40th St - or 40th St. and 5th Ave.) for around $300 a night (over a weekend). I highly recommend this hotel as being worth the money. clean, newly updated/rennovated, quiet, extremely comfortable beds, and a really good location.

as far as the subways, just plan on getting to the stadium really early. you'll want to walk around and see the new stadium and the memorial area anyways, so you shouldnt really have to plan for spending extra time in the subway. they dont run that much slower jsut because they will be more packed. catching a subway 2-2.5 hours before a game should give you plenty of time to get there and have extra time no matter where you are staying in NYC.

in yankee stadium, we sat in the upper deck on the 3rd base line. We paid $60 or so on stubhub for tickets. the seats were fine, but the only downfall was that we missed the controversial homerun that was called a foul ball during the mets/yankees game. here are some pictures from our seats. I was happy paying $60 for that seat because i didn't think $20+ was worth paying just to see the entire 3rd base line.

I was just in NY a couple of weeks ago, and we caught a Mets game out at Shea. Definitely stay in Manhattan, even though it is a bit more expensive. We stayed at the Wellington just south of Central Park, and it was only about $200 a night, plus it's right next to a subway stop. I will reiterate, the subway is the way to go, as you can get off right next to the park in both cases, and in most cases it's not THAT crowded anyway. The great thing about staying in Manhattan is that you can also walk to any of the touristy things you might want to see when you are not at a game.

  • 1 month later...

Good info in this thread; my wife and I are taking the red-eye out next Thursday night and are attending the Yankees' game next Saturday, which happens to be Old Timers Day there. I'm not as excited about it as I might've been after looking at the names ("OMG! THE Tino Martinez?!?!?") but I'm looking forward to it regardless.

Initially we were talking about taking the "Yankee Clipper" ferry to the game since I thought the views would be great, we could enjoy some barley pops, and we'd avoid the subway crush (having lived in Chicago, there was nothing worse than taking the red line home from work the night of a Cubs game), but I just didn't want to get tied down by the ferry's schedule (we'll probably bail early--sacrilege, I know, but it's a 3:55 start and we'll have dinner plans and be meeting up with friends) so subway it is--smells, heat, wayward hands, and all.

Anyway, two questions I have for my first and last visit to Old (New) Yankees Stadium that I can't seem to find answers for:

1. What are the truly older parts of the park--the original architecture? The refurbishment seemed to really do a number on the place, and I'd like to see the stuff Ruth Built, not necessarily Jackson and Steinbrenner Built.

2. How does one enter Monument Park? I'm having a hard time getting info on this. Our tickets say Gate 2, for what it's worth.

Thanks guys.
