Anybody worried about our 40 man roster after the season?

I count about 15 AA guys that are going to need to be on there. We'll have about 17 from our big league squad. If I am anywhere near correct, that leaves eight spots for any current AAA guys and any high A ball guys that a team could conceivably store on their big league roster because of a really high ceiling. How are we going to handle this before the rule five draft?

I've actually been looking at this recently. I came up with the below list of players that are eligible for the Rule 5 draft (P50 rating in parenthesis). I'm sure there are a few others. There is a lot of players on this list, but the way Melvin structured this year's roster he has a lot of flexibility. I could see 13 of the current 40 players that could be let go at the end of the year to make room for prospects (Branyan, Cameron, Capuano, Choate, Counsell, DiFelice, Gagne, Gardner, Kapler, Mota, Sheets, Shouse, Tavarez ).

Need to protect:

Matt Gamel (#2) - AA

Angel Salome (#5) - AA

Lorenzo Cain (#12) - A+/AAA

Steve Hammond (#19) - AA

Mike Bell (#27) - AA

Derek Miller (#28) - AA

Remaining P50 to consider adding:

Josh Butler (#20) - A+

Alex Periard (#21) - A+

Darren Ford (#23) - A+

Steve Chapman (#29) - A+

Robert Hinton (#34) - AA

Brendan Katin (#35) - AAA

Chris Narveson (#36) - AAA

Mark Rogers (#41) - A+ (DL)

Patrick Ryan (#42) - AA

Adam Heether (#44) - AAA

Dave Welch (#45) - AA

Charlie Fermaint (#47) - A+

Callix Crabbe (#48) - AAA

Are O.Aguilar and A.Rivas eligible also?

The rest:

AAA - Steve Bray, Sam Narron

AA - Dave Johnson, Mike Jones

A+ - Kenny Holmberg, Josh Wahpepah

A- - John Alonso

Of the "consider" list I would add Welch for sure, probably Rogers and Narron, maybe Narveson and Periard, possibly Katin; Ryan and Hinton would be long shots. The others I don't think would be in much jeopardy of losing.

Given the state of pitching in the upper levels of the organization I would be very surprised if they let Sheets go. And one of Cameron or Kapler would be needed back to play CF. Branyan would be nice to have back. The other 10 could be dropped to add Gamel, Salome, Cain, Hammond, Bell, Miller, Welch, Rogers, Narron, and one of Narveson/Periard. That would be enough to protect.

Aguilar and Rivas won't be eligible until 2010, I think. Rivas was 19 when he signed, but he counts as 18 because it's the age as of the June 5 before the contract was signed, right?
I'm not so sure. It's 4 years after they were "signed", 5 if they were 18 or younger at the time. Link. I believe they both signed in 2005, Aguilar was 20 and Rivas was 19. So they would be eligible after 4 years of being a pro, meaning this years draft (2005, 2006, 2007, & 2008).

What I don't know is if there is some other exception that I'm not aware of. Baseball is famous for these. None of there rules are black/white.

You're right, kind of. "Four years" I think translates as "four Rule 5 drafts exposed to", which would make them both eligible next year. if Rivas counted as 19 when he signed, or Aguilar next year and Rivas in 2010, if Rivas counted as 18. I was counting from 2006 for Aguilar, forgetting that he didn't play the year he was drafted.

DM has always said that the best time to trade position players is in the off-season. Unless there's a perfect trading partner at the deadline who has something that you need that not many other contenders need, they you are probably going to get better value in the offseason. That's where I see things happening.

Al is indicating that over the years, who have the Brewers lost on waiver claims -- here's the short list:

RHP Tim Bausher in '04

RHP Pedro Liriano prior to '05

RHP Greg Aquino

OF Drew Anderson

Doug has done a masterful job protecting the proper kids over the years, and choosing to expose them to waivers at the proper time.

In the post ClosetBrewerFan made that included his list (above), he wasn't implying that all those names were necessarily worthy of 40-man inclusion, simply stating that those players were 40-man eligible.

We got him back because it turned out he wasn't ready... I fail to see how DM screwed that one up. He is and will be nothing more than role player for Milwaukee, the same exact role he would have in SD, not that there's anything wrong with be utlity guy, but it's not like he let Braun get away. The uproar over losing Cruz (a potential starter) was much greater than Crabbe, and he hasn't been able to stick in the bigs yet either. Every team has to have to role players to be successful, but I'm not going to get worked up when DM doesn't agree with who I think should be a utility guy for the big league club.

The list is impressive if the B.rewers current 40-man didn't have flexibility. I also think we need to keep in mind the realistic chance of A or A+ players get taken in the rule 5 major league draft. The Brewers current 40-man is flexible, but I have a feeling either this July or in the off-season it will be even more flexible. It's not a bad problem to have in terms of enough players to protect, but the Brewers brass has shown a good ability in this regard in recent years.
