I would have to think the odds of him C in the big leagues is slim, as he will be awkward if he grows (of course, Joe Mauer shows there can be exceptions). Just looking at his past, he might well hit his way to the bigs well before he has the ability to catch as well.

2nd or 3rd best hitting prospect in the draft, per ESPN...that sounds like a Jack Z calling card.

I dont buy him making it at catcher, either..partially because of Lucroy and Salome.

I don't buy that you aren't allowed to have 3 catching prospects in your entire system. Don't forget that Lawrie is 18 and will start at the bottom. You can never have enough catching.

Colby's buddy on Frederickson:

The most interesting of those names could be Fredrickson, a 6-6 lefty who Baseball America ranks as the No. 116 prospect. He throws 94-96 mph and, at times, has a dominating curveball.

"He could go surprisingly high, because there is no one with better pure, raw stuff in the draft," Rawnsley said. "Sometimes he throws 96 with a hammer, and sometimes he bounces balls to the backstop."

From the U of Louisville website noting Odorizzi's signing.

Jake Odorizzi

RHP/INF

Highland, Illinois/Highland HS

Odorizzi, a 6'2" right-handed pitcher who also plays shortstop, is rated as the top prep baseball player in the state of Illinois by Prep Baseball Report. Baseball America ranks him as the 66th best high school prospect in the nation. An excellent student who many regard as one of the top two-way players in the nation, Odorizzi hit .435 with 15 doubles, 13 home runs, 42 RBI and 23 steals while compiling an 11-0 record on the mound with an 0.70 ERA and 109 K's for the Bulldogs as a junior last season. His 13 home runs and 11 wins were both school records. He is 21-7 during his prep career with 200 strikeouts in 181 innings. He is also a two-time All-Conference WR on the football team and has lettered three seasons in basketball. He choose Louisville over offers from Clemson, North Carolina, Missouri State, Missouri, Arkansas and Nebraska.

This is his 2007 stats as the signing took place in November of 2007.

From this story you can find his 2008 stats.

The 6-foot-1, 175-pound senior right-handed pitcher started 10-0 with a 0.00 ERA and 108 strikeouts in 62.1 innings this season, leading the Bulldogs to a 29-3 record this season entering the Class 3A Regional Finals. Joe, they said the same thing about some guy named Verlander, too, and he's found pretty good control. His mechanics look a mess, as his leg-kick throws his whole motion off. IF they can tone down the excess movement, he'll do fine

who said that? Verlander didn't walk even close to the amount of guys that Frederickson did, his college walk per 9 numbers were 3.42, 3.33, and 3.66. That doesn't seem all that bad and is certainly nowhere near Frederickson's numbers.

edit: actually, it appears that Neighborgall actually had better control than Frederickson in college and Neighborgall ended up walking 27 (yes, 27) guys per 9 in pro ball. I'm not saying that that will happen to Frederickson, but it has to be a concern, imo.

Lawrie on catching:
The six-foot-one, 180-pound Lawrie hopes to follow in the footsteps of Dodgers all-star catcher Russell Martin, a converted third baseman from East York, Ont.

"I like to model my game around him," said Lawrie, whom some scouts believe is the most advanced hitter at age 18 in Canadian history.

"He didn't start catching until he was coming right out of junior college and I've challenged myself. I can play a number of positions, third base real well, I can play second, the outfield and I didn't want to limit myself to one position."
