What would it take to get Greinke?

Would a Gillespie, Hardy or Hall (Hall would be under control longer than Hardy), Brad Nelson to get Greinke and a low level prospect? I don't know the Royals farm system of who would be available for us to get with this trade.

For the Royals with Hall or Hardy you can put them at SS and get more production than Tony Pena Jr. is currently giving them. With Gillespie they have a future corner outfielder. I'm not sure what the situation is with the Royals and their farm system so maybe a deal like this would replenish it for them. Maybe remove Hall or Hardy and Gillespie and trade LaPorta, Iribarren, and Crabe for Greinke and a low level prospect.

Any other thoughts?

This is a great idea. I think Greinke could be gotten for a player(s) not named Gamel or LaPorta so I would be all for it. If we could trade Hall or Hardy with a any prospect other then Gamel or LaPorta I say do it Doug!

I guess I don't think KC would have any interest in acquiring expensive or arby-eligible players... Especially with Hall's and Hardy's stock, seemingly at their lowest points right now.

Good point Brian, perhaps I was just dreaming how great our rotation would look with Greinke in it. What about making a deal for Livan Hernandez if the Twins would part with him?

Meh, you're pretty much guaranteed 200 innings from Livan, but you're also guaranteed something near a 5 ERA ... I could think of worse guys to have as a 5th starter, but I don't think he's worth giving up anything of value for.,

I'd trade Hall, Gillespie and Brad Nelson for Greinke in a heartbeat, if the the Royals are interested.

Wow, I just about had that typed in verbatim earlier but it didn't post with the darn, recent hit-and-miss servers. Didn't bother to repost the one-liner. Take out "I guess" and "seemingly" and add "about" before "their," and I think I had it.

Well I posted this in the Bill Hall wants to be traded topic but I'll repeat it here:

Some proposals by ordinary fans on mlbtraderumors:

Hall & LaPorta for Grienke

Braun & Fielder for Grienke (I wonder if he is a Royals fan?)

Hall & LaPorta for Grienke
That's not a bad deal for either team imo. Hall would be a huge improvement at SS over Tony Pena Jr. and LaPorta would give them a big time positional prospect to help out their lineup in the very near future.

Greinke is 24 and putting up an ERA under 3.00. I believe he has two years left before free agency. That's not the profile of a guy who's gonna come cheaply. Any deal would have to start with LaPorta or Gamel and then add at least one more decent player or prospect to top it off.

Greinke does have a lot of baggage, depression nearly ended his a career a couple of years ago.

He pitched well last year, and has so far this year as well, hopefully he's found a treatment regimen that works for him.

Greinke is still very young, and very talented, he'd be a good guy to get. I'm sure KC would have no trouble moving him if they decide to pursue it, and that deal would be all about young bats. The Brewers do match up well, if they think Greinke's the guy.

  • 3 weeks later...
Time to revive this idea, especially with us discussing Mark G...

See the Mark G thread for my rationale, but i think we should offer the Royals Rickie Weeks as part of any package. I'd definitely rather give up Weeks than LaPorta or Gamel.

Weeks, Carlos V, and Gillespie for Greinke/Mark G

I'd rather give up Weeks than either of those two aswell, but what about 2B for the rest of the season? Do we really want a Counsell/Hall/Iribarren/Dillion mess the rest of the season?

Why would KC want Weeks if they are giving up Grienke? Trading Grienke means they don't seem themselves as legitimate for the next few year so why would they take on an oft injured 2B about to get really expensive?

How expensive do you expect an oft-injured, poor defensive, mediocre offensive 2B to get?

He's not going to be more expensive than the 4.5 million that they're paying Grudz this year for another couple of years.

Since Weeks has already been making 7 figures, pretty quickly.

I think Weeks gets a modest bump next year (barring a breakout yet in 08) up to maybe 1.5-2 million. Again, as they're paying Grudz 4.5 million right now, he won't be more expensive than that for probably another 2 years.

If the Royals trade Greinke its going to be for more than one hole filler for a few seasons.

I don't think anyone in either of the threads discussing Greinke has suggested that. They'd be getting another top Brewer prospect as well- Gillespie was mentioned here, Escobar mentioned elsewhere.

The Royals were asking 3 top prospects for Greinke last season, and that was when he was just a reliever. Now he's a dominant starter, and he's 3 years from FA after this season (he did not have 3 full seasons of service time entering this season, as he was a mid May call-up in 2004, and only had a couple weeks in the majors in 2006). Somebody will meet the Royals asking price for Greinke. If you curve his ERA, WHIP, and Ks for moving to the NL, he would clearly be an ace type pitcher for the Crew.

We can, and should, get Greinke. He should be the centerpiece of a package for Fielder. Sure, Greinke has some past baggage, but Fielder has some pretty serious present baggage (massive weight problem, anger management issues, financial issues) and a Scott Boras relationship. The Royals seem to like dealing with Boras, they have a suprisingly solid rotation, and a major whole at 1B. There present 1B is Ross Gload, who is terrible, and Billy Butler is a big disappointment as there DH. Butler would likely be the 1B with Fielder DHing, as even the poor defensive Butler in better than Fielder at 1B.

I say Fielder and Bush for Greinke and Joakim Soria. Soria gives the Brewers an outstanding closer for years to come, but he just a luxory on a bad team like the Royals.I throw in Bush because he would be out of the rotation, has no trade value as evidenced by him clearing waivers earlier this year, and would have to clear waivers again to go to AAA. I'm not sure if the Royals would him to fill Greinke's spot in the rotation though. They have an outstanding talent in Carlos Rosa presently working in relief, and he could be promoted to the rotation.

Grienke will have 4 years of service time at the end of the season

Whats your source on that? http://www.mlb4u.com/profile.php?id=845 gives him 1 year and 135 days entering this season, but there a year off IMO. There not 2 years off though.
