Trade for Brian Fuentes (and the draft picks to follow)

This is a guy who will most likely be on the trading block very soon if not even now...

Fuentes is in the last year of his contract and he is a nice reliever (2.78 ERA .229 BAA 1.19 WHIP as of 6/2) for a team that is going nowhere and already talking about shipping some guys out...

He has closing experience, you know, in case our guy gets shaky or hurt or something and is a lefty to boot...Much like the Scott Linebrink trade we can send some kids, and if Fuentes walks after the year, then we get to enjoy another two draft picks for Jack Z...

For all of you that hated the Linebrink trade this may not be your cup of tea...but if you liked getting the two extra picks then I ask you...what 2 or maybe 3 kids do you send to Denver for Brian Fuentes...and the subsequent draft picks to follow?

I hated the Linebrink trade, I'll reserve judgement until Friday on it, however. I will say this, I don't think Fuentes would garner as much in return as Linebrink did. If we could get him for some mid range prospects, I'd do it. I don't want to see anyone like Gamel, LaPorta, Escobar, Jeffries, Braddock, etc dealt for him, though.

I think just the opposite. Fuentes is having a better season this year than Linebrink was last year, and has the Proven Closer label attached to him. You'll pay through the nose for those saves, which is dumb because they indicate nothing about his talent level.

Their actual quality is pretty similar, but all the stupid stuff MLB teams care about too much works to drive up Fuentes's value.

I guess what I was asking was if anyone could come up with 2 or maybe 3 kids that A) they would be willing to part with B) COL would take in return for a player possibly leaving at the end of the season C) would make 2 high end draft picks worthwhile...

As in Errecart/Iribarren/Gillespie for Fuentes (or 2 picks next year)...for example...

Two things make sense to me...1) trading two or three guys that are not making this team anyway (or play significantly anytime soon) for 2 high 2009 draft picks (ala Linebrink or Cordero) think of it as an investment...2) Finding a better Guillermo Mota...

Fuentes is merely a way to make both those things happen. As much as I love what Dillard is doing and what Stetter and to some extent ZachJack did, I feel that come crunch time I just want someone better on the hill. I hope that Gagne comes back to his long lost form and Riske pitches lights out for the rest of the year...but I'd still want to move Errecart, Fermaint, and Katin for 2 stud draft picks like an Odorizzi and a Dykstra...

Just a thought...the Inman, Garrison, Thatcher trade seemed to make sense to me in that way...this is a great! forum for such banter...

Conversely, I do not feel compelled to move Sheets even if he doesn't look to re-sign and we are out of contention...the offer would have to be better than 2 high picks...6 draft picks out of the top 62 for two years in a row is not such a bad thing...
