Site rules / yes, we're square

Had a user banned today because he struck out... I just need to re-iterate that acronyms and short-hand for swears (i.e. BS and W-T-F) are NOT allowed here, even if the terms have become basic parts of modern internet vocabulary.

In a "parting shot" private message, the user mentioned how ridiculous the site's rules are. I know that compared to other internet message boards, we're probably about as strict as strict gets. I feel that this is one of the things that separates us from the competition, and if people disagree with it, they can make their choice as to what forum(s) they frequent.

Bottom line, if you don't respect the rules of the site, don't post here. I'm not going to be heartbroken if we're not all things to all people. The rules are posted all over the place, so if you've received in as strike in the past, please re-read them. I really don't take much joy in giving the go-ahead to throw down the ban hammer, as I really do enjoy all the viewpoints we have here.

Thanks for your understanding... and as always, I've always been very open regarding discussing site matters either publicly or privately, so don't hesitate if there's improvements/suggestions that you'd like to bring up. That doesn't mean that we'll always go that route, but I want every one to have an equal voice here.

Rules aren't just for nerds anymore.

The reason some of us come here instead of the other Brewere sites are because of the rules. I think the rules provide an atmosphere that allows discussion to remain on topic without the noise of people baiting each other into peeing wars and verbal abuse about others mothers or how much they suck. Without the verbal abuse it keeps people on subject which in turn makes the threads all that much more enjoyable for others to read. Not to mention I already know I'm an idiot so I don't really need to have people tell me every other thread how much of one I am.

Do you guys PM posters if they frequently do things that are not necessarily strike worthy, but are close?

We do our very best to warn users first via PM if there's things that are borderline strike-worthy. It's not very often that we'll just wind up and "throw one down Wisconsin Avenue" if it's someone who has no previous track record of being a problem user (altho it has happened). I'm sure some of the banned users will disagree with me, but we really try our best to work with users to find a resolution.

Mods even PM members before a situation escalates to the point where a non-strike warning is required.

We spent a lot of time trying to "hone" this member. Before being banned, he was issued six warnings and two strikes. He was even issued a "strike two and half" just to err on the side of fairness. Additionally, he was PMed numerous times outside the strike/warning system.

The mind blower is that this member expressed surprise that his third strike violated a rule. Given all the time moderators spent trying to encourage him to comply, one would think he would have become familiar with the Rules of Conduct.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

Sounds like you spent a lot of time trying to spell out exactly what you wanted this person to do and they still didn't comply. Almost sounds like they intentionally didn't comply.

Fan is short for fanatic.

Hmm, Brewerfan.net strikes... like points on your driver's license, only better.

Without saying too much, is it possible to lose a strike for "good behavior"?

That's currently not part of our policy, as we feel that the three strike rule is pretty clear-cut and generous. I won't close the door on it, but for now, a strike's permanent.

OK, just checking for, uh, a friend
