Turnbow starts to change luck with Sounds

By MIKE ORGAN

Tennessean Staff Writer

Former Franklin High standout Derrick Turnbow made his second start Sunday since joining the Sounds on May 12.

Turnbow pitched two innings and allowed no runs on one hit. He struck out three batters and walked two.

It was his best performance on the mound since he's been with Nashville. The team hopes that having Turnbow start instead of coming out of the bullpen will help him get into a pitching groove.

Heading into Sunday's game the right-hander had walked 21 batters while striking our seven in seven appearances.

Ben Howard replaced Turnbow at the start of the third inning and gave up a home run against the second batter he faced, Felix Pie, to cut Nashville's lead to 2-1.

Howard pitched five innings and allowed just one more hit while striking out six. It was the longest Howard has pitched in one game in five seasons.

"I just wanted to go out there and keep the game close and keep us in the game and I didn't really know what to expect with it being the first time I've gone that long in five years,'' Howard said. "I expect to be sore tomorrow."

Streaks: Sounds catcher Vinny Rottino extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a single in the ninth inning. That is the longest hitting streak this season for a Sounds player and is the longest active streak in the Pacific Coast League.

Sounds fielders have not committed an error in the last four games. That is the longest streak this season for Nashville.

On the run: The Sounds have been successful in 65 of 85 stolen base attempts this season, the second most steals in the league. The Sounds have been successful in 40 of their last 48 attempts, including 2-for-3 on Sunday.

Another multiple: Brendan Katin's two home runs marked the fourth time this season the Sounds have had a player hit multiple home runs in one game. Brad Nelson has had two multiple home run games and Russell Branyan, now with Milwaukee, had one.

Listach update: Iowa Manager Pat Listach is expected to return to the squad tonight after a three-day leave of absence following a death in his family. Cubs hitting coach Von Joshua filled in as manager. Joshua was the Sounds hitting coach in 1997.

New look: For the first time this season at home the Sounds wore their red mesh batting practice tops in Sunday's game. Iowa wore blue tops.
