Final: Brevard County 5, Vero Beach (Rays) 4

Brevard County Box Score

A stellar outing for Jeremy Jeffress; Mike McClendon hangs on for the save when Shawn Ferguson stuggled in the 9th; Manatees scored five in the first, then saw mega-chances pass as three consecutive singles with two outs did not generate a run in the 3rd, with Yohannis Perez thrown out at the plate -- in the sixth, the bottom of the order loaded the bases with none out, only to see the Rays' Wade Townsend pitch out of trouble; Taylor Green doubled and drew the 'Tees' only walk...

Brevard County Site Game Summary:

Manatees Ride Big First Inning to Victory
By Tyler Stover / Brevard County Manatees

(Viera, FL) Brevard County erupted for five runs in the first inning, and was able to hold on for a 5-4 victory over Vero Beach on Sunday afternoon. The big first inning was sparked when Lorenzo Cain was hit by a pitch, followed by Taylor Green's walk. Each of the next five batters drove in a run for the Manatees, staking starting pitcher Jeremy Jeffress (2-2) to a quick 5-1 lead. The lead was more than enough for Jeffress, who shut down the Devil Rays for seven innings. After allowing a leadoff home run to Desmond Jennings, Jeffress retired the next 13 batters he faced before finally allowing a walk to Chase Fontaine in the fifth inning. Jeffress allowed just one run on two hits in his seven innings, striking out six Devil Rays along the way.

After lying dormant most of the day, the Vero Beach offense sprung to life in the ninth inning. They belted three hits and drew a walk off Manatees reliever Shawn Ferguson, who was only able to get one out before giving way to closer Mike McClendon. After a groundout by Joseph Callender closed the gap to 5-4, pinch hitter Ryan Royster slapped a two-out single to rightfield to move the tying run to second. McClendon was able to finally slam the door shut, however, as he forced Jairo De La Rosa to fly out to Lorenzo Cain to end the game. Ryan Morse (2-1) took the loss for the Devil Rays, allowing all five runs scored by the Manatees.

With the win, Brevard County moves back into sole possession of second place in the FSL East, and finishes the homestand at 3-2. They now head to St. Lucie to take on the Mets in a three-game set. Alexandre Periard (4-4, 5.06) will open the series on the mound for the Manatees, facing Tobi Stoner (1-3, 2.72).

I was wondering that myself, looks he got hurt fielding that bunt somehow... I don't think they'd pull him for his pitch count in the middle of inning?

Final: Iowa (Cubs) 8, Nashville 3

Nashville Site Game Summary:

Sounds Drop Second Straight To I-Cubs, 8-3

NASHVILLE - The Iowa Cubs rallied for six runs in the top of the eighth inning to post a come-from-behind 8-3 victory over the Nashville Sounds on Sunday afternoon at Greer Stadium.

Nashville left fielder Brendan Katin drove in two of the Sounds' three scores with a pair of home runs. The effort was the fourth multiple-homer game by a Nashville player this season.

The Sounds opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning with an unearned run stemming from a throwing error by Iowa second baseman Eric Patterson. Tony Gwynn, who singled and stole second, came plateward on the gaff.

Katin doubled the lead to 2-0 in the second when he slugged a one-out solo homer to left-center off Cubs starter Justin Berg, his seventh longball of the year.

Derrick Turnbow started for the Sounds and worked two scoreless innings, allowing one hit while walking two batters and striking out three.

Iowa center fielder Felix Pie put the visitors on the board in the top of the third when he lifted an opposite-field solo homer to left off Nashville reliever Ben Howard, making it a 2-1 contest.

The Cubs tied it at 2-2 an inning later with an unearned run against Howard. Josh Kroeger opened with a walk, moved to second on a passed ball, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on Koyie Hill's sacrifice fly.

Katin struck again in the fourth when he blasted a two-out home run to center, his second tater of the day, to give the Sounds a 3-2 lead.

Howard turned in his longest outing of the season in relief of Turnbow, working an effective five innings and allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits while striking out six batters.

The Cubs took immediate advantage of his departure, touching left-hander Zach Jackson for six runs in the top of the eighth to grab a 8-3 lead. The first six batters reached base safely against the southpaw. Patterson re-tied the game at 3-3 when he greeted Jackson with a home run to center, his second longball of the year. Kroeger and Jason Dubois added RBI singles later in the frame before Hill ripped a two-run double down the left field line and ex-Sound Luis Figueroa contributed a sacrifice fly to cap the rally.

Sounds catcher Vinny Rottino singled in the ninth inning to extend Nashville's longest hitting streak of the year to 12 games.

Cubs reliever Hector Carrasco (2-1) picked up the victory after working three innings of scoreless, one-hit ball for Iowa.

Jackson (1-4) took the loss after allowing six runs on five hits and a walk in his lone frame of action.

The teams continue the series with a 7 p.m. meeting on Monday evening. Right-hander Richie Gardner (4-1, 4.68), a winner in his last four decisions, will man the bump for the Sounds to face Iowa southpaw Randy Keisler (4-5, 3.00).

Nashville Box Score

Zach Jackson has allowed 60 hits in just 41.2 innings -- yuck...

Final: West Virginia 7, Greensboro (Marlins) 5

West Virginia Site Game Summary:

POWER SWEEP GRASSHOPPERS

The West Virginia Power erased a three-run deficit on Sunday night at NewBridge Bank Park to win their fourth game in a row, sweeping the Greensboro Grasshoppers in a 7-5 victory.

Eric Farris's two-out single scored Curt Rindal in the third inning to give West Virginia the early lead. The Grasshoppers answered quickly, tying the game during the next half-inning when Hunter Mense's sacrifice fly scored Tyler Belcher. The Grasshoppers broke the tie in the fifth inning on Bryan Petersen's three-run homer. West Virginia tied the game with three in the sixth inning. Steffan Wilson singled in Matt Cline and Zelous Wheeler tied the game with a two-out double that scored Wilson and Jonathan Lucroy.

West Virginia had the bases loaded and one out in the eighth inning when the only error of the game occurred, and it was costly for the Grasshoppers. Wheeler hit a groundball to the shortstop Emilio Ontiveros who flipped to second for the force out, but Caleb Gindl's hard slide into second base forced an awkward throw from second baseman Danny Garcia and the ball bounced a few times before it got past first baseman Belcher which allowed two runs to score. Ryan Curry singled in a run in the bottom of the eighth to make it a one-run game. The Greensboro bullpen had not allowed an earned run in 32 consecutive innings going into the game, but that changed when Cline delivered a big two-out single that scored Eric Fryer in the ninth.

Nick Tyson (2-1) allowed a run on a hit with a walk and struck out one batter over two and two-thirds to get the victory. Mike Ramlow (5) tossed a scoreless inning and two-thirds to secure the save. Steve Cishek (1-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing a pair of unearned runs over an inning and two-thirds. Evan Anundsen allowed two runs on five hits with four strikeouts through four and a third.

The Power improved to 23-32 with the win and the Grasshoppers fell to 28-28 with the loss. The victory improved West Virginia's road record to 16-15. West Virginia is now 20-7 all time at NewBridge Bank Park. Cline paced the Power with three hits, going 3-for-5 and Lucroy went 2-for-5, extending his hitting streak to six games. Lucroy has recorded five straight multi-hit games.

The Power will begin a two game series against the Lexington Legends at Appalachian Power Park on Monday night. Left hander Chris Cody (1-0, 1.80) will get the start for the Power and the Legends will counter with right hander Carlos Ladeuth (1-5, 4.39). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM (6:05 Central).

West Virginia Box Score

I was listening to the game at the time, and indeed, Evan Anundsen's departure was mostly related to his pitch count -- he threw a lot of pitches in a relatively short outing; the teams relievers combined to allow all six inherited runners to score; Caleb Gindl walked twice and stole his seventh base in eight tries, he was only 4-for-8 all of last season in Helena...

Power is on season's longest win streak

by Jacob Messer

Charleston Daily Mail sportswriter

West Virginia Power Manager Jeff Isom praised and challenged his players in the same breath last week.

"At the beginning of the season, we were losing games by three, four or more runs; now, there are a lot of one- and two-run games," Isom said Tuesday after the Lakewood (N.J.) BlueClaws swept his team in a four-game series that ended with back-to-back one-run losses.

"It's a credit to our players, but we have to turn that corner and we have to learn how to win games. We're close, but we're a little ways off right now. It's just a matter of finding a will and finding a way to get it done."

The players apparently found both because they swept the Greensboro (N.C.) Grasshoppers in a four-game series that started with back-to-back-to-back one-run wins.

"It was a combination of us jumping out to an early lead and the bullpen coming in and closing out the game at the end in those first three games," said Isom, whose team has lost nine games by one run and seven games by two runs this season. "We hope we can carry that over to the homestand."

West Virginia will begin a two-game South Atlantic League series against the Lexington (Ky.) Legends at 7:05 tonight (6:05 Central) at Appalachian Power Park.

The Power (23-32) and the Legends (18-37) have the worst records in the eight-team Northern Division. Seventh-place West Virginia is 10 1/2 games out of first; eighth-place Lexington is 15 1/2 back.

West Virginia will start left-hander Chris Cody (1-0, 1.80). Lexington will counter with right-hander Carlos Ladeuth (1-5, 4.39).

The Power's four-game winning streak is its longest this season. It previously had a three-game stretch and a trio of two-game stretches.

"We like winning and we want to continue to do that," Isom said.

The first-year manager praised Power relievers Rob Bryson, Corey Frerichs and Mike Ramlow for their performances against the Grasshoppers. The trio combined for four saves in the series, including two by Ramlow (his fourth and fifth this season) in the first and final games.

"We told the pitchers that the honeymoon is over - it is time for them to step up and show what they can do," Isom said. "Those guys have emerged. They have shown they deserve the ball at the end of the game."

No one, however, made more of an impact in the series than shortstop Matt Cline, who is the most recent addition to the Power roster.

Cline joined the team Tuesday, when its parent club, the Milwaukee Brewers, demoted him from high Class A Brevard County (Fla.) to replace shortstop Brent Brewer.

Cline, 22, hit .266 with one triple, five doubles, eight RBI, 15 runs and 25 hits in 32 games with the Manatees this season. He also made 11 errors.

Cline, a Long Beach State product whom the Brewers selected in the 22nd round of the 2007 Major League Baseball Draft, played for Isom in rookie Helena (Mont.) last season.

"He has been the big key offensively," Isom said of Cline, who is hitting .375 (6-for-16) with three RBI and four runs in four games. "He is a new face. The people in Charleston don't know who he is, but believe me, we know who he is.

"He is a really good player. (The Brewers) wanted to try to skip him and push him up a level, but that didn't work out because he wasn't getting a chance to play everyday. They wanted to bring him down here and give him an opportunity to play everyday.

"And it's no secret that we have struggled early on. They are trying to help us and get us some wins with what he can do offensively and defensively. He just goes about his business in the (No.) 2 hole.

He advances the runner and gives (catcher Jonathan) Lucroy the chance to drive in (leadoff hitter and second baseman Eric) Farris when he gets on. And he makes the routine plays at shortstop."

Cline was 3-for-5 with an RBI and a pair of runs Sunday night, when the Power erased a three-run deficit to earn a 7-5 victory over the Grasshoppers at NewBridge Bank Park, where the Charleston-based Class A club has a 20-7 all-time record.

Lucroy was 2-for-5 with two runs for West Virginia, which improved to 16-15 on the road this season.

"He is definitely swinging the bat very well right now," Isom said of Lucroy, who extended his hitting streak to six games, including five in a row with multiple hits.

"He will probably be nominated for the (South Atlantic League) Player of the Week (award) and win it with the way he is hitting the ball."

Third baseman Zelous Wheeler had three RBI against the Grasshoppers, who dropped to 28-28.

Reliever's meltdown costs Sounds a win

By MIKE ORGAN

Tennessean Staff Writer

The Sounds were left almost speechless Sunday after a disastrous eighth inning led to an 8-3 loss to Iowa.

Iowa scored six runs in the eighth inning and handed the Sounds their third consecutive loss before a Greer Stadium crowd of 3,142.

The Cubs opened the eighth against reliever Zach Jackson with the first seven batters reaching base, including Eric Patterson's leadoff homer to tie the game.

Jackson (1-4) pitched the entire inning and refused to comment after the loss. Manager Frank Kremblas, through a team spokesman, also refused to comment for the first time in his four years with the Sounds.

It was Jackson's third relief outing since rejoining the Sounds last Wednesday. He had been called up by the Milwaukee Brewers and used twice in relief.

After Patterson's home run, his second of the season, the Cubs got a single, a walk, two more singles, a hit batsman, and a two-run double before Jackson got the first out of the inning on a sacrifice fly.

Other than Jackson's trouble, Nashville's pitchers staged an impressive performance, allowing seven hits and 10 strikeouts.

Nashville's Brendan Katin hit two home runs - one in the second inning and the other in the fourth - giving the Sounds a 3-2 lead.

"Both of the pitches were hangers,'' Katin said. "The first was a changeup and the second I think was a slider. I was surprised after the first one because the second one was pretty much in the same exact spot."

What they said: "(Derrick) Turnbow went out there and threw the ball well, better than he has so that's a good sign. I just wanted to go out there and keep the game close,'' - Sounds pitcher Ben Howard, who followed Turnbow by allowing two hits in five innings.
