Who was at Friday's at Miller Park early on the 31st? Workout Day!

Brewer Fanatic Staff

Who was at Friday's at Miller Park early today? If you were, you likely saw Brewer staff working out multiple prospects that they're considering drafting, as today was the annual day when the Brewers bring in potential draftees they have particular interest in. Even our own colbyjack would be hard-pressed to identify some of the players from that vantage point without binoculars, but we know of at least one high school RHP who was in town --

St. Lucie County notebook: Brewers to get 1st-hand look at Krestalude

colbyjack tells us via this scouting report he located from the 2008 World Showcase from early January:

Damon Krestalude is a RHP with a 6'4'', 185 lb. frame from Port St. Lucie, FL who attends Port St Lucie HS. Tall, lean athletic build, body projects well, quick clean delivery, loose easy arm action, some late run to fastball, online finish, nice sinking action on change-up, 10 to 4 curveball with tight spin, curveball is a plus pitch, fastball jumps on hitters, good command, projectable. His FB is 85-87, 69 CB, 77 CH. Pitchers with these types of descriptions (clean delivery, loose easy arm action) often gain velocity as they mature, especially given this young man's impressive size.

He sounds like a prototypical Jack Z. sleeper, as colby noted to me.

You say they often gain velocity as they get older, how much could be expected? Is 5-7 MPH too much to expect? This guy would be perfect if he could hit low 90s with his fastball. I am a bit worried about taking another HS RHP, his arm action sounds like he is less of an injury risk.

The Miller Park day(s) are basically some of the middle to later round picks. I can't remember if the top tier'd players come into town or not. So I am sure the past 2 or 3 days any college kid (from Wisconsin)with a chance of getting a look was in town. I am sure there as a fair share of UWM kids down there, as well as some of the higher rated Division 3 kids.

I will try to make a few phone calls and see if I can't get some of the state kids who were there.

I actually was there. Took some kids from the school I work at and while they got a tour of MP, I watched some the of the on-field action. Don't know who he was, but there was a LHP who was pretty tough. Saw him throw for about 15 minutes.

If you had a look at the LHP, can you tell us anything about him, as far as being tall, short, big & strong or long and lithe?

For the most part we know that the pre-draft was mainly to get a look at some players the team hasn't gotten a great look at this spring, but we also know that there were a few top-tier talents in the mix as well. I know I got a first-hand look at players such as Prince Fielder, Josh Murray, Dana Eveland and Khalid Ballouli in 2002 (and Tom Wilhelmsen was in attendance, but didn't throw), and all of those guys were early picks, so if you get invited to these things you typically are very much in the team's crosshairs.

He was a pretty lanky young man. 6-3ish(?). Seemed to have lots of movement in on the RH hitters. Was able to get two guys out chasing a fastball/slider down an in. The kid looked like an athlete (they all looked like athletes). I didn't see much off-speed stuff, an again I wasn't scouting the young man, but it sure seemed like he was bringing some heat and movement. I know he threw harder then Shouse =).

I never thought of Cutter Dykstra to the Brewers, but I guess I should have, the Brewers love bloodlines.

I think the lefty you are talking about was Robbie Ross from Kentucky. He is the only lefty pitcher I know that was there forsure.

The LA Times said that Dykstra and Collier worked out for the Dodgers...which is interesting given the draft order (Dodgers pick one slot ahead of Milwaukee). Logan White seems like a guy that would be looking for similar things to Jack Z, so there may be some anxiety in the Brewers' war room every time the Dodgers pick.

Guys like Lawrie, Ross and Dykstra are more polished all-around players than most high schoolers. None of them have the ideal athleticism you look for, such as the pure tools that Hewitt presents, and I'm guessing that would excite most Brewers fans. If all three of those guys are among the Brewers early picks, fans will be pretty happy come September when they've had a chance to see what they're capable of doing at Helena.

The fact that they produce will excite Brewers fans. And it's not as though they're slouches athletically, but it may signal a trend that actually has been picking up steam the past several years as the team targets more players that actually know how to play the game and aren't drafted just because they throw 98 or run incredibly fast. All of those players have a good mix of tools and skills.

I think it's safe to say that lefty was Frederickson?

Frederickson is listed at 6-foot-6 and 230 pounds in MLB's database. He impressed Brewers officials at a Miller Park workout, including pitching coach Mike Maddux, but has room to improve his command.

"He happened to be here for a workout we had over the weekend and ran up some big-time velocities," said Zduriencik, who, in true close-to-the-vest fashion, declined to confirm a report that one of those velocities was 98 mph. "He's a fastball-curveball-changeup guy, [and] his fastball was in the mid-90s. We're excited about him. He's a kid that's come on this year, a little bit of a late bloomer."
