General Draft Discussion Thread

This is probably a novice question but I have to admit I'm a novice when it comes to the MLB draft.

Anyway, of these 6 high picks, what would be a reasonable expectation for how many of them actually reach the Majors?

Here's another draft novice question... How is it that David Riske, Mike Cameron, and Eric Gagne all gave the teams that they left supplemental first round picks, yet the Brewers didn't lose their own picks to get them? I thought we picked up a supplemental AND the signing teams 2nd round pick for Linebrink and Cordero. Wouldn't we then have lost some picks for Riske, Cameron, and Gagne???

The fact that Melville has serious signability concerns may be affecting things with him. New York being able to draft Cole and Boston drafting Kelly were partly due to concerns with their signability.

"The only things that could hold him back are some questions about his competitiveness on the mound and a commitment to Louisville."

I don't like the sound of that with this Odorizzi kid.

According to the MiLB scouting report, Odorizzi has good stuff and command, and a smooth delivery.

Edit: His fastball has very good movement, his curve is decent and his slider is rapidly improving.

Fredrickson is a high-risk, high reward player. He's a big lefty that can throw in the mid-90s, but he walks a ton of guys.

Here's a first-hand report on Odorizzi from February:

Louisville recruit Jake Odorizzi was the best of the best from this year's group, showing an incredibly live arm that easily produced radar readings in the low-90s. His fastball topped out at 93, and it never dipped below 90. He showed the ability to drop his nasty low-80s slider into the strike zone or use it to get batters fishing in the dirt. In addition to his slider, Odorizzi also showed a true 12 to six curve that was a good five miles per hour slower than his slider while showing a more dramatic, downward break.

It's easy to envision him throwing harder this spring as the weather warms up (it has nowhere to go but up) given how easy his arm works, and it's also easy envisioning him creeping into the first round come June. After seeing him last Saturday, I would be surprised to see Odorizzi end up at Louisville.

We heard a few days ago that Fredrickson had some helium. It's hard to say who would have and would not have been available in the 50s. The Brewers obviously liked him enough to not take the risk of seeing if he would have.

EDIT: Fredrickson is also the first college pitcher Jack Z. has selected before round 3.

Partly because of Salome and Lucroy, and partly because of his own athleticism, I don't see Lawrie sticking at catcher.

I think the team should try him there, because good catching is so valuable, but I don't expect him to spend a day behind the plate in Milwaukee.

Two players selected from my neck of the woods! Was thrilled that we drafted Odorizzi, it will be nice to follow someone from High School to the majors. My next door neighbor is one of the Sports editors at the Highland paper, and she has been following him forever. Don't know much about the kid from SIU, but I remember reading in the paper that they had some with MLB talent. Will be happy to post whatever local stuff comes up in the next few days about Odorizzi.

So now we have 3 quality catchers in the system? Salome, Lucroy and now Lawrie? It's a race to the MLB

You can never have too many catchers

You can never have too many pitchers

You can never have too many utility players

You can never have too many members of the ground's crew

You can never have too many equipment managers

You can never have too many hot flight attendants

You can never have too many assistants to the traveling secretary

You can never have too many sunflower seeds

Prince can never have too much tofu

What happened to Eric Thames and Zach Putnam?

Putnam just went to Cleveland in the 5th round. I know there were some recent injury concerns that may have led to the drop in draft positon.

I have no idea on Thames.
