General Draft Discussion Thread

Cubs fans are not happy about their draft pick of Cashner.

What don't they like about him? I think he has some good potential, 6-6 guy, fastball in the upper 90's. More than likely he will be a relief guy but I do not think he is anyone to be upset about. I think Cubs fans just like to complain.

I think it's mainly the uniformed nsbb fans that are upset. They can't believe that a relief pitcher would be the BPA.

20 picks have passed and Tim Meville is still available, really hope he's still around at #32 http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

I think if he is there, we take him. He is right up Jack Z's alley, big bodied high school pitcher with some stuff.

Joe, if this kid ends up being Eric Byrnes, he will have far surpassed the norm for the 16th pick. It's far from Prince or Ryan, but that's what is expected from a "very good" 16th pick.

I did not mind Josh Fields at all, until they just said he's under 6-0, which is tough for a RHP. He might have been a nice pick at 35, but not at 20.

no doubt, no doubt. It's just funny that the upside comps are so different.

wow, teams have really been reading Rany Jazyleri's study on the success rates of college 1st basemen. Also, I'd have to think LaPorta's success may have influenced this run on college 1st basemen. They're usually pretty rare in the 1st round.

"It costs you 5 million dollars per year to develop a player"

-Steve Phillips

Does that seem alittle exagerated to anyone else?

I just came on here to mention that too. That can't be accurate, not even close. Teams have over 100 minor leaguers, no way are they spending half a billion dollars a year on player development. Maybe $5 million for the whole minor league system, that seems more likely, though that's still probably high.

Yes. Considering there's like 100-some players in the minors for the Brewers each year... that means we have $500mil devoted to developing minor league players each year. Pretty sure if that was true, we might as well scrap the minor league system and just have a $580 million payroll.

I don't believe in jinxes, so having Melville and DeVall still around at 28 with the Crew up at 32 and 34 has me very optimistic about the next hour http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

Will and Steve who?

two picks until the next brewers' pick and we've still got shooter hunt, casey kelley, zach collier, tim melville, conor gillaspie and jake odorizzi (among others, obviously) on the board.

i'm hoping melville or hunt, myself.

then hopefully weatherford a little later on...

Is anybody else hoping the Brewers draft Shooter Hunt and Cutter Dykstra, just because it would be funny to have guys named Cutter and Shooter on the same team? Too bad Houston isn't still the Colt .45s.

I did not see Melville mocked in the first round by BA or ESPN today. Not saying we should buy what the media thinks, but also not sure why you think he was such a sure fire top half first rounder.

I guess my reasoning is that he is 6-5 210, 18 years old, with a good low 90's fastball and a good curve. There are not many high school arms in the draft so I figured someone would jump on him. Maybe 10-20 was a little high but 20-30 would sound more right.

I know that I don't follow the draft as much as I should, but I believe we usually wait until the kids start playing a bit before we hand out some nicknames. I want to break that trend if it really does exist. I've got 2 options for Lawrie A) Lawrie's salt or some type of other seasoning they have, or B) Wundo or the Wundo-kid, after the creole spice blend salt called Wun.Doe.Mus from Platteville, WI that can be added to everything from beef to mac'n'cheese to soup. Personally, the Wundo name would be more ironic as its a small competitor of Lawry's and of the different positions he plays where some scouts say the only spot he can't play is SS.

Yeah, I'm hoping the Brewers draft Shooter Hunt at #35.
