I like this pick, especially given the fact that they say his bat is not limited to catcher, which is good considering his d is apparently not his strong suit at this point.

I like picking bats over pitchers in the 1st round, so like LaPorta, this pick makes me happy.

Wow, I actually didn't jinx the pick this year.

Did anyone hear if Ethan Martin was announced as a RHP or a 3B? ESPN has him listed as a 3B, although that might just be how they have him listed in their database.

So what's it mean when everyone at brewerfan likes the first round pick? This seems like new territory. Is this guy destined for failure?

I wanted him too by the by. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

From this Canadian Newspaper article:

"Lawrie is not just hopeful, but confident he will rise through the minor leagues the same way he has in the draft rankings.

"We play all the professional guys, if I can hit over .400 against them, there's no problem that I can do it when I'm 19, 20, 21," said Lawrie, who has signed letter of intent with Arizona State that might be nothing more than a fallback plan. "So I plan on getting to the big leagues in a year-and-a-half. I'm not looking to take five years in the minors."

There is something "aboot" his Great attitude I like.

wait a minute, I just read the first page of this thread and people are saying the Brewers met Jemile's asking price. That's totally inaccurate according to Jemile himself. Apparently the Brewers came up $100,000- $150,000 short. It's not like they low-balled him, but they didn't meet his price. Here's the story:

From SaberScouting (feel free to move this post, I do not know if this shoud be here)

Brett Lawrie, C/UT, Brookswood HS (Canada)

Bio: 5?11, 200, Bats R, Throws R, 18 years old

The Skinny: Lawrie has a lot of helium headed into the days before the draft, but if you asked most scouts who saw him last summer, they may tell you that they saw this coming. The Canadian slugger has played catcher effectively and has showed big upside on offense and defense, flashing plus raw power and a plus arm behind the dish. He also has above-average speed, solid contact skills, plate discipline, and developing defensive skills behind the plate. Lawrie also is surprisingly refined at the pate for a Canadian prospect that hasn't had as many at-bats as most elite American prep prospects. His advanced bat was made known to teams when he had a 21-for-30 hitting streak on one swing through spring training camps, and hit 3 homers in a double-header on another trip thorough camps, facing some extended spring and low-minors arms, but also some high-level arms, including extra base hits off of Luke Hochevar and Kyle Davies. Lawrie continues to allay fears of a minor league flameout with all-out makeup and some scouts think he may work too hard. The advanced bat and periodic loss of interest defensively may even push him off of catcher to speed up the path to the big leagues, but Lawrie could play almost anywhere on the field except shortstop. Toronto and Minnesota are known to have interest in the mid-first round.

Pros: Bat, Power, Arm

Cons: Raw Tools, Lack of competition

Comparison: Upside of Eric Byrnes or Russell Martin

ESPN stated he was announced as a 3rd baseman.

I'm guessing people are flocking here to get scouting reports on players, as I can't even open the draft page right now to post the report I had on Lawrie. The attention is nice http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif.

Please supply links and stuff in the draft pick discussion thread as well if you don't mind. I've deemed this thread a free-for-all, but any pertinent info might get lost since I'm guessing no one is going to want to read through this thread later.

I feel this pick is comparable to last year. Take the big bat and find a place to play the guy. Although Lawrie is not as polished as Laporta was coming out. If he does end up being a catcher his value will increase greatly.

Does ESPN/MLB enforce using the full 5 minutes between picks to allow for media coverage? It's pretty cool having the analysis and stuff, but I kind of miss the amusement of the MLB draft having a whole round being announced in like 2 minutes, haha.
