Nashville's back home, so the Tennessean photo galleries are again available. Included among the eight shots are two each of newcomer Chris Woodward and Jeff Weaver, and the photo below of Brad Nelson which almost (but not quite) matches the infamous photo of Prince Fielder in Chattanooga a few years ago. Also, Brad was out -- Prince was safe.

Sounds lose in extra innings

By MAURICE PATTON

Tennessean Staff Writer

After forcing extra innings with a ninth-inning run Saturday night, the Sounds gave up three in the 10th and lost 5-2 to Iowa at Greer Stadium.

The loss was the fourth in six games for the Sounds and the eighth in 12 contests.

"I think we scratched out about as many runs as we could," Sounds Manager Frank Kremblas said.

The Sounds managed just five total hits against Iowa starter Randy Wells and four relievers. They scored on a second-inning throwing error and on Chris Woodward's short fly ball that center fielder Felix Pie just missed gloving. On the former play, Hernan Iribarren was running from first base with one out and scored to tie the score at 2.

"From the angle of the ball, I knew it was going to fall, so I just took off," Iribarren said. "I looked at Frank (in the third-base coaching box) and he sent me home."

Had Pie made the sliding catch, Iribarren easily would have been doubled off first base to end the game.

"He was obviously playing deep, but he closed hard on it," Kremblas said of Pie. "(Iribarren) did the right thing to keep going."

In the top of the 10th, Iowa strung together a double, a walk and a pair of singles against Mitch Stetter to rally. Nashville was unable to take advantage of a pair of walks in the bottom of the inning, as Vinny Rottino grounded into a game-ending double play.

The Sounds stranded nine runners - three in scoring position - on the night. Brad Nelson, who scored the second-inning run, was thrown out at the plate in the fourth inning following Iribarren's fly ball to left field.

"We didn't have too many timely hits," said Rottino, who had two of the team's five. "We had guys in scoring position and we didn't get the job done."

Iribarren's late run prevented Nashville starter Jeff Weaver from taking the loss. Weaver worked seven innings - tying his longest effort of the season - and held Iowa to two runs on eight hits for his second quality start (six innings or more, three earned runs or fewer).

What they said: "Weaver scattered a bunch of hits, pitched out of some trouble, made pitches when he had to." - Kremblas.

Turnbow will make second start today

By MAURICE PATTON

Tennessean Staff Writer

Derrick Turnbow will make his second start today as the Sounds continue their four-game series against Iowa.

Turnbow, who starred at Franklin High during the mid-1990s before embarking on his professional career, has struggled out of the bullpen since being demoted May 12 by the Milwaukee Brewers. Those struggles continued in his previous start, May 28 at Albuquerque; he allowed two earned runs on a hit and six walks over 1 2/3 innings.

"This way, he'll have a set time he's going out," Manager Frank Kremblas said. "He has a pattern he can follow, so he can work on his mechanics, do this and that, get into some kind of rhythm. His work on the side can be a little more focused."

Since joining the Sounds, Turnbow has made seven appearances (six in relief), winning his only decision and compiling a 13.50 ERA. In six innings, he has given up six hits and issued 21 walks with seven strikeouts.

Out with the old ... : Sounds left-hander Chris Narveson was placed on the disabled list prior to Friday's game in Albuquerque following an ankle injury suffered May 12 at Las Vegas.

Also, infielder Steve Sollmann retired following the Sounds' 9-4 loss May 26 at Memphis. Sollman homered during that game, bringing his final numbers to .210 (17-for-81) with two home runs and 10 RBIs over 31 games.

... In with the new: Chris Woodward was added to the Sounds' roster prior to Saturday's game after signing a minor league contract with the Brewers. Woodward was in the Yankees' minor league spring training camp, but was released in March and signed with the Phillies, who assigned him to Class AAA Lehigh Valley. In 19 games before his May 2 release, he hit .206 (13-for-63) and committed seven errors.

Woodward spent the previous six years in the majors - including 92 games last season with the Braves, and 164 over the 2005-06 seasons with the Mets.

The addition of Woodward is the Sounds' 61st transaction of the season. It's the earliest the team has reached that total since joining the Pacific Coast League for the 1998 season. Last year, the Sounds didn't reach 61 roster moves until Aug. 10.

Rottino roll continues: With his second-inning single, Vinny Rottino extended his hitting streak to a Sounds' season-high 11 games.

Entering Saturday's play, Rottino was tied for the longest active streak in the PCL.

Wow Flanagan with some super high praise of mat gamel there...always good to here...apparently aguilar is more of a one pitch dude at the moment, but he said he has the makings of a good slider...

I was more surprised to hear they were "impressed" with Salome's defense thus far, between the 2 halves of the interview, that was 10 minutes loaded with insight.

During Salome's suspension, he got to spend a whole lot of time working with Charlie Greene on his defensive skills. Charlie Greene is a terrific coach. Oddly, it may turn out that the suspension was a major positive for Angel's career.
