I have a hard time believing that we wouldn't be better off with Cirillo and no Counsell. I know Cirillo chose the Twins but Melvin would not give him much comfort with his playing time. Cirillo is head and shoulders above Counsell. I've seen a couple instances where it would've been nice to have kept Rottino over Gwynn as well.

craig is connecting from the way it sounds... just no luck

That was a really weak grounder to first, so not there. Plus it was first pitch hacking, not that first pitch hacking is a big thing, but it's Craig Counsell.

I agree. I think you needed to go for it in the bottom of the 6th. Better chance there than in the 8th or 9th with Broxton and Saito! Plus, we're supposed to have that great Wise/Turnbow/Cordero 7/8/9 combo, so why wouldn't you go for the lead in the 6th?!

I guess with Suppan coming up shortly and probably coming out of the game, that Ned decided to save his pinch hitters for the last three innings. Could have gone either way there I suppose.

Cirillo can't play every day and is worse than Counsell against righties and no I'm not kidding. I'm not sure he'd have been much better there as they'd have just brought in the right hander.

Not to mention Graffy is terrible at SS and I can't imagine Cirillo is much better.

Cirillo is head and shoulders better than Counsell. We could have at least guaranteed him a platoon with Graffy, which I think would have been enough to keep him. That's exactly what we're doing with Counsell anyway, and there's no way Counsell should be starting more than once every five days or so.

And if it's lack of IF depth on the bench, then all the more reason Rottino should have made the club vs Gwynn. SO, we had three OF's (Gwynn, Gross and Hart) sitting there and couldn't pinch hit for freakin' Counsel because we didn't have another IF available. Already time to rethink that decision and sway Gwynn and Rottino.

Quote:
Counsell couldn't be lifted because there is only one backup infielder with 3 more innings to play. Wasn't going to happen.

In a pinch we could always put Gross or Hart in center and move Hall to any infield position, I'm sure that wouldn't be that big of a deal for a few innings.

Yeah Counsell is useless

Actually, he's just slightly better than useless.

Wow, actually a nice play there by Counsell... but that was definitely a bit of luck. Suppan pitched 7 with only 2 runs which is excellent, but there were a ton of hard hit balls so I don't feel completely satisfied with his outing, although I can't say I'm complaining.

EDIT: And by luck I mean for Suppan, not for Counsell making that play.

Cirillo wouldn't fit the roster at all, he's not doing the same job Craig was brought in for so there really isn't any comparison.

Keeping Gwynn was a mistake for sure, pure an simple since our weak spot is in the MI until we can get a real 3B.
