How will injuries move the draft? (Putnam and Scheppers)

Recommended Posts

I don't think Putnam's status will be affected too much, as long as he's able to return today as scheduled and can also pitch the rest of the year. The way the Wolverines are playing the past couple of months, they could be gunning for Omaha, which would give Putnam 3-5 more starts between now and the end of his season.

Scheppers' injury has got to hurt him. IMO, he's definitely going to fall past where he should have gone (top 7-12 overall picks), and how far he falls is really uncertain at this point in time. The good thing for him is that he's "only" expected to miss six weeks, but those six weeks fall at a very unoportune time.

Brett Hunter could fall even farther. He still hasn't pitched since his second start of the season on Feb. 29th, even though he was expected to return a week or two ago. I noted on the college resource thread that the Brewers could be in a very good position if they're willing to take on a couple of injury risks given their extra picks, as they normally wouldn't be able to land a pair of college arms like Scheppers and Hunter at #16.

I don't think I've ever heard of a pitcher getting a stress fracture in the shoulder. Has anyone else?. Could it be a precursor to bigger problems, or become a chronic problem? If not, Scheppers could be a real steal if he slides a little. No one has him in there recent 1st round mocks, so he could be a nice get at 32 or 35. He seems to have the upside the Brewers prefer, though he was rode really hard before the injury, which scares off the Brewers, and rightfully so.

Brad Radke had a stress fracture in his shoulder in 2006.

and he was done pretty soon after that

Although Radke seemed deadset on retiring after that season even without the injury. There were several reports before the 2006 season about him calling it quits.

Brad Radke pitched with a torn labrum for two years and retired because of it rather than face surgery and extensive rehab.

He reported the stress fracture in August 2006, sat out 6+ weeks, and pitched reasonably well when he came back.

I don't know if the torn labrum is related to the stress fracture. It appears that the torn labrum came first.

As Will Carroll at BP said, we don't even know what bone in the shoulder suffered the stress fracture.

CJ had the Brewers picking him in his draft preview.

No I didn't. Re-read the part on Gray, as I had him labeled as one of my picks, not one of the Brewers picks. I felt the Brewers would be in on Gray, but it doesn't surprise me that Gray may be thinking of heading to Vandy if he has fallen out of first-round consideration due to his ankle injury.

Per the May 28th BA draft blog, the current assessment of Tanner Scheppers' shoulder is that he does not have a stress fracture. There may be a bone bruise, but other than that, the MRI was clean. Despite the change in diagnosis, Scheppers will not pitch for the remainder of the season for Fresno.
