Ah yes, another pitcher will record his career high in stikeouts for a game against the Crew. If I had a dime for every time I heard that line.

I would assume he will since it's his debut...

this is like the Chris saenz start a few years ago...i doubt they have any real scouting on this guy...they'll either kill him, or make him look awesome..

The first time through the order will be just trying to figure out what the heck the guy throws. Makes getting through the Marlins' order the first time unscathed even more important....I get the bad feeling that the Brewers will be behind early, though. At least Jorge Julio is available for the Fish tonight. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/laugh.gif

I really wish, that just once, the Brewers made a pitcher making his first major league start look like he's making his first major league start instead of looking like the ace of the staff.

What kind of line up can we expect from Yost tonight? He's had a couple interesting line ups the past few games.

Rick Vanden Hurk, rhp, Marlins

Born: May 22, 1985. B-T: R-R. Ht.: 6-5. Wt.: 190. Signed: Netherlands, 2002. Signed by: Fred Ferreira.

Signed at 17 out of the Marlins' Dutch academy, Vanden Hurk was one of the better European finds for the club under former international scouting supervisor Fred Ferreira. A converted catcher, Vanden Hurk has pitched for just three years but is polished. He's also one of the hardest workers in the Florida system and has great makeup. Shoulder tendinitis slowed him early in the 2005 season, and an elbow problem caused him to be shut down in August. In between he made progress at two Class A stops. A strike-thrower, he pitches at 88-92 mph and tops out at 94 mph with his fastball, which has late life. He tightened up his curveball and used it more often, as he did with a developing changeup. Mound time is a must for Vanden Hurk, who still lapses into bad habits mechanically, such as throwing across his body. Though he figures to start out back at high Class Jupiter for the third straight year, he still projects as a No. 3 or 4 starter in the majors.

Why would the Marlins choose Henricus, a guy who's never pitched above A ball, to start for them tonight when they could give Wes Obermueller the nod?

That isn't entirely joking and rhetorical, either. I mean I know the Marlins are suddenly and surprisingly short on upper level starters, but why does a club chose to dig so deep in their system for a spot starter?

I found this on the Baseball America Prospects Blog, posted March 27: www.baseballamerica.com/b...ects/?p=92

Quote:
Vanden Hurk?s stock improved after the 6-foot-5 righthander put up good numbers in Hawaii Winter Baseball last fall, showing improved velocity and little fear of commanding the inner half of the strike zone.

His fastball usually sits in the 93-94 mph range, but Vanden Hurk touched 97 this spring?and has a chance to dominate in the Southern League this season.

In addition to a 12-to-6 curveball and changeup, the Marlins also added a cut fastball to Vanden Hurk?s mix while he was in Hawaii, which potentially gives him another option to finish off hitters.

?He?s a big kid with good body control and really can pitch with his fastball,? Fleming said. ?His breaking ball was soft and really didn?t kind of go with him and his approach, so we gave him a cut fastball (used in Hawaii).

?We firmed up the curveball and gave him another weapon?a cutter to use so there?s not such a variance of speed. Now he has three pitches and he has a good changeup. The cutter just needs to be a cutter?just something he can use to go hard in on lefthanders.?

Sounds like he has the stuff to 2-hit the Brewers tonight.
