Would this be a Manatee Matinee? Every time there was a Link Report with Matinee in the title, I read it as Manatee.

Hand dealing as usual. And no offense as usual.

Fermaint with a 3-run shot in the ninth to take the lead. Hand has been pitching great if only he stuck out a couple more guys a game. His WHIP is now just over 1 for the season. In 51 innings he has allowed 55 base runners with 30 K's.

Final: Brevard County 3, Daytona (Cubs) 0

Daytona Site Game Summary:

It was morning baseball at its finest today at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. School children from around the Daytona Beach area took a day off from the grind of homework and learning to be schooled on the game of baseball. Even though the home team lost, they were taught very well in the ways of great pitching.

Marco Carrillo took the ball for the Cubs in hopes of picking up a second straight Daytona win. A no-hit bid was broken up in the seventh when Lorenzo Cain had a soft single. Still it was the only hit Carrillo gave up in his seven innings of work. He was very impressive pitching seven innings of scoreless baseball, but would not factor in the decision.

Brevard County pitcher Donovan Hand matched Carrillo inning-for-inning. Hand pitched seven innings of three-hit scoreless baseball. Hand didn't let a single base runner reach scoring position, making it difficult for the Cubs to score. Bobby Bramhall took the mound in the eighth for the Manatees.

It was that inning that gave the Cubs their best chance at scoring all day. Yusuf Carter reached with a two-out walk. Jim Adduci then had an infield single. That put a runner in scoring position, but Ty Wright struck out to end the inning.

Then came the ninth inning and Charlie Fermaint. With two men on, Fermaint hit a homerun off Casey Lambert. That made the score 3-0 Brevard County. The Cubs couldn't counter in the bottom of the frame and the great pitching of Carrillo was wasted. Bramhall earned the win; Billy Petrick got the loss and Omar Aguilar earned his 11th save.

Brevard County Box Score

Donovan Hand, Bobby Bramhall, and Omar Aguilar all rock; those Manatee batting averages are starting to dive, though...

Ford's average is certainly taking a dive. He shouldn't be doing this when repeating. Starting to look like Lorenzo and Caufield might be the only OF with a CHANCE for a promotion, next season. Ford and Fermaint are fighting to remain legitimate prospects, imo.

These arson wildfires in the Palm Bay / Brevard area have had an impact on the Manatees' staff:

Manatees Fans,

The wildfires in the Palm Bay area have directly affected our staff. Our Director of Group Sales, Dan Covey, and his wife Olivia's home is one of the 71 destroyed by the fires. Everything inside their walls is gone.

If anyone in the area has any extra furniture that they would like to donate to the Covey's to furnish their new home, please feel free to send a reply email or call the stadium at 321-633-9200. We will store the items at the park until they have moved into their new home. Any items that the Covey's wish not to use will be donated to other families that also have lost everything they own.

Our thoughts and prayers are with all of those affected by this tragedy and those brave firefighters that are protecting all of us.

Stay safe everyone and have a good day.

Here's some additional info from Kyle Smith -- if folks don't mind there will be a post regarding this in Wednesday and Thursday's Link Reports as well.

Thank you for your support of Dan and his family. If people would like to send donations to the Covey's they can send them directly to the team w/"Covey Fire Donation" in the memo line. I'll list the address below.

The outpouring of support for the Covey's and the people of Palm Bay has been tremendous. Teams from across the Florida State League are donating household items and are holding fundraisers in their stadiums over the next week. Truly a time in which we as organization feel blessed to have great friends.

The atmosphere in Palm Bay is teetering on chaos. With an arsonist running around town, people have to decide whether to go to work and risk losing their home while providing for their families or to standby with garden hoses in hand and take a day off from their jobs. I myself worked from home this afternoon checking outside every 15 minutes. Recently, we've heard of a couple outbreaks in the area, so we're packing up what we can in case an evacuation is needed.

Thanks again to all.

I didn't realize it was an arsonist... Clowns like this make me... well I'm not allowed to expand on that subject, but it's great to see the support they are getting from the other teams in the league.

Final: Lake County (Indians) 7, West Virginia 4

West Virginia Site Game Summary:

POWER HIT THREE HOMERS IN LOSS TO CAPTAINS

The West Virginia Power out-hit Lake County 11-7 and hit three home runs on Tuesday night at Appalachian Power Park but it was not enough to take down the first place Captains who came away with a 7-4 victory.

Roque Mercedes issued a bases loaded walk to Dustin Realini with nobody out in the top of the first to give the Captains the lead. Mercedes recovered quickly and retired the next three batters before West Virginia tied the game in the bottom of the first on Zelous Wheeler's sacrifice fly that plated Eric Farris. The Captains scored three times with two outs in the second inning to take the lead. Roman Pena knocked in the first run on his first of three run-scoring singles and he scored along with Lucas Montero on Realini's base hit. West Virginia's first of three solo shots came from Eric Fryer in the bottom of the second.

Jonathan Lucroy belted his fifth homer of the season in the bottom of the third to make it 4-3 but that was as close as the Power would get the rest of the night. Pena struck again with run scoring singles in the fourth and the sixth. Lucas Montero blasted a solo homer in the eighth inning to increase the Captains lead before Steffan Wilson hit his seventh homer of the season in the bottom of the eighth, but it was not enough.

Joey Mahalic (1-0) allowed three runs on seven hits and fanned five through five innings to get the win. Mercedes (1-2) was taken out after throwing 67 pitches in two innings, and allowed four runs on three hits with four walks and three strikeouts in a losing effort.

The Power fell to 14-23 with the loss and the Captains improved to 24-14 with the win. Three Power players had multi-hit games including Jonathan Lucroy who paced West Virginia with a three-hit performance, coming a triple away from the cycle. Batters 5-9 in the Lake County lineup went 0-23, while batters 1-4 went 7-for-12.

The Power will continue their four game series against Lake County Wednesday night. Left-hander Dan Merklinger (0-2, 9.00) will get the start for the Power and the Captains will counter with left hander Kelvin De La Cruz (2-2, 2.08). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM (6:05 Central).

West Virginia Box Score

Jonathan Lucroy a triple shy of the cycle; nine walks issued by Power pitchers, as Roque Mercedes continues to make the least of his chances; Manager Jeff Isom ejected in the 4th arguing a close play at the plate, the game log seems to indicate...

Final: Huntsville 3, Tennessee (Cubs) 2, 13 innings

This team can do it every which way, superb...

Huntsville Press Release:

Stars Survive and Win Longest Game of the Season

MONEY ONE WIN AWAY FROM MAKING HISTORY

Mat Gamel scored the game-winning run on a throwing error in the 13th inning, as Huntsville outlasted Tennessee 3-2 Tuesday night in the fourth of a five-game series at Smokies Park in Sevierville. The Stars won a season-best fifth straight on the road to improve to 28-11 and push their lead over West Tenn in the North Division to five games, while the Smokies fell to 15-24 and lost for an 11th time in their last 13 home games. The victory moved Stars' manager Don Money into a tie with Brad Fischer, who guided the team in its first three years of existence, for the most wins all-time by a Huntsville manager with 230.

Gamel singled with one out in the 13th against Matt Avery and moved to second base on a single by Matt LaPorta, who had gone hitless in his first five at-bats. Cole Gillespie bounced a ground ball to shortstop that was gloved by a diving Joe Simokaitis, who shoveled the ball to second baseman Nate Spears for the out at second base but his throw to first sailed past Doug Deeds, allowing Gamel to cross the plate with the decisive run.

Juan Sandoval worked around a two-out walk to Tyler Colvin to nail down his second save in as many nights and fourth since joining the Stars. Joe Bateman earned his second win with three shutout frames in relief and has now thrown 10 scoreless innings in his last five outings.

The Smokies scored first for a second straight night when Simokaitis doubled home Ryan Harvey with two outs in the second. James Russell had blanked the Stars on a lone single through the first three frames before Gamel crushed a hanging curve ball for his ninth home run of the year, and fourth in the last six games, to get the game tied.

Chris Errecart's leadoff long ball, his sixth of the season and third in as many games, in the fifth gave Huntsville its first lead of the night but it did not last very long. Stars' starter Brae Wright walked Simokaitis with one out in the bottom of the inning, Spears with two outs and then yielded a base hit to Kyle Reynolds that plated Simokaitis to tie the game.

Russell was lifted in the sixth inning with Alcides Escobar at second base and one out and was replaced by Michael Cooper, who retired LaPorta, walked Gillespie and set down Freddy Parejo to end the frame. Russell was charged with two runs on five hits, walking one and fanning one and was not involved in the decision for a third time in three starts since joining the Smokies.

Wright went six innings, giving up a pair of runs on four hits, while walking three and fanning a season-high seven. Robert Hinton followed with three shutout frames, allowing one hit, walking one and punching out a season-high five.

The series concludes Wednesday morning with left-hander Sam Narron taking the mound against Smokies' right-hander Mitch Atkins. Coverage of the game begins at 10:15 am central time and can be heard locally on SportsRadio 730 WUMP and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com and www.730ump.com.

Huntsville Box Score

Each of the four Stars' pitchers did their job nicely, with Robert Hinton, as he does every so often, reminding us of his talent in particular -- kudos to Joe Bateman and Juan Sandoval; nice to see Matt LaPorta in the lineup after his HBP departure Monday; not sure why Chris Errecart was removed for the 6th inning after his home run in the 5th...

Final: Nashville 5, Las Vegas (Dodgers) 1

Nashville Site Game Summary:

Sounds Finish Road Trip With 5-1 Win In Vegas

LAS VEGAS - The Nashville Sounds wrapped up their road trip with a 5-1 victory over the Las Vegas 51s on Tuesday evening at Cashman Field in the finale of a four-game series.

With the win, Nashville (15-23) finished its West Coast trip with a 5-3 record.

Centerfielder Laynce Nix put the Sounds up 1-0 in the top of the fourth inning when he belted a leadoff solo homer to right off Las Vegas starter Eric Stults. The blast, his fourth of the year, extended Nix's season-best hitting streak to eight games.

The 51s tied it in the bottom of the fifth when John-Ford Griffin led off by belting an 0-1 Richie Gardner offering over the wall in right for his second home run in as many nights, knotting the contest at 1-1.

Nashville jumped back in front with a three-run seventh. Brad Nelson led off with a walk and stole second. Russell Branyan (2-for-3) followed with a single that chased Stults, then stole second to put a pair of runners in scoring position for Eric Munson, who greeted 51s reliever Greg Miller with a two-run single to right that gave the Sounds a 3-1 lead and snapped an 0-for-14 skid for the veteran.

AUDIO: Munson Go-Ahead 2-Run Single

The Sounds made it a 4-1 advantage later in the frame when Abraham Nunez and Brendan Katin executed a double steal, with Katin swiping home on the play.

Shortstop Adam Heether added the final Nashville tally in the top of the ninth when he crushed a 1-1 Matt Riley offering to deep left-center for his third home run of the year.

Gardner (3-1) earned a win in his third straight outing for Nashville by tossing his first quality start of the season. The right-hander allowed one run on three hits over a season-high six innings of action.

Stults (2-4) took the loss after allowing three runs on four hits while fanning eight batters in his six-plus frames for Las Vegas.

After joining the entire Pacific Coast League for an off day on Wednesday, the Sounds return to Greer Stadium on Thursday to begin an eight-game homestand against New Orleans (AAA-Mets) and Memphis (AAA-Cardinals).

Right-hander Mark DiFelice (3-0, 3.91) will make the start for Nashville in Thursday's 7 p.m. series opener. The Zephyrs will counter with right-hander Brian Stokes (4-3, 5.68).

Nashville Box Score

Derrick Turnbow got another chance in the 7th -- popout, walk, walk, ground out -- lifted for Zach Jackson; Brad Nelson continues a phenomenal spring, on base three times, plus the "speedy" Nelson stole his 6th base in ten attempts -- gotta love Frank Kremblas; Luis Pena walked one in a hitless 9th with a four-run lead...

Captains outlast Power 7-4

By Tommy R. Atkinson

Charleston Gazette Staff writer

The West Virginia Power pounded out 11 hits but had very little to show for its efforts in dropping a 7-4 decision Tuesday to the Northern Division-leading Lake County (Ohio) Captains.

A paid crowd of 3,154 attended the South Atlantic League matchup on election night at Appalachian Power Park. Several candidates threw out the first pitches before the game, including Gov. Joe Manchin, who was late in arriving and interrupted Power starter Roque Mercedes' warmup tosses.

The Power showed signs of coming out of its hitting doldrums as Jonathan Lucroy, Steffan Wilson and Eric Fryer each smacked solo home runs. West Virginia (14-23) owns a 4-7 record in its last 11 games and was hitting a meager .250 coming into Tuesday.

"I feel like we're hitting the ball hard and [are] having better at-bats,'' said Lucroy, who finished 3-for-5 with a double and solo homer.

"We've just got to keep playing hard. A hit here, a hit there [and] something falls through. I think we're right there, we've just got to make a break. We just need to get more consistent in hitting the ball hard.''

The Power closed to 4-3 on Lucroy's leadoff solo shot in the bottom of the third but managed just one more run the rest of the way. West Virginia didn't cross the plate again until Wilson's solo round-tripper in the bottom of the eighth.

Lake County relievers Kyle Landis and Garrison Campfield shut down the Power, giving up one earned run on four hits in four innings and striking out seven. Captains starter Joey Mahalic (1-0), just called up from the Cleveland Indians' rookie Gulf Coast League affiliate, allowed three earned runs on seven hits in five innings with five punchouts.

"It's just going to take a little spark to get something good to happen [and] we'll start rolling,'' said Lucroy. "That's all it's going to take.''

Mercedes (1-2) was roughed up in taking the loss, allowing three earned runs on three hits in just two innings. The right-hander needed 67 pitches to get through the first two innings, loading the bases to start the game, then surrendering three runs in the second.

Roman Pena went 3-for-5 with three RBIs for the Captains (24-14) while Dustin Realini knocked in three runs.

The Power will play host to Lake County at 7:05 tonight (6:05 Central) in the third game of the four-game series.

POWER POINTS: First-year Power manager Jeff Isom was ejected in the top of the fourth after arguing with first base umpire Kyle Byrne. Lake County's Lucas Montero was caught in a rundown between second and third base and West Virginia shortstop Brent Brewer appeared to tag Montero out, but Byrne ruled him safe. Isom came out to argue and, as he was returning to the dugout, Byrne tossed him out so Isom returned for a few more words. ... The Power entered Tuesday's play fifth in the 16-team Sally League with 26 homers. ... Lake County has won 15 games on the road, the most in the league.

Power belts three homers, but Captains sail to SAL win

by Jacob Messer

Charleston Daily Mail sportswriter

The West Virginia Power lived up to its nickname Tuesday night, but not even three home runs were enough to knock off the Lake County Captains.

An Election Day crowd of 3,154 watched the home team smack a trio of solo shots out of Appalachian Power Park, but Lake County left Charleston's East End stadium with a 7-4 South Atlantic League baseball victory.

The first-place Captains improved to 24-14. The seventh-place Power dropped to 14-23.

West Virginia had 11 hits -- four more than Lake County -- but couldn't string them together.

"That's the way baseball is," Power catcher Jonathan Lucroy said. "Sometimes, things go your way. Sometimes, they don't. We had a lot of things not go our way."

Left fielder Eric Fryer (his first), Lucroy (his fifth) and first baseman Steffan Wilson (his seventh) hit the Power's home runs in the second, third and eighth innings, respectively.

West Virginia's other run came on a first-inning sacrifice fly by third baseman Zelous Wheeler.

Lucroy was 3-for-5. He came within a triple of hitting for the cycle. His solo shot was his second in as many days. Fryer and Wilson both were 2-for-4.

Shortstop Brent Brewer, second baseman Eric Farris, designated hitter Caleb Gindl and center fielder Lee Haydel each had a single for the Power.

"(Lake County) has the No. 1 pitching staff in the whole league," said Lucroy, who is 9-for-22 with three home runs, four RBI and five runs in his last six games. "So, it's not surprising when we're getting held down like we are. They have some good arms out there throwing.

"When we got runners on base, their pitchers did a good job of keeping the ball down and getting ground balls and striking people out. We just need to get more consistent at hitting the ball hard.

"Hopefully, (tonight) we can put something together."

Lake County tagged West Virginia starter Roque Mercedes for four runs in two innings, sending him to the clubhouse showers earlier than expected.

Mercedes issued a bases-loaded walk to first baseman Dustin Realini in the first, then surrendered a pair of two-out singles that drove in three runs in the second. The first came from right fielder Roman Pena (3-for-5). The second came from Realini (1-for-3 with two walks).

Pena delivered three run-scoring singles against West Virginia -- the others came in the fourth and sixth. Left fielder Lucas Montero (1-for-1 with four walks) added a solo home run in the eighth.

Center fielder and leadoff hitter Adam White (2-for-3) scored four runs for Lake County.

Lake County starter Joey Mahalic (1-0) got the win. He allowed three runs on seven hits while striking out five and walking none in five innings.

Mercedes (1-2) took the loss after he gave up four runs on three hits and four walks in two innings. The Power committed two errors behind Mercedes, who fanned three batters.

West Virginia and Lake County will play the third of their four-game series Wednesday tonight. It will feature a battle of southpaws, with Dan Merklinger (0-2, 9.00) of the Power and Kelvin De La Cruz (2-2, 2.08) of the Captains taking the mound for their Class A clubs.

Power points -- Farris collected his first hit and scored his first run with West Virginia on Tuesday, but he is only 1-for-9 since he joined the club Sunday ... First Base Umpire Kyle Bryne ejected Power Manager Jeff Isom in the fourth for arguing a call made at second base. It was Isom's first ejection this season ... The Captains' No. 1-4 hitters -- White, Montero, Pena and Realini -- were 7-for-12. Their No. 5-9 hitters were 0-for-23.

This is the first time I have done this and I have no clue if this is any good to others or not. This was great game to take your kids to. My two boys and the kid we took with us all got a foul ball and were on the big screen several times. I have a few pics. I will try and get them on here if I can. .

Laporta

  • He just missed the go ahead homer by a couple of feet. That was one of the balls we were able to get. He made all of his plays in left and displayed average arm strength
Gamel
  • His homerun was a shot. The ball jumps off of his bat even on outs. He also made every routine play in the field and one spectacular diving to the line catch that saved the game in the 10th.

Salome

  • He handled the pitches from Wright very well. He took a foul bunt attempt off of his right foot or leg, I am not sure if that is the reason he came out our not. He threw out one base runner on bang-bang play.
Wright
  • The radar gun put him at 72 - 85. This is a slow gun. Just about the same speeds as Inman last year at the same park. The umpire was giving him the low strike and he kept pounding the zone at the knees. His off speed pitches kept most of the Smokies off balance all night.

Brantly

  • He is just a smart baseball player. He looks a lot more comfortable at he plate this year. He has a plan with each at bat and is very patient. He is also very versatile in the field. He caught a bullet to double off one of the Smokies while he was playing first.

Escobar

  • Smooth and fast

Errecart and Gillespie (Bell also goes in this group, but the other two are probably better prospects. )

  • These guys are baseball players. They can hit and field. I would not be surprised to see these guys get a shot in the MLB at sometime..

Hinton

  • Looked very good this night. He was hitting 87-88 on the radar.
