Maybe, Gillespie trying to make me eat my words. I'd feel better if the young guys in A and A+ would pitch better, but Bryson had one of his better outings, I wish I would have been listening, the game log for his 2 runs is curious with a WP and infield hit.

Yeah, it must suck being Chris Errecart in this organization. On the Giants, he'd probably be in the big leagues already. Here, he's just the sixth-best hitter at AA and blocked repeatedly at every conceivable position.

If Escobar keeps improving with the stick Southern League pitchers might start bring the batting practice screen out with them. If Angel is playing Everyone except Escobar and the pitcher has a .800+ OPS (OK technically Brantley is a shade under, but how do you dis a .410 OBP from a lead off guy?)

Huntsville Site Game Summary:

Stars Claim Season-High Fourth Straight Road Win

Homer Happy Huntsville Wins Again
By Brett Pollock / Huntsville Stars

Four different players hit home runs, as Huntsville's power onslaught continued in a 9-7 victory over Tennessee Monday night in the middle of a five-game set at Smokies' Park. The Stars improved to 27-11 overall, climbed to 10-8 on the road and temporarily moved to three and a half games in front of West Tenn in the North Division, while the Smokies fell to 15-23. Huntsville has totaled 31 runs on 43 hits in the first three games of the series.

Tyler Colvin's solo home run with two out in the home first gave the Smokies their first lead of the series, which lasted for an inning and a half. Michael Brantley's run-scoring single in the top of the third tied the game and a Mat Gamel sacrifice fly gave the Stars their first lead at 2-1. However, the Huntsville advantage didn't hold for very long, as Colvin clubbed a three-run home run to right field in the bottom of the frame to give the Smokies a 4-2 edge.

The Stars answered right back in the fourth and tied the game on Cole Gillespie's two-run home run, his seventh of the season, to straightaway center field off starter Mark Holliman. Huntsville then took the lead for good two batters later when Mike Bell belted an 0-2 offering over the wall in left field for his fourth home run, three of which have been hit on the road. Huntsville has now hit 41 long balls in 38 games after hitting only 73 all of last year.

Alcides Escobar led off the fifth with another home run to straight away center field, his third of the season, to make it 6-4 before Chris Errecart blasted a two-run homer to dead center to knock Holliman out of the game after he had allowed eight runs on 10 hits.

Starter David Welch worked around a leadoff double by Doug Deeds in the fourth and a one-out two-bagger by Colvin in the fifth and was lifted after five frames, giving up four runs on nine hits. He won his third straight decision to match teammates Steve Hammond and Sam Narron with his league-high fifth win.

David Johnson retired the side in order in the sixth before giving up three runs in the seventh on a Nate Spears run-scoring triple, a Colvin sacrifice fly and a Jake Fox home run. Joe Bateman took over in the eighth and worked a scoreless inning before Juan Sandoval closed the door with a shutout ninth inning to earn his third save. The Smokies managed 14 hits after being held to just nine combined in the first two games.

The series continues Tuesday night with left-hander Brae Wright taking the mound against Smokies' southpaw James Russell. Coverage of the game begins at 6:00 pm central time and can be heard locally on SportsRadio 730 WUMP and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com and www.730ump.com.

Huntsville Box Score

Hardly David Welch's finest outing, but he'll take the win; Carlos Corporan gave Angel Salome a night off; Alcides Escobar bomb to straight-away center -- yikes, it's contagious; Matt LaPorta stayed on the basepaths and scored after his HBP, then did not return to the field in the bottom of the 5th -- we'll have audio shortly...

Final: Daytona (Cubs) 7, Brevard County 4

Manatees led 4-0 after an inning and a half, then the Cubs' bullpen stymied them for seven innings...

Brevard County Box Score

Josh Butler's line wasn't pretty, but he did manage six innings of work (five runs, four earned); Shawn Ferguson stranded three of Rafael Lluberes' baserunners with just one out in the 7th, saving Lluberes' 10.29 ERA further escalation; Taylor Green singled twice, but also grounded into two double plays, one ending the game representing the tying run; Yohannis Perez, 25 this coming October, sporting a .550 OPS even after reaching twice in this one -- the ballyhoo wasn't justified -- then again, we did most of the ballyhooing, not the Brewers...

Final: Lake County (Indians) 4, West Virginia 2

West Virginia Site Game Summary:

LATE RALLY FALLS SHORT FOR POWER

Charleston, WV - The West Virginia Power had the tying runs on base and the potential winning run at the plate with two outs in the ninth inning of Monday night's game against the Lake County Captains, but Vinnie Pestano got Eric Fryer to groundout as the Power fell short in a 4-2 loss at Appalachian Power Park.

West Virginia took the early lead in the bottom of the first inning on Jonathan Lucroy's solo home run. It was his fourth in the last two weeks. Rob Bryson held the Captains hitless through the first three innings, but the Captains recorded three straight hits and scored twice in the fourth to take the lead. Matt Brown's base hit scored Roman Pena and Brown scored later in the inning on Jeff Hehr's sacrifice fly.

Lake County added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh. Hehr scored the first run on Ron Rivas's sacrifice fly. With Doug Pickens at third and Dustin Realini at first, Realini stole second base and on the throw to second, Pickens stole home to plate their final run of the game. Steffan Wilson scored in the ninth inning on Brent Brewer's two-out RBI single.

Ryan Miller (6-0) allowed a run on two hits and struck out six through six innings to get the victory. Bryson (0-2) struck out four and allowed two runs on three hits over five innings in a losing effort. Pestano (10) allowed a run on two hits in the ninth inning to snag the save.

The Power fell to 14-22 with the loss and the Captains improved to 23-14 with the win. Jonathan Lucroy reached multiple times for the Power, going 1-for-2 with the solo homer and he walked twice. Amaury Rivas allowed a pair of runs on three hits and struck out four in four innings of relief.

The Power will continue their four game series against Lake County Tuesday night. Right-hander Roque Mercedes (1-1, 6.12) will get the start for the Power and the Captains will counter with right hander Santo Frias (1-1, 6.94). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM (6:05 Central).

West Virginia Box Score

Eric Farris, 0-for-4 with one K in his Power debut, batting 2nd behind Lee Haydel (also 0-for-4); Brent Brewer hitting 7th with Farris in the lineup; West Virginia offensive production has been stymied in part because two traditional power spots, left field and first base, are almost always occupying the 8th and 9th slots in the lineup, and not with glory; Roque Mercedes pitches again Tuesday -- it seems like his spot comes up every other day...

West Virginia Game Log

Oh my, Caleb Gindl, like Matt LaPorta, also HBP, although he was hit in the 4th, and did not leave until the 9th...

West Virginia Pre-Game Interview with Pitching Coach John Curtis

Nearly eight minutes of very informative discussion on Amaury Rivas, Mike Ramlow, Roque Mercedes, etc.; highly suggested, but we know you listen to all our audio links; make sure you're on the WSWW archive of May 12th, then go to the 37:30 minute mark...

By the way, Caleb Gindl was also hit in the elbow on an up-and-in pitch, not clear if his departure was related to that five innings later -- nothing on the audio to indicate a problem, so don't worry for now...

Final: Las Vegas (Dodgers) 4, Nashville 1

Nashville Site Game Summary:

Sounds Lose To Las Vegas, 4-1

LAS VEGAS - The Nashville Sounds were dealt a 4-1 defeat by the Las Vegas 51s on Monday evening at Cashman Field.

The Sounds took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning when Brad Nelson, who opened the frame with a walk, scored on shortstop Ozzie Chavez's two-out RBI single to left off 51s starter Jon Meloan.

Las Vegas jumped ahead, 2-1, in the bottom of the seventh when John-Ford Griffin belted a two-run homer off Nashville reliever Steve Bray, the outfielder's first roundtripper of the season. Xavier Paul, who preceded Griffin with a single, scored on the blast.

Derrick Turnbow made his Sounds debut in the bottom of the eighth inning and got off to a rough start. After retiring the first batter of the frame on a groundout, the 51s loaded the bases against him with a single sandwiched between a pair of walks. Turnbow then walked Danny Ardoin to force in a run, increasing the Vegas lead to 3-1, and was removed. The right-hander threw 25 pitches, only nine for strikes, and was charged with two runs in his one-third of an inning.

Erasmo Ramirez inherited a one-out, bases-loaded jam and permitted one additional run to score on a Paul fielder's choice groundout, making it a 4-1 contest.

After plating their lone run in the second, the Sounds put runners into scoring position in each of the next five frames but were unable to bring any plateward, including a pair of missed opportunities with a runner on third and only one out. Nashville finished just 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position on the evening.

51s reliever Ramon Troncoso (2-0) picked up the victory with two scoreless frames of work. Brian Falkenborg worked a perfect ninth to notch his fifth save of the year.

Bray (0-3) took the loss after allowing the go-ahead homer in his 1 1/3 innings.

Neither starting pitcher took a decision in the contest despite a pair of solid efforts.

Sounds starter Chris Narveson held the 51s hitless through five frames before Angel Chavez led off the sixth with a single. Narveson finished with 5 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing only that one hit but also walking five batters. He departed after throwing 95 pitches (53 strikes).

Meloan also turned in a solid outing, surrendering one run on five hits while striking out six batters in his six innings of action.

Nashville outfielder Laynce Nix went 1-for-4 on the evening to extend the club's longest active hitting streak to seven games, his best effort of the season.

The teams wrap up the series with a 9:05 p.m. CT finale on Tuesday evening. Right-hander Richie Gardner (2-1, 5.40) will toe the rubber for the Sounds to face Las Vegas left-hander Eric Stults (2-3, 4.28).
