Recurring dreams

gypcasino
Anyone else have the same type of dream on a regular basis? I've got a few that show up pretty often. The one I probably have the most is where I'm at a sporting event, usually a baseball game (but last night it was a basketball game) and the section of seats I'm sitting in has either no view at all of the field of play or else is at least 90% obstructed. Sometimes it will be a Brewers game and I'll be sitting in bleachers that are out in the concourse or pointed away from the field. The one last night was a Bucks game and I was standing along a railing in an upper level and all I could see was a sliver of the court behind one of the baskets. The venue always changes from dream to dream. Like the Brewers might be playing but it's usually not Miller Park but some generic stadium that I'm not familiar with in my waking life.

I've been chased by a fox in a dream I've probably had 500 times since I was little. I've also had a dream that it's late in the semester and I forgot to drop a class or two once a month the last decade plus.

Over time, I've had three types of recurring dreams, none of them particularly happy.

1. The tornado dream: I'm caught somewhere that I perceive to be unsafe (often outdoors), it's looking stormy, then the sirens go off and oh no! Tornado! Or sometimes multiple vortex tornadoes. I never reach the point where a storm actually hits me, but I wake up with heart a-pounding. This has recurred for me since about age 10 (a good 30+ years).

2. The elevator dream. I get in an elevator and one way or another, it doesn't do what I want. It goes up when I want to go down or vice versa; or it malfunctions by getting stuck or going sideways. Yeah, sideways. Oddly, my dream elevators don't tend to plummet.

My workplace has somewhat intimidating elevators - mostly due to their extreme age. Strangely, although I never had elevator dreams before I started at this workplace, my elevator dreams never take place in the workplace elevators. Instead, I cover the workplace in...

3. The workplace dream. I've been at the same workplace (a library) for 21 of the last 23 years, and my workplace dreams follow one script: It's late in the workday, almost closing time, there are a ton of visitors and all my coworkers are gone. I'm the only one left to help them. I try to close and there are too many visitors - I can't get them to leave. I even dreamt once that we had a special late night session where we stayed open until 2:00 AM. A group of old ladies showed up at 2:00 AM saying they wanted to just check on a few things. (We have a major genealogy collection, so we see a lot of elderly visitors.)

I mentioned this to my supervisor once and he said "Ah, an anxiety dream!" I thought about saying "well, duh" but thought better of it. This dream doesn't scare me, but I wake up kind of mad because I feel like I let work get to me again.

Oddly, I have hardly ever had the "late in the semester" dream cited by dadofandrew - although it's a classic, and I was certainly in school long enough to qualify for it.

I have the school dream pretty often also. Either high school or college. It's always stuff like not being able to recall a locker combination, missing a large portion of the year and coming back just in time for a test, not being able to recall my class schedule, wandering around the halls because I forgot which room a class is in. Plus in the college ones sometimes I'll be moving to a different off campus house in the middle of the school year and I won't be sure which house I'm supposed to be moving into.

Interesting dreams.

I'm odd in that I don't remember my dreams. I know I have them sometimes, but I have no idea what they're about.

"His whole life is a fantasy camp. People should plunk down $2000 to live like him for a week. Sleep, do nothing, fall ass-backwards into money, mooch food off your neighbors and have sex without dating... THAT'S a fantasy camp."

I think fairly recently I've begun re-having similar dreams that I had a lot when I was younger- it's always a chase inside a building (often a house) and I always have to exit through a locked door. I don't think I've ever been caught by the chaser, and as soon as I get through the door it's home free (since apparently they can't open doors or something).

I often have the reversal as well- I'm at a home (usually my parents), and have to close and lock all the doors to keep something out, but there's always a door or something that won't close or lock properly.

Strange I guess, but I'm fortunate enough to never have had the elevator or airplane dreams that some people I know have regularly. But I have being chased dreams very regularly in some form.

I have a recurring dream where this 5 foot squirrel holding a shot gun and smoking a cigarette has his back to me. He looks over his shoulder and yells "Pull!" Then these chipmunks scatter around by machines and little brewerjamie15's come zipping out all over the place flying up in the air. The squirrel goes hay wire and just starts a-blastin'.

I scream at him to knock it off, he chirps "No." and then calls me a dirty name.

So, I hop onto an Ostrich named Jim and he hurries me to the chipmunks. I chase them around with a vacuum cleaner that makes no suction sound. Instead, it plays Lionel Richie tunes at an ungodly volume.

I look up in the air from time to time to see if the little me's are ok, they smile, and salute. I go back to chasing the chipmunks while the squirrel is still blastin' but missing everything. Every time I suck up a chipmunk, the song coming from the vacuum changes. Lionel Richie, Oingo Boingo, Joan Baiez, then finally to Iron Maiden after I get the last chipmunk sucked up.

Jim the Ostrich is wearing a shirt that imitates the markings of a cow, and a football helmet with antlers sticking out of it is on his head. He asks me if I'm ready, I say yes, so I hop on his back and we go drink tea with a sloth named Keith. Keith is nice, but I don't know why I'm there unless it's to get key's the Leopard who wears buck skin pants lost in my other dream.

Any way, I finally leave the tea party and walk the ten feet to where the squirrel is still shooting. However, the little brewerjamie15's that were flying through the air saluting everything are no longer there. They are on the other side of the field playing on a sea saw.

I ask the squirrel just what the hell he thinks he's doing, and he says "Target Practice." I tell him he never hits anything and then take the gun away which by now, has turned into an ice cream cone. The squirrel who has not told me his name, simply says: "The reason I never hit anything is because I have no fingers to pull the trigger or steady the gun. Besides, chocolate shoots better than strawberry anyhow."

Now here's the weird part. I'm not wearing any shoes through the entire dream. Isn't that weird?

-I used to have a neat-o signature, but it got erased.

I don't have any recurring dreams, but I do fly quite often in my dreams. I love it when I realize that it is a dream, then I can control the dream. Do things I can't do in real life.

I will have the same theme in some dreams. For example, I was in the UW Marching Band. I have a dream that I show up the day of a game and am thrown on the field without any music, practice, or know where I should go. This same theme comes up in other dreams where I will show up for an exam without studying, or show up for work without knowing I had a meeting that day.

I've had the work dreams, show up and everybody is in the weeds and no one speaks English. I used to have dreams I was falling and would wake up right before I hit the ground. I wonder if I hit the ground will I never wake up.

I use to have those academia based dreams, but got over it years ago.

Now if anything, I have visions of James Gandolfini or Michael Imperioli chasing me down. I try to outrun them, but it seems I'm never fully safe. Gotta stop watching those Sopranos episodes, luckily only seven more to go.

I experience the school dreams quite a bit...usually its that I dreamt I overslept an exam or final, and the repercussions that follow afterwards. It's like I miss something, and then any possible scenario that could ever play out following it happens (like becoming homeless, lots of other things etc.)

For the most part, I don't really remember my dreams, but they usually give me this odd feeling of deja vu. Every once in a while, I'll have something unimportant happen to me like getting a can of soup or getting hit in football or a couple of words in a conversation, and when it happens I'll realize that it happened in a dream that I had. It's really weird and it's never anything significant, but if I actually remember a really horrible dream, it usually makes me worry a little.

Anyone else have this happen to them?

That exact same thing happens to me quite frequently. So many times I'll be having a pretty meaningless conversation, and it's almost like I know how it's going to end cause I've had it. A few months ago, I had a dream that my friend and his girlfriend of about a year broke up (I have no idea why, I hadn't seen either of them in a few months.) They broke up like a week after that. Not too long after that I had a dream that a couple of my friends died and the same kid from the other dream was one of them. It was probably irrational for me to be at least a little freaked about it, but if something happened to them I think I'd become some sort of fortune teller http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

I no longer remember any of my dreams. Sometimes I can remember them right when I wake up but every minute that passes I lose more of it. When I was in grade school though I had a dream about killer bees that was too be continued, and then the next night it said Part 2 and I was trying to get away from bees that could break through buildings again.

I have many of the same dreams. The tornado dream that Hawing describes is very familiar. Like her I always see one or multiple tornadoes off in the distance--these dreams are often very vivid. They also have the fun element of having trouble getting to the basement or getting there and realizing a loved one or a pet hasn't made it yet and having to go back out and get them.

The forgetting I signed up for a college class, or being unable overcome 1001 insignificant annoying little obstacles to get somewhere or accomplish something is very common for me as well.

I wonder about dreams that reoccur for so many people...

While I'm not particularly glad that greeg35 also has tornado dreams, I take some comfort in not being the only one with them.

Just before one of the cats woke me up today, I was dreaming that our staff training session at work was interrupted by a tornado warning and we all had to go to the basement of the building we were in. Unfortunately, it had a huge skylight window; but fortunately, I woke up before seeing any funnel clouds this time.

I wonder if it was this thread that prompted my mind to combine two of my big three recurring dream themes.
