Jacque Jones?

Jones hit .346 in August and September last year and drove in 37 runs in those two months. He might have been the difference that got the Cubs past the Brewers. Granted he was off to a very slow start in Detroit but the guy has always been streaky. I've always defended Gwynn, but I'm not so sure I wouldn't prefer Jones. It's hard to believe he's lost it that fast.

If Gwynn needs to play more, Jones would be a nice Gross like guy to PH and such. He hits RHP's nicely, but has always sucked versus lefties, but teams seem to ignore that little nugget of fact. He's not a real good defensive CF, but passable.

I debated starting a thread on Jones. I'm not familiar with his situation in Detroit. Was he starting or coming off the bench? I think he could be a valuable 4th outfielder. He certainly has more power than Gwynn, but again, going off memory, seems to strike out a lot. We seem to have a lot of guys who strikeout a lot. But it wouldn't hurt to take a look.

Jones reminds me a bit of Geoff Jenkins. He won't hit lefties well; he's too impatient sometimes at the plate and you'll wonder what he's swinging at; he'll go through some terrible slumps; yet there's times where his bat will come alive and he'll hit real well. He's above-average defensively too. I watched him for a few years in MN and unless he's totally lost it, he's a decent player.

I think in Detroit, he was supposed to be platooning with Thames in LF. The Tigers just forgot that their pitching is the real problem, and were too impatient waiting for him to come around. Plus Sheffield wanted to play in the outfield again for some reason.

I though about the possibility of Jones yesterday as well, but not as a signing after being let go by Detroit. Rather as a match with Turnbow in a "change of scenery trade". Assuming with the DFA from Detroit, they would have 10 days to try to work out a deal before releasing him.

Don't know if he has ever done much as a pinch hitter (his only real spot on Brewers roster), but I believe the Cubs are still paying part of this year's salary so that makes him more appealing http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
