Brevard County Press Release:

Manatees' Darren Ford Ties FSL Stolen Base Record

Brevard County's Darren Ford stole five bases Monday night, tying a Florida State League record, but the Manatees lost to Clearwater, 7-6. Amazingly, Ford accomplished the feat without a single hit in the game. After reaching on an error in the first inning, Ford stole second and third base, but was left stranded. Ford reached base on a fielder's choice in the third inning, then promptly stole second base, but again he was left on base. In the sixth inning, Ford led off with a walk, and then stole second and third base again. This time he was rewarded for his efforts, as Chuck Caufield's two-out single brought him home, igniting a five-run rally. Ford had two more chances to reach base and make a run at the record, but was called out on strikes on both occasions. After Monday's stolen base bonanza, Ford now has an FSL-leading 19 stolen bases on the season, six ahead of his nearest competitor. He will attempt to increase his lead tonight in Clearwater, as the Manatees take on the Threshers.

Final: Delmarva (Orioles) 5, West Virginia 3

West Virginia Site Game Summary:

TWO-OUT HOMERS PUT POWER DOWN

West Virginia Power had the lead twice in Tuesday's game against the Delmarva Shorebirds, but Delmarva erased a pair of one-run deficits and homered twice with two outs in the seventh inning to defeat the Power 5-3.

West Virginia took the lead in the top of the second on Kurt Crowell's first of two RBI singles on the afternoon. In the bottom of the inning Kieron Pope reached on an error to bring in the tying run. The Shorebirds took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the third on Joe Mahoney's sacrifice fly that plated Matt Angle.

Jonathan Lucroy began the fourth inning with a double and he scored on Zelous Wheeler's second double of the game. Tied at 2-2 in the top of the seventh, Crowell ripped a single into left field to score Steffan Wilson. In the bottom of the seventh Anthony Martinez homered with two outs to tie the game. Wally Crancer walked on four pitches before Kieron Pope hit a two-run shot to put Delmarva ahead for good.

Brian Parker (5-0) allowed a run on two hits over an inning and two-thirds of relief. Corey Frerichs (0-4) was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs on four hits over an inning and two-thirds. Mick Mattaliano (7) got the save while holding the Power scoreless through an inning and a third. Roque Mercedes held the Shorebirds to two runs on seven hits over five innings.

The Power fell to 12-20 with the loss and the Shorebirds improved to 18-14 with the win. Three Power players had multi-hit games including Crowell who paced the Power with a 3-for-4 performance. Lucroy and Wheeler chipped in with two hits apiece. Delmarva manager Ramon Sambo and second baseman Ryan Adams were both ejected in the bottom of the second for arguing balls and strikes.

The Power are off on Wednesday but will begin a four game series with the Hagerstown Suns at Appalachian Power Park on Thursday night. Right-hander Evan Anundsen (2-3, 4.45) will get the start for the Power and the Suns will counter with right hander Jeff Mandel (2-1, 4.88). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM (6:05 Central).

West Virginia Box Score

There's just no "put me on your back" player on this squad to carry them through any type of meaningful consistently good stretch of play...

West Virginia Game Log

The 8th inning was just hideous for the Power -- 2nd and 3rd, nobody out -- you guessed it, nada; then, listening in, it was just an abhorrent three-pitch bunt attempt strikeout in a key situation in the 9th for David Fonseca -- you've got to lay it down when you're the utility infielder...

Last time we called up a good bat no field 3b it seemed to work out pretty well.. also it seemed to work out well calling up our stud hitter to dh the AL games.. just saying we should learn from the past..

I think Laporta would get the call, but I'd rather see Gamel, get some more left handed power in the lineup.

Is there a better 3-4 combo in the minors right now than Gamel and LaPorta? This is ridiculous.

Honestly, I wonder if there is a better lineup than Hunstville. They have legit prospects up and down that lineup. Obviously, that is headed by Gamel and LaPorta, but with Escobar, Brantley, Salome, Errecart, and Gillespie that lineup is crazy good. The Stars are a beacon of hope with the big league club struggling.

Sounds Open Road Trip With 4-1 Victory

TUCSON, Ariz. - The Nashville Sounds opened their road trip on a high note on Tuesday evening at Tucson Electric Park, scoring a 4-1 victory over the host Sidewinders.

Nashville starter Jeff Weaver engaged Tucson right-hander Yusmeiro Petit in a pitcher's duel through the first half of the game.

Neither team advanced a runner past second base until Sidewinders left fielder Trent Oeltjen led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a deep solo home run onto the berm in right-center on Weaver's initial pitch of the frame, his first longball of the year.

Petit exited after five scoreless innings of four-hit ball and Nashville took immediate advantage of his departure.

The Sounds grabbed a 2-1 lead with a pair of runs against Tucson reliever Abe Woody in the top of the sixth. Hernan Iribarren (3-for-5) led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt before Vinny Rottino delivered a game-tying triple to right. Rottino scored the go-ahead run during the next at-bat, scampering home on a Woody wild pitch.

Brendan Katin gave Nashville some breathing room in the ninth with a two-run home run to center off Sidewinders reliever Leo Rosales, his fourth roundtripper of the year. Adam Heether, who preceded Katin with an inning-opening single, scored on the blast and has hit safely in 10 of his last 12 contests.

Weaver (1-1) allowed one run on four hits in his seven innings of work to earn his first victory of the season.

Erasmo Ramirez followed with a scoreless eighth before Luis Pena took over in the ninth and retired the side in order to notch his third save of the year.

Woody (1-1) absorbed the loss after allowing two runs on three hits in his lone frame of action.

Sounds shortstop Ozzie Chavez went 0-for-4 on the evening to snap his season-best hitting streak at five games.

The teams continue the series with another 8:30 p.m. CT meeting on Wednesday evening. Left-hander Chris Narveson (1-4, 4.11) will make the start for the Sounds and face Sidewinders southpaw Evan MacLane (1-2, 7.45).

Nashville Box Score
Jeff Weaver's performance sure to grab folks attention in the organization; nice to see Luis Pena with a clean inning; Hernan Iribarren with three singles, only three of 25 base hits for extra bases; Russell Branyan simply has not hit a rough patch yet...
