Gallardo injury: Has torn ACL, placed on 15-day DL; Bush recalled (reply #32)

Two things.

1. Yesterday Yo was "Iron Man" for staying in the game. "Take that, Sheets" etc. Today, it's "let's find a scapegoat, even better if it can somehow be Yost". It was an accident, pure and simple. An accident, which, with the benefit of an MRI, is worse than feared at first.

2. The 1st place St.Louis Cardinals are without their top 2 guys in Carpenter and Mulder and seem to have won a few games without them. This season is NOT over, it's just gonna be a little harder. No amount of "what if's" are going to change the situation. We just have to play the cards we are dealt.

...oh, I thought of another.

"Over? Nothing is over until WE decide it is. Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?"

I'll be interested to know what, if anything, they have to say about Yo's MCL or LCL.

You have three ligaments in your knee. The LCL is the outside, the ACL is the inside and the MCL is the inside. In general terms, the two outside are protectors for the inside. I played soccer for 23 years and I've torn my left MCL twice. As a general rule, you won't do damage to the ACL without having down damage to the other two. You have to strain/stretch/tear one of those to allow the leg the looseness it need to bend enough to do damage to the ACL.

Based on my limited knowledge of ACL's, if I'm not mistaken, if the pain just went away, it is a complete tear. I had a good friend tear his ACL in high school. Doctor told him it still would have hurt like crazy if it was a partial tear, but the pain subsides quickly, and temporarily, during a full tear.

Every body is different, but this is somewhat similar to my experience. I shredded my ACL in high school, and I couldn't even stand on it right away. After a few hours, my body did whatever it needed to do to adapt, and I was able to walk with a limp. I just thought I had tweaked it, and didn't do anything about it.

A week later, my parents noticed that the swelling hadn't completely gone down and we went to a doctor, only to find that I had done the unusual, completely torn the ligament, like a rubber band that had been stretched too far. At that point the doctor said I had two options, have a ligament replacement surgery and go through a few months of rehab and wearing a brace for a year, or do nothing and just let the body heal, although it would never be fully healthy, and I would be more likely to suffer knee injuries if I did anything strenuous.

Of course, this was back in 1986, so it probably has no relevance to medicine of today.

They knew that going into the season though, and made some adjustments to their roster prior to April.

Brilliant! -- Thanks for that.

This is the single most devastating injury I can think of as a sports fan in my life.

As far as the Brewers are concerned, this is at the top. But the announcement out of nowhere that Sterling Sharpe would have to retire was way more devastating. Gallardo will be back.

sorry if a post similar to this has already been made. and i also am not a huge stat guy like soem of you are, so dont jump all over me if i project something that you dont agree with.

yovanni at the most would have made what, 28 more starts? of those 28 starts (and being optimistic) he might have gotten 14 wins, have about 6 losses, and maybe 8 NDs. and thats gotta be an optimistic projection based on his record last year plus the fact that 15 wins is probably the most we could have expected Yovanni to get after missing the first 3 weeks of the season.

now replace gallardo with bush and give Bush 28 starts. based on his history, bush might win 10, lose 10, and have 8 NDs. and thats if dave bush DOESNT improve, which he very well could.

thats 14 wins compared to 10. so at the most, i see this as about a 4 game injury, and thats IF gallardo is out for the rest of the year and IF bush doesn't improve.

that perspective makes me feel about 10% better about this season. i am now up to 20%

Mulder hasn't pitched effectively since 2005. Carpenter was out all of last year. If a team has a year or 3, they can recover, but the Brewers don't have that luxury. I've said it a million times, you can replace 4th and 5th starters easily but no matter how much "starter depth" a team has if a one or a two goes down, you are in trouble. They are the most irreplaceable guys on the team. Nobody has aces or number 2 starters ready to take over.

Not only do the remaining guys have to be sharp, the offense needs to start clubbing people, not playing all these nail biters.

calling out Johnson for Yo's injury reminds me of Albert Belle elbowing Vina when Belle was with the White Sox. now THAT was pretty much done to injure or at least hurt Vina. there's no way i see Johnson trying to hurt anyone. bad slide, bad angle, whatever--that's just players being players.

"Wow, some Brewers fan on the ESPN boards is suggesting a TGJ/Yo for Peavy trade"

if you've ever worked fast food, you know those guys who buy a cookie with a $20 bill, then try to confuse you with the change, maybe making themselves $20 in the process. We need one of those guys to try it out on San Diego's GM and maybe we could get Peavy FOR FREE!

RLuz (who else but our stathead voice of reason) already posted this and it makes me feel better too, if only somewhat since I think we're really gonna need those four wins to make the playoffs. Even then it will really hurt to not have him in a five game series.

That said, if we're still in it in July (and I believe we will be), I could see us making a big trade for another arm, which improves those numbers by a win or two even.

Or who knows, maybe we could get some young-stud version of Bill Simmons' Patrick Ewing Theory here (please please please)

I just hope the rest of the staff doesn't use this injury as a chance to suck like they did when Sheets went down last year. I hope this doesn't mess with the team's heads, at least when they are on the field.

I said this before and I will say it again: Johnson slid outside the box at first base. That is not hustle that is being stupid and is illegal. Even if they missed the tag he would have been out because of that. Shouldn't have happened if he wasn't being stupid.

This was a dirty play and he should pay for it with a McClung fastball in the next series!

Why should some innocent bystander have to pay the price?

Seriously, the dirtiest thing I saw in the series was when Braun cleated Theriot at 2b.

He wasn't an innocent bystander. Sure he probably did mean to hurt him, but many people get hurt when someone decides to do something stupid. Reed Johnson had no chance of being safe and made a stupid move.

Reed Johnson was barely tagged out on the play, with Prince just geting a piece of his foot. As an umpire, Reed Johnson would not have been called out for leaving the basepath, as he was within the limits. Kudos to Reed Johnson for his hustle.

I seriously doubt he would have been called out for leaving the baseline if the tag was missed. Either way I'm done debate this silly argument--no value in it.

The Brewers staff as it is currently constructed is better then the current Cardinals staff, and yet they seem to be getting done with a bunch of nobodies. No reason the brewer staff can't get it done, with fewer nobodies then the Cardinals.

Not sure why, but I feel strangely sanguine after this news. And this little scene from Ghostbusters keeps playing in my head:

Dr. Peter Venkman: For whatever reasons, Ray, call it... fate, call it luck, call it karma, I believe everything happens for a reason. I believe that we were destined to get thrown outta this dump.
Dr. Raymond Stantz: For what purpose?
Dr. Peter Venkman: To go into business for ourselves. [Takes a swig of schnapps]
Dr. Raymond Stantz: This ecto-containment unit that Spengler and I talked about is going to take a load of bread to capitalize. Where are we going to get the money?
Dr. Peter Venkman: [Takes another swig] I don't know, Ray. I don't know.
I feel like Venkman. I have no idea what we're gonna do, but I'm stupidly confident. Now, excuse me while I go take another swig...
