Padres article mentions Tony Gwynn Jr

I would imagine Gwynn for Maddux would be enough.

But no way does Maddux get traded before July. The Padres have to make sure they are out of it before they start selling off assets. If they are however, that trade makes a lot of sense for both teams.

(Not that Maddux would be great. But he would at least give respectable starts a la Suppan)

Maddux is much better than Suppan, he's a clear 2/3 type pitcher. Maddux's FIPs 2005 4.06, 2006 3.80, 2007 3.58, 2008 3.75. Now part of that is likely due to park effect, but he'd be around a 4 ERA type. Which is also why if it was any team besides the Padres Gwynn wouldn't be close to enough since Maddux's contract isn't bad at all.

Jake Peavy on Greg Maddux -

"He can help somebody. It sucks that this is probably the last year of his career and he's got to sit here and be a part of this and have (this be) the last thing he remembers in baseball -- if this thing doesn't turn."

At this point given that Maddux is still good so I wouldn't be surprised if he tried to get a 400th win. I don't think he can, but it is within reach with 2 additional years.

even if he gets 10 more wins this season, it would take him at least 3 more to get the next 40.

I concur with some of the posters about Maddux. I think this would be one of the better pick ups that could be done to solidify the rotation. He would probably accept the trade here to pair with his brother, the Brewers can compete and he could be instrumental in that, and I think we have the goods that the Padres want in Gwynn, Jr.

Attanasio will have to open the pocket book, but this would be a nice move. Maybe the young arms of Bush, Villy, and Parra, could benefit from being in the clubhouse with one of the best pitchers ever to play this game.

I certainly hope Melvin is at least talking to the Padres. It makes just too much sense. However, I don't feel he would be available now, but in another month or so, and the Brewers ship may have sunk by then, if Parra, Bush and Villy can't figure out how to get to the 7th inning.....

On the Braves website, their beat writer speculated that the Braves could possibly bring back Maddux, and mentions that the Padres probably wouldn't ask for any of the Braves top five prospects.

If that's the case, Gwynn for Maddux straight up could be had.

Peavy going to the DL, things getting dire in SD, let's do this Doug

I was thinking about this as well once I saw Peavy was going to the DL. San Diego's season is done and Maddux is a perfect fit for us. Gwynn doesn't really have a future with our club with guys like LaPorta, Brantley and Gillespie coming up. This would be a great trade and we need to do it soon before we fall too far back.

Gallardo is done for the year.

The Brewers might be sellers just like the Padres. I just don't think Maddux would be enough for us to make the playoffs.

Sheets, Maddux, Gallardo = Awesome

Sheets, Maddux, Suppan = Average

Agreed, realistically we are sellers (not that we give up). Like about 15 other teams that thought they'd have a shot to the end, we still have that slight chance of getting really hot bats and pitching above where we really should for the next several months. But realistically, we should be sellers. Somehow, given how Doug has handled the past couple of years, I doubt he sees this.

Ask me in a month whether the brewers will be buyers or sellers at the deadline. way too early to know. It will probably be too early, even then, to be out of the playoff race.

Per article on Yahoo, Maddux has a full no trade clause, I doubt he waives it to come to Milwaukee.

Why wouldn't he want to come to Milwaukee? We will be contenders at least for the wild card while San Diego will be far out of it. The brother connection might help as well. There will probably be other teams trying to get him so if that was your reason I guess he could just hold out for the team he really wants to go to and that makes sense

Thanks for the info, I didn't know that, you think Maddux might want to go to a team that has a shot at the WS or does he want to go hang with his bro? Why didn't he just sign with us then?

San Diego missed the playoffs by a game last year. Actually, they tied Colorado and lost the one game playoff. He's there because they were supposed to be better than this. Since, they are 13 games under .500, I think he might be up to switching teams. Now again there might be other teams who have better shots at the playoffs who might look to get him too, but I would think we have a shot

I know Cubs fans want the guy, too...they even have their own TGJ in Matt Murton, who they say Towers has lusted after as well.

I don't think adding Maddux would make it an amazing rotation, or maybe even an equal replacement for Yo at this point, but you can bet I'd rather see him out there every fifth day than Seth McClung.
