Padres article mentions Tony Gwynn Jr

Padres looking for help in center field

The San Diego Padres currently have Jim Edmonds patrolling center field, but it is no secret that they would like to get younger at the position, reports the San Diego Union-Tribune.

The Padres have explored numerous trade options, including Felix Pie of the Chicago Cubs, Jeremy Reed who was demoted to the minors by the Seattle Mariners, Tony Gwynn Jr. of the Milwaukee Brewers and Coco Crisp of the Boston Red Sox.

The Cubs have been keeping an eye on Padres' shortstop Khalil Greene and Felix Pie has been losing playing time to Reed Johnson, so the potential is there for a deal. Boston, however, appears to be asking for too much (Padres' top prospect Chase Headley) in return for Coco Crisp.

Two of Thatcher, Inman, Garrison?

Ha, I just came onto this thread to post the same thing. I was gonna say give us Inman back for Gwynn.

The Sox are living in a dream world asking for Headley in exchange for Crisp. Perhaps this should be in the trade forum?

If I had Braun's pee in my fridge I'd tell everybody.

....or would it be better to wait around the All-Star break to trade Gwynn when we (hopefully) would be running for the postseason and would have a better idea what our needs might be.

I would not take any of the 3 back for Gwynn, but a young SP from the minors would be enough IMO.

why? i havent been following inman's stats since we traded him, has he tanked? if yost is going to entertain trade offers for gwynn he should at least inquire about some of their best prospect whether or not they were once in our organization or not.

To me, while Gwynn is useful to the Brewers, he just doesn't really have a solid place on the team. With Cameron back, he's going to be limited to late game substitutions, or being used as a pinch batter/runner. Getting a young pitcher like a Will Inman back for him would be enough, IMO.

You guys really think they would trade Gwynn now?

I'm not so sure, especially after already trading Gross.

I would hope if this organization can get something of value (inman), they would consider it. Hart and Kapler can play center if something happens to Cameron. Counsell and Gwynn are similar hitters. Gwynn will hit for a better average (thus slug more), but Counsell has more defensive versatility and less perceived value around the league. Nelson (or Branyan) would add a different dimension (power vs. a righty) to the bench.

Counsell: OBP/SLUG

Bill James .331/.318 CHONE .330/.330 Marcel .328/.350 ZiPS .307/.315

Gwynn: OBP/SLUG

Bill James .329/.335 CHONE .320/.380 Marcel .331/.388 ZiPS .325/.328

Wow, you certainly haven't followed Inman then. From everything I've read/heard/seen, he's been a beast in AA San Antonio so far.

While I wouldn't agree with not taking Inman back for Gwynn, just because he's had success in AA the second time around(though he's still very young) doesn't mean that much to me as he still is rather limited in what type of ceiling he has.

Again, I'd certainly take him back for Gwynn, but I just don't have as high an opinion of him as it appears others on this forum do, and was very much in favor of dealing him last year. Though, to be fair, that was partially due to a fear that he may be exposed once he reached AA, and he seems to have found a remedy to that situation.

Gwynn is 100% expendable, especially with Irabarren making the switch to CF and Laporta in the wings and Gamel continuing to field with a frying pan in AA. If the Cubs asked for Headly for Pie and were rightfully turned down, I wonder if Gwynn and Hall could get Headley. I'd take Gwynn of Kouzmanoff as well.

I think its time for the Crew to really look into Greg Maddux. Yes, he is over the hill, but he really knows how to pitch. The nice thing abotu Maddux is you dont have to worry about resigning him because he is sure to retire after the year. So he wont be blocking any of our guys from the rotation. He can teach quite a bit and it would Appeal to Mike Maddux.

13 wins for 20 seasons in a row, 17 gold gloves - he might very well be watching the sun set on his career, but there is too much baseball in this guy for our young team not to have a spot for him right now. I think he would waive his no trade clause to come help his brother out as well.

Except I doubt he'd be available until July. The problem is that while the Padres have stunk, they expected to at least contend for teh Wild Card this season. Its hard to jettison everything after one month. Right now you have to focus on bad teams that pretty much knew they are bad and are going to stay that way. So no Mariners or Padres or Reds but maybe KC, Pittsburgh, Washington, Texas, and San Francisco.
