I quit checking the WV box score last week hoping I was the one jinxing them... it's been working, I haven't looked at Brewer, Gindl, etc at all... but sneaky Battlekow and his creepy pic almost got me to break discipline today.

 

There's been lots of interesting happenings at the plate in Nashville this season thus far, I've been so desentized by Nelson that I keep waitng for the bottom to fall out, but the other half of me really hopes he's for real. He showed so much promise all those years ago... It's still early, but how great would it be if both Iribarren and Nelson settled in right around .300 keeping all of the secondary stats in line with what they are currently doing? What seemed to be a pretty thin system at the top would suddenly be prospect laden again, even if this isn't Nelson's first go round at AAA.

SUNS SILENCE POWER OFFENSE

 

The Hagerstown Suns held the Power offense to a run on four hits on Tuesday night at Municipal Stadium and extended their winning streak to four games with a 7-1 victory to take the first game of the series.

 

Hagerstown plated a pair of runs with two outs in the first inning. After back-to-back two out hits from Bill Rhinehart and Aaron Seuss, Michael Burgess reached on Brent Brewer's error which allowed Rhinehart to score. (NOTE: The play was later changed to a base hit.) Sean Rooney reached on R.J. Seidel's error later in the inning which plated Seuss.

 

Jake Smolinski scored on former Brewer farmhand Francisco Plascencia's groundout in the second before Dan Lyons hit a solo home run to give the Suns a 4-0 lead. The Power scored their lone run on Jonathan Lucroy's opposite field solo home run in the top of the fourth inning.

 

The Suns added three insurance runs in the seventh to pull away. Rhinehart knocked in the first run on a groundout and Stephen Souza knocked in the next two on a single.

 

Colton Willems (2-2) allowed a run on three hits with four strikeouts over six innings and retired the last nine batters he faced to get the victory. Seidel (1-2) was tagged with the loss after allowing four runs, two earned on six hits with four strikeouts.

 

The Power fell to 9-16 with the loss and the Suns improved to 12-12 with the win. Lucroy had half of West Virginia's hits, going 2-for-4. The Suns pitching staff at one point retired 17 straight West Virginia batters. Reed Dickert made his Power debut with a perfect eighth inning.

 

The Power will continue their four game series with the Hagerstown Suns at Municipal Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. Right-hander Rob Bryson (0-1, 6.23) will get the start for the Power and the Suns will counter with right hander Brad Peacock (0-1, 6.87). The first pitch is scheduled for 1:05 PM (12:05 Central).

Nelson, Sounds Knock Off Sky Sox, 7-3

NASHVILLE - Brad Nelson's hot bat continued to sizzle on Tuesday night, knocking in four runs for the Sounds in a 7-3 victory over the Colorado Springs Sky Sox at Greer Stadium.

 

Nelson raised his season average to .346 with a pair of two-run singles in four at-bats and helped jump-start a Sounds offense that was shut out the previous night. It was only the Sounds' second win in 17 night games this season.

 

Colorado Springs plated the first run of the game in the first inning when Jon Herrera led off with a bunt single and then stole second before Cory Sullivan singled him in on the next pitch. Nashville starter Mark DiFelice escaped further damage by inducing a double play from Seth Smith and striking out Ian Stewart to end the inning.

 

Sky Sox starter Victor Zambrano followed DiFelice's rocky start by walking Hernan Iribarren, Laynce Nix, and Joe Dillon to start the bottom half of the inning. Nelson capitalized on Zambrano's control issues by continuing his hot streak with a two-run single, giving him a total of 12 RBIs in the last five games. Dillon scored the final run of the inning on the next at-bat when Vinny Rottino grounded into a double play.

 

Zambrano's control problems continued in the bottom of the third when he issued back-to-back walks to Nix and Dillon on eight straight pitches, and Rottino came through with a two-out triple that scored both runners. Not to be outdone by Nelson, Rottino is on a hot streak of his own, batting .302 with 12 RBIs in his last 10 games after getting off to a slow start this season.

The Sky Sox responded in the top of the fourth when Joe Koshansky belted a two-run homer to right field. It was his second home run in two days and his fifth on the year.

 

But Nelson struck again in the bottom of the fifth inning with another two-run single to extend the Sounds lead to four after Nix singled and Dillon doubled in front of him. With that hit, Nelson raised his average to .353 with runners in scoring position on the season.

 

Erasmo Ramirez pitched two scoreless innings in relief and handed the ball over to Luis Pena who kept the Sky Sox off the board in the ninth inning to end the game.

 

DiFelice (2-0) earned his second win in as many starts on the season after pitching six innings and giving up three runs on six hits while striking out five.

 

Zambrano (0-4) was handed the loss after giving up seven earned runs on six hits and seven walks while striking out seven over 5 2/3 innings. His erratic outing included 114 total pitches with only 57 of them for strikes and raised his ERA to 10.23 for the season.

 

Sounds shortstop Ozzie Chavez had a four-game hit streak snapped after a 0-for-4 night.

 

The teams will face a quick turnaround on Wednesday with an early start time of 10:30 a.m. for the third game of the series. Right-hander Dave Bush (NR), recently sent down from Milwaukee, will man the bump for the Sounds and face off against righty Josh Towers (2-1, 6.15) for the Sky Sox.

Sounds light up the night

It's first home win after the sun sets

The nightmare ended Tuesday for the Sounds.

 

Nashville claimed its first home night win of the season by beating Colorado Springs 7-3 at Greer Stadium.

 

Before Tuesday's game, the Sounds (6-18) were 1-15 in night games. Their only win under the lights had come last Saturday at Omaha.

 

A crowd of 2,208 watched Nashville also snap a losing streak against Colorado Springs (11-13) that had reached seven games and dated back to the 2006 season.

 

"We'll take any win right now, just to get anything started'' said Sounds first baseman Brad Nelson, whose two-run single in the first inning gave Nashville a 3-1 lead.

 

Nelson finished with two hits and four RBIs.

 

Nashville stretched the lead to 5-1 in the third after Zambrano (0-4) walked Laynce Nix and Joe Dillon. Vinny Rottino scored both runners with a triple to centerfield.

 

Nashville, which had scored just two runs in its previous two games, got into an offensive groove early in the game. Sky Sox right-hander Victor Zambrano walked the first three batters before Nelson's single to right field.

 

Sounds pitchers allowed only two hits over the last five innings.

 

Sounds right-hander Mark DiFelice (2-0) pitched six innings to pick up the win. He struck out five and allowed just four hits after giving up two in the first inning.

 

"We played better, we got a good start from DiFelice,'' Sounds Manager Frank Kremblas said. "He was patient in that first inning when he was a little bit wild and gave up a couple of hits which got them in scoring position."

 

What they said: "It has to start somewhere. We just have to play more games like we played tonight and we'll be OK.'' - Kremblas.

Sounds receive pitching help

The Sounds will get an infusion of Major League pitching talent this week with the additions of veteran right-handers Dave Bush and Jeff Weaver to the rotation.

 

Bush was optioned to Nashville by Milwaukee last Sunday. He will be activated to start today's 10:30 a.m. game against Colorado Springs.

The 28-year-old pitcher, who was 0-3 with a 6.75 ERA in four starts for the Brewers this season, led Milwaukee with 24 total wins over the previous two seasons. Bush went 12-10 in 2007.

 

Weaver, 31, signed a minor-league deal with the Brewers last week. He did not pitch in spring training this season. He will be activated to start Thursday's series finale against the Sky Sox.

 

Weaver went 7-13 with a 6.20 ERA in 27 starts last season with Seattle after spending the previous eight years with the Cardinals, Dodgers, Yankees and Tigers.

 

To make room for Bush and Weaver in the rotation, left-hander Zach Jackson, the team's opening day starter, was reassigned to the bullpen.

Rottino rolling: Sounds catcher Vinny Rottino hit a two-run triple in the third inning marking the 10th time in the last 11 games that he has hit safely. He has had an extra base hit in 8 of the last 11 games.

 

Better start: The Sounds had been outscored 41-20 in the first two innings heading into Tuesday's game. Nashville outscored Colorado Springs 3-1 after two innings Tuesday.

 

Whoa Nelly: Nashville's Brad Nelson, who gave the Sounds a 3-1 lead with a two-run single in the first inning, has hit safely in 17 of his 20 games this season.

 

Streak ends: Sounds shortstop Ozzie Chavez went 0-for-4 on Tuesday and ended his longest hitting streak of the season, which had reached four games.

 

Sky Sox ties: Mark DiFelice, Tuesday's winner, spent part of the 2001 season with Colorado Springs. He was 3-2 with a 5.28 ERA in eight starts.

 

Sky Sox catcher Humberto Cota spent parts of four seasons with Nashville from 2001-04. He batted .256 in 299 games for the Sounds.

 

Bowers is back: Colorado Springs added left-handed pitcher Cedrick Bowers to the roster Tuesday from extended spring training. Bowers was drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays in the fourth round of the 1996 draft and spent eight seasons with the organization. He has spent the last few years playing in Japan and Korea.
