Oswalt?

Oswalt may be dealt before this trade deadline. I think he could put us over the top.

What would it take to get him? He's signed for a while, so he would make a Sheets decision easy this coming Winter.

Would Weeks and Parra for Oswalt make us the favorite in the NL? Oswalt, Sheets, Gallardo, Suppan, and Villy looks to be one of the best rotations in the majors.

The Brewers could get Loretta back to platoon with Iribarren for the rest of this season. What does everybody think?

Yes, I would love to add Oswalt. I would imagine this would take at least three young players for the Astros to do it, and I know Oswalt has stated in the past that he likes it where he is, and that he'll likely retire when his current contract is up.

I imagine they'd do all they could to get Gallardo, but that the Brewers would say no, so you're at Parra, plus two. That team needs pitching depth, which makes me think the Brewers would target a different arm from a team that needs young bats more than young arms at the moment.

Contract details...

14M in 2009, 15M in 2010, 16M in 2011, complete no-trade clause, team option for 2012 at 16M, or he gets a 2M buyout, Oswalt has the right to opt out if the 2012 option is exercised.

Why would Houston trade Oswalt?

He is signed for a long time. And Houston seems to think they are going to compete every year. If they trade Oswalt (And thus lose him for the next few years), you are wasting prime years of Berkman, Tejada and Carlos Lee. If you trade Oswalt, you almost have to look to trade those players as well.

Oswalt is recently quoted as saying would approve a trade "Only if the club asked me too, which they haven't done yet."

It's been nothing but speculation, but it isn't going away. I think people just realize he's the most marketable player they've got, a proven winner like that is going to net a great return. They could probably get a good deal for Berkman too, but nobody's going to take on Carlos' horrible contract.

Frankly, if we could land Oswalt, the Astros could have their pick of any 3 players out of:

LaPorta (as a PTBNL, since can't be traded yet)

Gwynn

Iribarren

Escobar

Hardy

Gamel

Katin

Jeffress

Butler

Hammond

etc

Really, the guys currently on the 25 man roster are the only ones I'd demand we keep

No way the Astros are going to trade Oswalt, although the Brewers ought to think about trading away some of their prospects to acquire a high caliber player.

Well that certainly contradicts many of the reports right now.

It also doesn't have any reasoning behind it.

Considering the contract and what the Brewers would have to give up, I don't even think I'd want Oswalt. His K rate is in decline and he's not nearly as good as he was five years ago. He's still solid, but I'm not sure he's an "ace" anymore, and it's only reasonable to expect a decline to continue.

The contract for Oswalt is great. Its below market. 14, 15 and 16 with a 16 option or 2 buyout. Or you know, 1.5 million more that Suppan for the next two years.

Oswalt maybe in decline, but he's still a top 10 right now.

I know Oswalt's contract is not bad by itself, but considering you'd have to give up three top prospects I'm not sure I want him.

I don't think Oswalt's close to top 10 anymore. Just perusing through some stats, here are guys I'd prefer over Oswalt:

Webb

Haren

Santana

Peavy

Sabathia

Carmona

Verlander

Kazmir

Beckett

Lackey

Harang

Wang

Shields

Matsuzaka

McGowan

Even guys with injury issues like Bedard and Sheets have been better than Oswalt when they are healthy, and younger guys like Gallardo, Lincecum, etc. may pass him soon. Oswalt's more like top 25. He really had a pedestrian season last year.

The best part of the Oswalt trade rumors is the proposed deals by Yankees fans. Listening to the call-ins on Mike and the Mad Dog the other day was hilarious -- "Why wouldn't the Astros take Melky Cabrera, Jose Tabata, and a pitcher? They'd be CRAZY to turn that down!"

I'm not saying Oswalt isn't good, I was just saying that his numbers have been slightly declining for a couple years (he is off to a poor start this year as well) and I don't trust him with that small frame to not decline even more over the next few years. I don't think I'd give up Laporta for him.

If the pitcher's a good pitcher, that's not a bad deal at all.

If the pitcher is a Oldenhorf, Horne, Brackman, that'd be a very good deal for the Astros. I don't know that they'd get a deal that good from many other teams.

Tabata is a top 100 prospect, Melky's a very good young player who's 23 years old. Throw in one of those pitchers with very good stuff, and I don't know what more people think that Oswalt is going to net Houston.

endaround[/b]]Cabrera has a career OPS of 738. Not seeing very good there. Tabata is 4-5 years away.

But he also plays CF and figures to improve with age. He was rushed through the minors for some reason. His defense is good, and his arm is phenomenal. He's a pretty valuable player/trading chip. Why a guy like Ellsbury is rated so much higher is beyond me.
