Narron Flirts With Perfection in Stars' Win

Sam Narron retired the first 23 batters he faced en route to a complete-game two-hitter in Huntsville's 9-1 victory over Mississippi Wednesday morning and afternoon in the last of a five-game set at Trustmark Park. The Stars improved to 12-8 on the season after taking three of five in the series, while the Braves' second two-game win streak came to an end, as they fell to 4-16. Huntsville has outscored the Braves 65-29 in grabbing eight of the ten meetings this season.

 

Narron breezed through seven innings, recording 11 ground ball outs and retiring nine hitters with two pitches or less. He struck out Kala Ka'aihue to begin the eighth and then set down Greg Creek on a bouncing ball to first for the second out. Diory Hernandez bunted the first pitch he saw foul up the third base line and was greeted by an irritated catcher Carlos Corporan on his return to the batter's box. The Mississippi second sacker then smashed a ground ball past Mat Gamel at third, down the left field line and into the corner for a triple to ruin Narron's bid for perfection. Narron walked Mark Jurich before retiring J.C. Boscan on a liner to center field to end the frame.

 

Matt Young walked with one out in the ninth, moved to third base on a double by Javier Guzman and scored on a Jason Perry sacrifice fly to spoil the shutout bid. Narron walked two, fanned five and chipped in with two hits in his second nine inning complete game with the Stars to improve to 3-1.

 

The visitors jumped on Dustin Evans for four runs in the first inning on five hits. Gamel, Matt LaPorta and Chris Errecart delivered consecutive run-scoring doubles to make it 3-0. Freddy Parejo singled with two outs to score Errecart to complete the rally. The Stars scored seven times in the first inning off of Evans in his two starts against them. Parejo finished with three hits and is has collected 20 hits in 41 at-bats.

 

Ryan Crew doubled with one out in the fourth and scored when Narron followed with a double down the left field line to collect his first hit and first run batted in of the season. Michael Brantley doubled home two runs with two outs in the sixth and then scored when Alcides Escobar followed with a single to make it 8-0 and chase Evans from the game. The right-hander suffered his fourth loss in as many turns after allowing 10 hits, walking two and fanning three.

 

The Stars return home Thursday night to begin a five-game set against Jacksonville with southpaw Steve Hammond making the start against Suns' right-hander James McDonald. Sam Narron will be 27 in July, he should be seeing Nashville at some point -- and yes, staffs are crowded everywhere in the system, it seems; a 1.159 OPS after 41 AB's for Freddy Parejo -- flukish or not, that's impressive...

Narron nearly perfect against Braves

Sam Narron may not have attained perfection against the Mississippi Braves on Wednesday afternoon, but he sure came close.

The 6-foot-7 southpaw retired the first 23 batters he faced en route to a two-hit complete-game victory as his Huntsville Stars rolled to a 9-1 win.

"I'd never taken a no-hitter that deep into the game before," said Narron. "As the game went on, everybody was just trying to keep the same routines. I had the same guy giving me a high five after every inning, and then went to sit on the same spot on the bench."

Narron (3-1) had his bid for a perfect game ruined with two outs in the eighth inning, when Diory Hernandez tripled down the left-field line. Prior to connecting on his triple, Hernandez courted controversy by attempting to break up the no-hit bid with a bunt.

"When you get that deep with a no-hitter, you want to lose it with a legit hit. Especially when your team has a 9-0 lead," said Narron. "I guess [Hernandez] wanted to start a rally, and that's how he decided to go about it."

Although Narron's bid for Southern League immortality ended in the eighth inning, the 26-year-old stayed in the contest and was able to record the third complete game of his minor league career. Narron was touched for a run in the frame, however, as Matt Young drew a one-out walk, advanced to third on Javier Guzman's double, and scored on Jason Perry's sacrifice fly.

"If I had wanted to preserve the shutout, I shouldn't have walked that guy," said Narron. "But, overall, I felt really good today. I was throwing the ball where I wanted to, and preserving my pitch count by getting the ball in play and then relying on my defense."

Narron even helped his own cause by chipping in with the bat, as he collected two of the Stars' 13 hits and also drove in a run. Freddy Parejo led the charge by going 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored, and an RBI, while Alcides Escobar collected three singles and drove in two runs.

Dustin Evans (0-4) started for Mississippi and suffered his fourth loss in as many starts, yielding eight runs on 10 hits over 5 2/3 innings. Nelson Payano yielded a run on three hits over 2 1/3 innings before Michael Nix tossed a 1-2-3 ninth.

Wow, the Power are having a helluva game, 10 runs on 19 hits through 7 innings. Jonathan Lucroy is 4-4 with a walk, tallying 3 runs, 4 RBI & 2 doubles. Lee Haydel also has four hits, and Caleb Gindl & Zelous Wheeler have three apiece.

Speaking of Gamel, Alcides Escobar has more RBIs than he does? I wouldn't have bet on that one before the season.. but I liked how he drove the ball in spring.

POWER OFFENSE EXPLODES

 

The first six batters in the West Virginia Power starting lineup had multi-hit games as the Power offense scored 12 runs on a season high 22 hits to win their third game in a row, defeating the Lexington Legends 12-2 at Applebee's Park.

 

The scoring started in the second when Zelous Wheeler hit his first of two doubles and scored later in the inning on Kurt Crowell's groundout. Jonathan Lucroy's second of four hits brought in the first of three runs in the top of the third as his base hit scored Lee Haydel before Lucroy and Caleb Gindl touched home plate on Wheeler's second double of the night. The Power scored all three of their runs in the fourth inning with two outs. Lucroy's double plated the first run before Gindl and Curt Rindal ripped back-to-back RBI singles.

 

Lucroy scored for a third time in the top of the sixth inning on a wild pitch before he doubled again in the seventh inning to bring in Haydel and David Fonseca. The Power plated their final two runs in the eighth inning on Steffan Wilson's second home run of the season. Lexington scored twice in the bottom of the ninth on Jonathan Fixler's two-out double.

 

R.J. Seidel (1-1) limited Lexington to just four hits over five scoreless innings of work and stuck out four to get the victory. Colt Adams (1-2) was tagged with the loss after surrendering seven runs on 13 hits over three and two thirds. Mike Ramlow pitched three perfect innings in relief.

 

The Power improved to 7-13 with the win and the Legends fell to 6-14 with the loss. Lucroy went 4-for-4 with three runs and four RBI, giving him two four-hit games this season. Caleb Gindl and Lee Haydel both hit safely four times as well, establishing single-game bests for them this season. West Virginia is 4-1 since their seven-game losing streak and they have outscored their opponents 49-19 during that stretch.

The Power will begin a four game series with the Delmarva Shorebirds at Appalachian Power Park on Thursday night. Right hander Amaury Rivas (1-0, 1.56) will get the start for the Power and the Shorebirds will counter with left hander Tony Butler (0-0, 3.71). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM (6:05 Central).
