There is a GREAT suburb called Monroeville. I stay there everytime I go to Pitt. It's about 15 minutes outside of the city, and there also is a great mall there too. The people are friendly, and if you ask, they will give you tips on great places to eat and stay. Although it's been about 9 years since I've been there, I stayed at a nice motel called the William Penn Motel. It was a nice Mom and Pop type place and the owners were very helpful. Enjoy your stay, Pittsburgh is one of the coolest cities in the USA.

If you're staying in Pittsburgh, make sure to hit up the Strip District for food/drinks/entertainment. Also, you would be remiss if you did not stop at Primanti Brothers for one of their classic sandwiches. You can pretty much get any type of filling in the sandwich but the clincher is the cole slaw and fries they pile on. I've only been there once and didn't have too much time to explore the city, but the brief glimpse I had was enjoyable. Additionally, PNC is one great stadium to catch a game at. It's at the top of my list for stadiums I've visited. The Racing Pierogies are enjoyable but pale in comparision to our Racing Sausages.

I'm headed there for the series at the end of August. Anyone have suggestions for what to do before and/or after the game around the stadium? Also, I couldn't find anything on the website about parking. Well, they had stuff, but it was pretty vague and basically just said, "Find a garage." Anyone know anything about the parking situation around the park and where the best spot is? I've heard walking over the Clemente bridge is a must...any truth to that?

If I had Braun's pee in my fridge I'd tell everybody.

I went to PNC Park about seven years ago just after my senior year of high school, and I whole-heartedly agree with BoneDaddy about Monroeville. My brother and I drove down there and we didn't even reserve a hotel, we just went down there with just two tickets and since we were on our way to Virginia for a wedding, we were only staying for a night.

Monroeville is a decent town and we were able to easily get a hotel in the city. It is right off of an I-76 bypass called 376. It is easily accessible to Pittsburgh, we were able to get to the park within 15 minutes from our hotel, the Holiday Inn.

As for restaurants, I don't really have any tips on that, we spent maybe 18 hours at most in Pittsburgh just to see the game and have a place to crash before heading to Virginia the next day. But there is tons to do around the stadium and a lot of pickings as far as restaurants. The people were nice where we parked our car.

What is really cool about PNC is ALL the seats are contoured directly to home plate and the sightlines overlooking the Allegheny River makes it such an immaculate game experience. The stadium is kind of unique and cozy and isn't as big as most stadiums are. I would highly recommend PNC to anyone. If I had the time, I would scan some of the pics I took of PNC from the trip, but maybe I will post them on Tuesday when I will be more free. PNC is by the far the best stadium I have been to when I factored in the friendliness, sightlines, accessibility to restaurants and customer service.

I believe there is no better view from a field of a city than at DUSK at PNC.

Not as cool as the one above, but I thought it was kind of a cool view from across the river. I can't really help with restaurants cause I was only there for a day, but I'll agree with those who said the people are really friendly. The people outside the stadium, those who worked there, and most of the friends were all extrememly nice. I've only been to 6 ballparks but this has by far been my favorite so far.

that first statue picture is not Rogers Hornsby but Honus Wagner.

 

edit: okay, either I was drunk on 4/30/08 or I don't know amything about baseball (or maybe the photo was changed) but it is definitely Wagner.

Had to give this a bump. I'm heading to Pittburgh at the end of this month, (got tickets for the Saturday and Sunday games). I really hope my girlfriend doesn't check this site, but anyways...

 

Friday night is hopefully going to be the "special" night. I even plan on hiding a sign away so that when we go to the game on Saturday night we can hold up a sign that says "Hey Mom and Dad, we're engaged!"...assuming she says yes. So my question is...where can I take her? I've heard there are some really cool places to see the rivers branching out or something like that. I don't want to do it over some fancy dinner or something. I would rather it be on a walk in a fairly romantic place, preferably with other people around (they're part of the plan to make sure I record it). Any suggestions?

Point State Park is right by PNC. I don't know if I can vouch for the romantic quotient (or RQ, I guess), but I think it's an attractive place, and one that is probably rarely empty of other people.

This website describes a renovation of the park which appears to be underway - which could be a dealbreaker.

 

What might be cooler yet if is you proposed on one of the inclines:

 

Duquesne Incline

Monongahela Incline

 

These are little cable cars that transport people up and down sides of the hill. The view from the cars is pretty neat and the hours are mass-transit type (so you have lots of chances to go up and down). How many others are on the car at a given time of day varies.

I'd call the view romantic.

Remember: the Brewers never panic like you do.
