Earthquake

Anyone feel it? I'm at work in Milwaukee and I could feel the building shake.

An earthquake measuring magnitude 5.4 with an epicenter in Southeastern Illinois rattled the Tri-State in the early morning hours Friday.

The shaking, which started at about 4:35 a.m. CDT, lasted about 10 seconds.

A reporter at the Associated Press building in downtown Indianapolis reported feeling the earthquake as well. Scott Rosenburgh, a former Courier & Press advertising manager now working in a suburb northwest of Chicago, said the quake woke him there.

No damage has been reported to police dispatch yet. More information will be posted as it becomes available.

Wow, yes I felt it. I woke up this morning a little after 4:30 and thought it was odd that the bed seemed to be moving even though I wasn't- I thought I was just dreaming.

i didn't feel a thing, but we lived in west salem, il for six years, and that is where the center was, that is a small town made up of farmers...i can't imagine an earthquake there...

Yeah, I woke up, heard some kind of tapping sound. I thought maybe a squirrel or raccoon was on the roof of our house.

I'm in Champaign, Illinois and felt it for sure. The epicenter was about an hour away from us. We live on the 3rd floor of an apartment building and we were swaying pretty good. It didn't even dawn on me that it could've been an earthquake at the time though.

I'm in Chicago and it woke me up. I went back to sleep and then when I got up this morning I thought I had dreamt the whole thing.

I am sure many are aware of this, but there is actually a better chance of an 8.0 (which would be absolutley catastrophic) happening in the midwest than in California. The New Madrid fault, which is not too far from this epicenter, is a very scary thing.

I'm sitting in downtown Madison and I definitely felt an aftershock. Lasted a few minutes and was a fairly constant light vibration. Because I slept through the initial quake and then didn't catch the news, I thought I was going crazy.

Same here. Room vibrating for about 15 seconds. Didn't know aftershocks could come 6+ hours later.

I felt it too...it was at about 10:15, and lasted for what seemed a minute.

 

Update: According to the USGS, there was a 4.6 quake at 10:14 at about the same place as the one earlier. I'm sort of surprised to have felt it here...

I just read story that said there have been up to 6 aftershocks since 9AM, but only one was likely to be felt by humans. That would probably be the one you guys felt.

 

I haven't felt a thing from any of them.

I fell asleep on my couch in the basement last night that's were my HD TV is located. I had my laptop on the coffee table and had the table right up against the couch so I could eat a late night meal.

 

I was kind of freaked out at first but then thought it was just the laptop so I moved the table away but the couch still shook so I moved it farther and it worked I thought maybe my laptop was vibrating somehow and that was making my couch shake since it was right next to me. To bad I wasn't sleeping the other way on the couch I could have seen all my bobbleheads shake.

I'm pretty fascinated by how far those vibrations traveled with all that flat land in the Midwest. We had a 5.4 with an epicenter about 40 miles south of here in San Francisco last Fall but only some parts of the Bay Area felt it and nothing past Modesto or Carmel because of all the hills and mountains. This one was smaller and people were feeling it hundreds of miles away.

I didn't feel either one. The only time I've felt an Earthquake was when I was in a hotel room in Vancouver, BC a few years ago. There was an Earthquake outside Seatle and I felt in in Vancouver. Defintely a strange experience. Didn't realize was it was at first. Then I turned on the TV and saw all about it.

I didn't feel a thing. Maybe I didn't notice? I was up too. Kinda feel left out. I felt one that happened like 2 or so years ago which wasn't as big though. Weird how that works.

We experienced one in northwestern Arizona about 7-8 years ago, also during the night/early morning. One of the freakiest things I've ever experienced, and it made me glad I don't live in California.

This article talks about the questions seriesfinale brings up, and again stresses the possible severity of an earthquake along the New Madrid fault.

I hate the thought of earthquakes (and we were out of state, so we missed the Friday action)...but zachlaka, that is a very entertaining statement.

I woke up due to a 3.7 in Tennessee when I was there about a year and a half ago. I thought the rumbling was due to the room next door (I was in a hotel). Woke up, looked it up on the internet, and yep, it was an earthquake.

I felt the first quake as the bed was shaking pretty hard. at first , I thought it was just the wind or my wife trying to wake me up or the cat.. my wife felt one of the after shocks around 11;30. We live near Beardstown, ILL. We will be moving to Marion/Carbondale in june. i was talking to my real estate agent, and she definitely felt it in Marion, IL.
