It actually worked very well. Boston had a great offense.

They did? Oh I think they took third in the East and didnt make the playoffs.

Look Im SICK of arguing about Gwynn and Gross. Im done with it. You guys that like Gross fine, I do to but I prefer Gwynn and think he could be a good lead-off guy for us. Im done now.

While we always seem to remember when he does it, Estrada has only swung at the first pitch 30 times out of 124 AB's this year. That does NOT mean he takes a lot of pitches as he has yet to have a 3-0 count or a 3-1 count and only 2 full counts. So while he swings early in the atbat, it's only been the first pitch 30 times out of 124.

Gross is not that fast. And if you want someone like Kevin Youkilis hitting lead-off for your team. Then thats your choice. How did that work for Boston last season?

He scored 1 run every 6.22 PA as a leadoff hitter. Reyes scored 1 every 5.75 with a better lineup. Pierre was one per 8.45 PA. Youkilis was a very strong leadoff hitter last year. You don't need speed to lead off.

Okay great. I see your point and you can keep throwing your stats at me. Im done with this debate. I like Gwynn, sorry.

Alright, way to work out of it, Bennie.

Hate to see Sheets leading off the next inning but he's not coming out of this game. If he pitches a perfect 7th, I wouldn't be shocked to see him be brought back out for the 8th rather than turning it over to Turnbow. That could potentially be a very tough call -- and a very second guessed one.

Ha. Id rather have Weeks stay there then Gross. Gross is a middle of the order type hitter.

I guess now I'm confused what you want in a leadoff hitter? Gross gets on base at a very good clip and if you want speed, he's definitely fast enough. He could be a Youkilis-type leadoff hitter, which worked well for Boston last year.

From that point of view, Granderson worked as a lead-off hitter for the Tigers last year, and Weeks is similar to him. And the Tigers went further than the Red Sox, so that must be better.

My problem is that when I lobby for TGJ people speak in absolutes about the future.

He can't do it.

How do you know that?

He's a fluke.

We can't know that yet.

It's a small sample.

But it will stay a small sample if he doesn't get a chance.

Why do you hate Gross?

I don't hate Gross. I just think we could give Gwynn a shot.

Why do you hate Weeks?

I don't. I like Rickie. But he can hit 6 or 7 till he gets some confidence.

You think Gwynn will work out in the lineup?

I don't know, but I can't know until he gets a chance.

Granderson is pretty sweet, too.

Leyland knows K's don't matter with a leadoff hitter. And he's "old school". Granderson had 174 K's last year. He's already got 37 this year. And he's got a .920 OPS. I will say without a doubt that Gwynn will not be as good as Curtis Granderson.
