AWA wrestling on ESPN Classic

gypcasino

Anyone see this? It appears to be on several times a week. I watched it last night and it was a real blast from the past. It came on and I told my rooommate "I bet Larry Zbyszko is going to be in the first match." Sure enough, he was. The big main event featured the Midnight Rockers.

I was just talking about the AWA on another board the other day. While I haven't followed wrestling for well over 15 years now, I was a huge fan of the AWA as a kid. We'd go to the Auditorium every Saturday night they had a card.
"His whole life is a fantasy camp. People should plunk down $2000 to live like him for a week. Sleep, do nothing, fall ass-backwards into money, mooch food off your neighbors and have sex without dating... THAT'S a fantasy camp."

I have DVRed every episode and watched them with much enjoyment. Anything with Larry Nelson is priceless to me. The other day they had a sit down interview with Larry Nelson and Larry Zbyszko and they were discussing Ninjas. It was television at its best! I know several old AWA wrestlers and they told me how Larry Nelson was so wasted every day. He is one of my all time favorites and it's great to relive those old AWA days.

Col. DeBeers was on last night's episode. I love how they billed him from South Africa except he talks with a slight southern U.S. accent. I looked him up on the Wikipedia and his last name is Wiskoski and he's from Missouri.http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/laugh.gif

Hey brewcrewreview, when do they air? I checked ESPN for listings but didn't see anything. I know I could check from day-to-day, but I'm sure you may have the answer if you're DVR'ing them.

I've been DVRing these and watching them when I can. I really enjoy these shows, even though I'm just a little bit too young to have seen the AWA...our family didn't get cable until around 1992, a couple years after the AWA folded.

My favorite thing so far has been Larry Zbyszko begging on camera for a title match against Nick Bockwinkle and claiming he'll "beat 15 orangutans with my arm tied behind my back to get a title shot." Oh yeah, and pretty much anything with either Stan Hansen or Bruiser "King Kong" Brody is gold.

I stopped thinking pro wrestling was interesting around the age of 11-12, but as a little kid, i loved AWA big time. I still remember crying sometimes when i had to go to church while wrestling wasn't over yet. My favorite experience was seeing Andre the Giant live and him walking right past me, being stunned at how big he was. That same night Jesse Ventura slapped my hand as he went by, it's amazing in retrospect how something that minor could seem so cool back them.

Just my luck Time Warner recently replaced ESPN Classic with the Golf Channel.

My dad has a client who is a former AWA wrestler. His stage name was Peter Lee. If you remember him, you are a wrestling junkie. He was the sacrificial lamb on the TV matches. My dad recently spent a Sunday afternoon watching old AWA shows on Peter Lee's hard drive and swapping stories. He says Greg Gagne is a used car salesman in the Twin Cities.
