I know it's early, but Brewer continues to put up horrific SO numbers. Everyday I look at the box score hoping to see a 0... after a year and 16 ABs, I'm beginning to think it might be a fruitless endeavor on my part. I've been firmly on his bandwagon for a long time, but if he doesn't improve, I'm not sure how they can promote him for promotion's sake. Though I guess far less talented players have continued to move up with similar results.

Sounds Fall Again To RedHawks, 7-5

 

OKLAHOMA CITY - The Nashville Sounds suffered another loss on Tuesday evening at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark, falling 7-5 to the host Oklahoma RedHawks.

 

For the second straight night, the Sounds (1-5) jumped out to a lead in the top of the first inning. Hernan Iribarren (3-for-3) led off the contest with a single to extend his hitting streak to five games before coming around to score on Laynce Nix's two-run homer to right off Oklahoma starter Eric Hurley, the outfielder's first longball of the season.

The RedHawks stormed back with a five-run outburst against Sounds starter Zach Jackson in the bottom of the frame. The left-hander got off to a wild start, walking the first three batters he faced, before Oklahoma first baseman Nate Gold cleared the bases with a three-run triple to center that gave the home club a 3-2 lead. Gold scored on a Kevin Mench groundout before the 'Hawks added their final tally of the inning on a two-out Kevin Richardson RBI single.

 

Oklahoma added another run against Jackson in unearned fashion in the second following an Ozzie Chavez throwing error, the shortstop's second gaff in two nights - both of which led to unearned RedHawks runs.

 

Nashville got a pair of runs back in the top of the fourth against Hurley. Chavez pulled the Sounds within 6-3 when his RBI triple plated Abraham Nunez, who opened the frame with a single. One batter later, Chavez scored to make it a 6-4 contest when he scored on a close play at the plate on an Iribarren sacrifice fly that gave the outfielder his first RBI of the year.

 

The RedHawks got a run back in the bottom of the frame to increase the lead to 7-4 when former Sound Nelson Cruz delivered a sacrifice fly to center that brought in Casey Benjamin.

 

The Sounds missed a chance for a rally in the seventh when Brad Nelson and Russell Branyan opened the frame with singles against RedHawks reliever Elizardo Ramirez. The right-hander later worked out of a bases-loaded jam unscathed by retiring Chavez on an inning-ending flyout to left.

 

Nashville brought the score to its final 7-5 in the eighth when Iribarren singled, his third hit of the evening, then stole second and later scored on a Wes Littleton wild pitch.

 

Despite coming up on the short end of the final score, the Sounds out-hit the RedHawks on the evening, 13-8, and each member of the Nashville lineup recorded at least one knock.

 

Ramirez (1-1) picked up the win after working 2 2/3 scoreless innings of relief behind Hurley. Frank Francisco tossed a scoreless ninth to notch his first save of the year.

 

Jackson (0-2) allowed seven runs (six earned) on seven hits while walking four batters and fanning only one in his five-plus frames of action. His ERA sits at 8.18 after two starts.

 

Right-hander Yovani Gallardo (0-0, 6.75) makes his second rehab start for the Sounds when the teams continue the series with an 11:05 a.m. matinee on Wednesday. The RedHawks will counter with left-hander A.J. Murray (0-0, 0.00).

POWER FALL IN BACK-AND-FORTH BATTLE WITH AUGUSTA

 

In a game that included four lead changes on Tuesday night at Appalachian Power Park, the Augusta GreenJackets used a two-run homer from Thomas Neal in the top of the seventh inning to pull away in a 6-4 victory over the West Virginia Power to even up the series.

 

Augusta scored first in the top of the first on Garrett Baker's RBI double. The Power answered in the bottom of the inning on Jonathan Lucroy's two-out RBI single. West Virginia took their first lead of the game in the second inning on Zelous Wheeler's run-scoring single. Augusta stole the lead in the fourth on Angel Villalona's RBI double and Villalona scored later in the inning on a James Simmons single.

 

The Power responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning to regain the lead on back-to-back RBI singles from Kurt Crowell and Scott Houin. Their one-run lead was taken away on Neal's two-run blast in the seventh inning, his second of the series. Augusta added one more run on Brock Bond's RBI base hit in the ninth.

 

Joe Patterson (2-0) allowed just a hit and struck out three through two and a third scoreless innings to get the win. Pedro Lambertus (0-1) was tagged with the loss after surrendering a pair of runs on three hits over two innings and Daniel Turpen (2) tossed a pair of scoreless innings to get the save.

 

The Power will continue their four game series with Augusta Wednesday morning. Right hander Roque Mercedes (0-0, 8.10) will get the start for the Power and the GreenJackets will counter with left hander Steve Calicutt (0-0, 0.00). The first pitch is scheduled for 10:35 AM (9:35 Central).

Nashville's Nic Ungs, who pitched well for the Sounds Sunday (Hometown Paper):

 

Nic Ungs turned in a near-flawless performance in his debut with the Nashville Sounds on Sunday afternoon.

Ungs pitched five shutout innings and earned the decision in the Sounds' 4-0 victory at New Orleans. The right-hander from Dyersville, Iowa, scattered three hits and struck out four in helping Nashville pick up its first win of the season in four Triple-A Pacific Coast League outings.

"My timing was a little off in the first couple of innings, but I was able to settle in after that, and I started throwing all four pitches for strikes, which is huge for the first start of the season," Ungs, who signed a free agent contract with the Milwaukee Brewers affiliate in January, said Monday.

"There's a big difference between spring training outings and the regular season. In spring training, hitters are going up there, trying to make something happen every at-bat. They're trying to hit one out or build up their stats. But, when the regular season starts, you see a lot more situational hitting, which forces you to make more quality pitches."

Ungs continued a recent string of success against the Zephyrs. Including last season with Albuquerque, he has thrown 16 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings against New Orleans, a New York Mets affiliate.

The Sounds also avoided a season-opening sweep.

"We've actually been playing pretty good baseball, but we've been hitting the ball right at guys and not getting the breaks," Ungs said. "Basically, I just wanted to go out and give my team a chance to win. You can't control the breaks, just like you can't control wins and losses. You just have to go out and do what you do best and try to give your team a chance."

Augusta knocks off Power 6-4

Thomas Neal hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning to give Augusta the lead and eventually the win as the GreenJackets defeated the Power 6-4 Tuesday night at Appalachian Power Park in front of a crowd of 3,254.

Leading 4-3, Augusta's Nick Noonan reached base on an error by shortstop Brent Brewer. Afterward, Neal crushed the ball over the left field wall against reliever Pedro Lambertus, giving Augusta a 5-4 lead. It was Neal's second homer in two games.

"Errors are a part of the game and we try to tell the pitchers to pick up the rest of the team sometimes," said Power pitching coach John Curtis. "Brewer is a great shortstop and one got away from him."

Neal's hit was one of the 13 on the night by Augusta (2-4). The Power managed 10 hits.

"The pitching was a little shaky tonight in all honesty," Curtis said. "But it was Pedro's first game this year."

In the seventh and eighth innings, the Power got two runners aboard. But Caleb Gindl struck out in the seventh and a sacrifice bunt by Zelous Wheeler failed as Augusta turned a double play.

Then in the ninth, Augusta's Daniel Turpen retired three straight batters. The Power (2-4) stranded six runners and Augusta nine.

"We had a chance to win," Curtis said. "The double play [on Wheeler's bunt attempt] with a man on first and third was big. But the bullpen for them did a great job, so you've got to tip your hat once in a while."

The Power struggled hitting again as it was held scoreless over the final five innings. Wheeler ended a 17-inning scoreless streak Monday with a homer.

John Alonso, who came into the game tied for the league lead in home runs with two and ranked second in RBIs with four, had another strong game for West Virginia as he went 2-for-4 with two doubles. Jonathan Lucroy, Kurt Crowell, Scott Houin and Wheeler also contributed with RBIs.

"We are going to lose some," Curtis said. "We had a chance to win and that is all we ask. We had a chance to win and we couldn't get it done. Tomorrow is another day."

The same two teams play at 10:35 AM today (9:35 Central) in the first of four Grand Slam kids days at the App.
