5/31/07 Marlins (Obermueller) @ Brewers (Vargas): 7:05 PM CT

I like the lineup someone else posted, although perhaps Ned is going to continue experimenting with Hart at the top of the lineup. I could see

Hart

Hardy

Braun

Fielder

Hall

Jenkins

Weeks

Estrada

or even Weeks and Braun flip-flopped. I'm sure Estrada will hit 5th or 6th, but I would be intrigued by this lineup

Yea, if I recall correctly, there was one game in Washington where Wes took either a no-hitter or a one hitter into the ninth and somehow we lost that game. I think it ended 1-0.

Man, those were the days...

Wes took a no-no into the 7th, I believe. I was listening to the game, thinking to myself that if he finished 'pitching really well' that I'd have to get an Obermueller jersey. Not a tee, a jersey, because who knows how long it would be before there's a Brewers no-hitter again?

But then someone got a hit and that saved me some coin.

And it was against the Nats. Wes' lone win to date this year also came vs. Washington.

I'm pretty sure Obermueller took a perfecto into like the sixth inning that game against the Nats. That was what, like three or four years ago?

I also support keeping Hart in the leadoff spot for the time being and seeing how that goes.

Obie also had that nice late-season (2004, I assume) outing vs. Houston on national TV.

He tended to do well when we were in attendance. Of course, I'm not hoping for that tonight.

The last time Obermueller and Vargas faced off was when Obie was with the Crew and Vargas was with the Nats.

Vargas went 1.1 innings giving up 6 ER's 2 BB's and 1 K

Meanwhile Obermueller went 8 innings giving up 2 hits, 0 walks and 4 K's.

This was the game where Obie had a perfect game with one out in the 7th until Jamey Carroll broke it up.

I was actually at that game which was a no no into the 7th. My old college roommate and I just kept looking at each other between innings in a state of shock. Almost as crazy as the Moeller cycle incident. Those were the days.

That's funny. I posted the link to that game's box score above but didn't even notice that Vargas pitched in it.

so it wouldn't be fair to lump him in with guys like Wayne Franklin or all those other horrible, ex-Brewer starting pitchers.

I still can't believe the Brewers got Villanueva for Franklin.

Does Obie = Bush? Great moments...big innings?

I think overall Bush is a better pitcher with more potential. But yes in some way he kind of does.

I know its so crazy, sometimes I wonder with all the great moves Melvin has made if that was his best and with the biggest "rip-off" value.

We need to make Wes throw strikes.

I like the irony of that statement - the Brewers tried getting him to do that while he was actually on the team, and his inability to do it on most nights was what got him shipped out of town.

Obermueller has always had enough stuff to be a solid major league pitcher.

His problem has always been that he tends more often than not to struggle with his command. Then he'll start issuing some walks, then eventually he'll get behind in the count and groove one.

Though he's had those games that have been pointed out where he's pounding the zone and getting ahead of hitters. When he does that, he's tough.

His last few starts, he's struggled. I've got to believe this game has special meaning for him so he will be either too jacked up and be all over the place, or really locked in and very tough.

He also needs a decent game to keep his rotation spot and possibly a job (pretty much the story of his career). So that may be weighing on him too.
